"Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships." -Mitchell Jordan

Stewart's realistic and almost inevitable reign in the sport was undone by the things he didn't do.

-look both ways before crossing the track
-say no to cross-jumping in traffic
-say no thank ya to the backward Yamaha for 2010
-give Aldon Baker a million dollars to just go back to where he came from
-keep his finger on the clutch

You could also say he should've...
-gone only fast enough to win
-learned to settle for a podium
-played nice with Chad Reed (so he would play nice in return)
...but that's the stuff we actually like about James Stewart.

Thx for following up. Good conversation.

I do think though a 6 vs 5 overall differential is a lot different then 1 vs 11. In my scenario not many folks would agree that the guy who only won a single overall beats the guy with 11 overall wins. And keep in mind the guy with 11 overall wins only had a single worst moto finish of 3rd! So he had 11 overall wins and one second overall. But the other guy who wins the championship had 1 overall win and 11 second overalls. On its face, that make no sense he is the champion if you give so much weight to overall wins in MX.

I think if you valued moto wins more, which the current points system does, you will see different lifetime results. May not change life rankings, but you would see guys like RC have an even more dominant position.

Good stats and information overall from everyone. Definitely a compelling thread and data from folks.

Excluding any data and just going by the eye test I like this order.

RC
RV
JS
MC
Dungey
RJ

I'm not including older folks like Bailey, Hannah, etc. when you get too strung out you will need old and modern era lists.

Your list isn't much different than mine would be, and it would all come down to how the question is asked. Fastest? Best racer? Most consistent? Racer I'd bet the farm on in one big race?

Each of those would alter my list.

I think the takeaway is that if someone calls a rider the best ever and you don't agree with them, it's not the end of the world and you can still discuss it like adults.

Thanks for not making me cry!
Was thinking about this today , and I gotta say , it's cool you and TXdirt are possibly forming some sort of calculation chart of some type. I've spent a lot hours over at the vault just sifting through years and years of all the MX and SX stuff. Having something on top of that is pretty dang cool. I'm a stats guy , and have always loved figuring out things like that. I know they don't tell the whole story of a riders career , but never the less , it shows a pretty solid foot print of what that rider did over many years.

How's SE72s career holding up? And now we're talking against the world.. that dude must rank as the all time best, 10 world championships (premier class).. rolls around Stewart on the outside standing on the pegs like he had to go by an 80cc kid thats in the way and that was back when Stewart was in his prime and Everts about to guit.

If someone would do a chart that includes dnf and dns stats that would be interesting. For instance, the only SX I ever remember MC not starting was the night the lights went out. He was remarkably durable and crashed out of very few races. He broke his handlebar clamps once it seems.

While it was said that it is misleading to list championships because that may not show how dominant a rider really was, it is also skewed to leave championship "credit" out of the picture.

I mean surely a rider who has a substantial amount of wins AND championships should be considered more than a rider with just wins. Riding extremely fast/winning and keeping your shit together/winning championships over the course of your career is harder in all aspects than just racking up solo victories.

I'm pretty sure that if James had the championships we all thought he would have, these "superfans" who focus only on wins would be singing a different tune. We'd never hear the end of it.

This one is getting old and euros always bring it up. I have not really been a JS fan since the 259 days but this is facts. Go look at the post race press conference. He didn't want to crash so he let simply let Everts by. Why you ask? Because the US kicked everyone's ass that year for the overall and if he went down they would have lost. Nice rose tinted glasses you have in your revisionist history though.

edit: rose tinted, not tinted rose

I was not a fan of JS7... With that said, Bad Brad Lackey won less than 20 races and only 2 championships. Magoo never won a championship... Stats don't mean as much in moto as they do in stick and ball sports as far as using them to measure the accomplishments and status.........

James Stewart at his peak was something we've NEVER seen. How many people were ever fast enough to land on the GOAT in his prime....? That wasn't getting lapped. Or stop on the track and let the second place competitor pass him just to prove he could wax his ass....!

James has had to deal with shit that would cripple most of the fragile ego's of the motocross stars. IMO

James might not of been the first to do things, but he took this sport to a new level, a higher level. A claim VERY few can make..... Just my 2 cents.

From what his fans on here say, he leads the stats on crash n burns leading to a lot of concussions .. Is that the goal of a smart champion racer ???
The guy you used for your screen name has him beat, ironically.
I know about Magoo, one of the greatest 500 riders ever !!! like I said, from seeing the bubba fan posts ,they say hes had to many wrecks and concussions, that's their excuse for why he cant ride, not mine ,im going by what his fans say on here.. also his dad was even getting on his ass for blamin the bike last yr.also tellin him about bad lines in corners getting passed. I have my opinion hes not the best as his fans say . saw way 2many before he was born, and the last guy that really impressed me was LaRocco ,when he was about 16 or 17 ..was fast on 125 and 250 but when he got on a 500 he rode like a older mature rider and was really getting down and dominant.. Never saw bubba ride a 500 ..

James is a top 5 rider of all time (modern era). To say otherwise would be nonsense. I'm not a super fan, but I'm a fan of great racers. He is an incredible rider. So I'm a fan. As a former racer I'm a fan of all these guys! What they can do on a dirt bike is amazing and few can truly understand. Go stand on top of a triple jump at track walk and watch your balls go up into your stomach! Lol Go walk the track after a national and stand in ruts that are 50 yards long and go past your knees deep!

ESPN still decided he was the greatest athlete of all time.
I like this. I would definitely call James Stewart the Bo Jackson of Moto, but he does have a good amount of titles too, unlike Bo.
