It's still way early, but we are hearing rumors of an idea being floated for next season that would ditch the current format, and be much more akin to what you currently get at the Monster Energy Cup.

Qualifying happens during the day.
Multiple mains for each class.
Doing away with heats and semis.

That means...

Seeing more of the top riders on the track and in action.
More racing that matters.
Fewer issues with lapped riders.
More time on the edge of your seat.

Is this a for sure thing? No. But it sure is interesting.
I liked the Daytona 500 being 3 stages. How about a sx main being 2 x 5 laps and a 10 lap sprint to the finish. Re racking them in stagger start each time on the start straight do by the 3rd stage the Greame has risen to the top and you have a 10 lap battle with the big guns starting at the front.

How about no qualifying and 3 one hour mains with only Seely riding by himself? Bear related animations between the mains and all the races are held in Toronto. What do you think?
You're a genius. Hey Feld! Hire this guy!

I don't like it, it's more like going the way of MXGP where you'll have to have one of those spots, as a team. I bet they would do away with qualifying altogether and we'd have the same guys, and only the same guys, at the races. Nobody else could get a chance to learn and get better to eventually make the show, like what Peick did a few years ago. Bad juju on that idea.

Sounds like it might work for say the last 2 rounds to make more points available.
I do like the qualifying, heats, semi's, and lcq also. Some of the best racing is in the lcq. Getting extra main events is the trade off.
Getting hurt say during qualifying, could make you lose a lot of points. Fastest one lap speed. gets you to the main, or the mobile medical unit.

If it goes that way the privateers won't get much of a chance because they won't have 40 making the night show so somewhere about 20 or 22 riders make the night show. If that is done the fill in riders won't have much seat time before they get the phone call to fill in for injured racers.
they could have a "B" main for the guys that didnt make the "A" mains.. gives the privateers exposure and also as a filler race to break up the other races

I love the MEC, but not sure I would like a whole series of it. I've been watching SX since the Oly Superbowl of Motocross at the LA Coliseum, the series has seen changes, so that's nothing new, but I just don't trust Feld to do the right thing.

For me, the 450 main is what its all about, the rest including regional 250 races are interesting but its not edge of seat stuff. So I like this idea. The other thing I would like would be a short series at the end where its the best of the best 250 riders, not just 1 race in Vegas...

2 x 20 minute mains for the 450's and 2 x 15 minute mains for the 250s would be awesome.

Can someone please help me with the maths? Is that more racing than what we currently get? It is definitely more meaningful racing so regardless, I think its better.

I really enjoy watching the heats. It's cool to see a kid who may only ride in his region attempt to qualify and sometimes actual succeed!

There's just something about the "everything is on the line" idea of heats and LCQ's.

Just watching three mains for 450's and 3 for 250's wouldn't be as interesting to me.

Could that not be part of the pre show?

If the three mains are 20 laps / minutes each then itmight be better than it is now, but the problem isn't the format the problem is the bikes and tracks. That is why it's not as good as it could be. It's because the tracks suck and the bikes are too big for indoors.

They should just do one long main with segments where you have a mandatory yellow flag and pit stop as well as pay points based on running order at the end of each segment. Also anytime a rider gets to far ahead throw a competition yellow and let the field catch up.

Well obviously kidding as NASCAR is getting desperate to but a MEC type format would be good.

Love the current format. Perhaps make the tracks a little better with berms and more of those quads only a couple guys can do

Edit: meant to be a post. Not a reply

2 mains for the top 20 guys
2 mains for 21-40 guys
All qualifying races should issue points of some sort to make them all more meaningful.

The races you see on TV should be points paying of some sort (multiple mains / Head to Head / Fast Lap / etc) to give it more meaning and purpose. Simple as that. Having the Race Day Live show qualifying races instead of qualifying laps would be better too for the web audience.

Noticed I said "Fast Lap". Why not have the top 5 or 10 qualified riders do a fastest lap time session or competition? A small short mini event in the night program that pays small points similar to a Head 2 Head races in AX. I would think that would be more edge of the seat viewing for the crowd as pressure is put on 1 lap vs 10, 15, 20, etc. Good for the short attention span audience of the dirt bike world!

Would these change ideas float if Dungey rode for Monster Energy KTM?

I like it but I would like to see the night show start with the LCQs. This would still give all of those privateers some TV time that they need in order to draw sponsorship.

i would love a 3 race format . We would have riders going for it as much as friese does .not kind of pulling over or not trying to pass back ,because they know they will never hold them off for 20 laps ,but for 10 they might be able to hang it out and stay in front . i am sure the top riders will bitch but it will be great for the fans

I think it would be similar to Monster Cup/Motocross where an overall win is handed out. I don't think all three mains would count as "race wins" in the sense of records or even that night. For instance, we wouldn't say Anaheim 1 was won by Ryan Dungey, Ken Roczen and Eli Tomac (if they all won one main). We'd say Ken Roczen won Anaheim 1 if he went 1-2-2, while say Ryan Dungey went 3-1-3 and Eli Tomac 2-3-1.
That's a good point, I guess it would be a really cool to see three starts worth points!

Do this but keep 15 and 20 min mains.
Yes, we don't want those who excel at straight rhythm to gain an advantage, that's for sure. Keep the longer mains.

the start gate is the biggest problem in SX . Go to a grid start . we would have a epic race every week . the best races tend to be luck, when all the top guys get good start s together . why no rig it so it happens ever race.

If the goal is to have guys fighting for the win each week(which is what the fans want) instead of focusing on getting solid points and managing a championship(which is what a smart rider does), then make 1st worth 30pts and 2nd worth 22 points instead of 25 and 22. Just an idea. Not sure if it would create a bigger gap for the points leader, or if it would allow quicker points recovery for riders who had a mechanical or overall bad night. Or maybe start the points at 50 for 1st, and do a bigger gap between each positions all the way down to 20th. This would make passes more valuable to all the riders.

I do like the MEC, but me personally, wouldn't like to see that for a full season.

Night show as follows

450 Moto 1 - 15+1
250 Moto 1 - 15+1

450 Moto 2 - 15+1
250 Moto 2 - 15+1

450 Moto 3 - 15+1

No jokers, no chase.

I like the idea, but shortening each main will make getting the holeshot even more important. I don't like the idea of of a race being decided on who gets the start. It just makes the rest of the race not as interesting.

They need to do something. That's for sure.

I'll still say they need to produce better racing on the track. Pay championship points in the qualifiers and invert the start order for the main.

Any format change that doesn't address the on the track racing is nothing more then scooping water out of the boat.

The first 75 feet of the race has become too important. That's the problem.
The best fix for that is slowest riders get best gate pics. Move all the best guys to the outside lanes.

Three 15 min +1 mains would be brutal on the guys. More time for them to get tired and hit the ground hard.

3 10 min+1 mains would be better IMO

So that's 75 laps on tracks that can't even handle 35 laps. Hell, the tracks are already blown out before the 450 main even starts. No way it's going to hold up for 75 laps.
