We built a husky 350 that just won the the baja 1000 limited pro class this year that hit an indicated 103 on gps on the dry lake bed.
It started life as the FE model (2016) which is the old gen motor, top mounted fuel injector, and only made 45 hp in stock form!
The new mx models with proper gearing should do around 105 stock
We have developed a heavily modifed head for the 350 that improves power everywhere but most importantly adds great power to midrange and peak torque.
The other mod I suggest is the twin air throttle body kit with the sleeve installed. This helps the low and mid a good bit too.
The ktm is designed with a large port, big valves, short stroke, big bore so it will never be truly an "xr400-650" type motor. the air speed in the port is just too lazy until piston speed picks up. Our port helps this hugely...but unless yamaha or kawi decided to make their version of a 350 with a smaller bore, longer stroke and smaller port you will never quite find the 450 esque 350 you want.
The other solution is run an aftermarket ignition, raise the rev limit 1000 rpm, go up 2 teeth, scream its lungs out and replace parts often
Here's the.deal, the 450 isn't scary, the power is usually extremely controllable. I am a smaller guy and never had too much power issues, ever. It's actually quite enjoyable. I love the 450 tractor like power
Woods riding or tight tracks you're gonna feel a big difference. It's a pain riding a bigger bore in tight quarters.
Last year I did a KTM ride day. I went from tiny 125 to big 450 in succession At the time I was racing the kx250f. Naturally I felt most comfortable on the 250sx and 350sxf. The 450 felt too big and powerful.
Then I got the 350, then I got the 450.
If you get a 450, you WILL go through an adjustment period . It may be 5 minutes, it may be several hours. Going from 350 to 450 was 5 minutes.
Im sure though, once you get used to it you're gonna like it.
Isle of Man TT star Guy Martin was competing as well as scott_nz
But love my 16 KTM 450. Going to demo a 350 this Friday. I've ridden an older 350 and was impressed with it. I plan on picking up a used one next year and doing some mods. Curious what the cross-over point is with money dumped into a 350 vs a stock engine and exhaust 450.
Pit Row
It definitely doesn’t have the torque of a 450, but to me that’s a good thing - I’m less likely to get in trouble inadvertently. Still can ride the whole track in 3rd gear if I want - the Rekluse helps with that. However when I need the power, like on the start or up a hill like Glen Helen, it’s there in abundance
I'd like to hear more from people who have gone the big bore route. Any feedback would be appreciated.
