Metal Mesh behind Start Gate MXGP 2017

Sounds good, I don't think it will cost much for each club to have it and each rider if worried can get a sheet from the scrap yards or buy some nice new sheets for practice.

WA had a ban on Concrete starts as per fim rules which stated something about the 3m behind the gate had to be the same as in front of the gate. One club held a junior national and ripped theirs up only for the rule to be changed again.

A lot of riders on concrete starts didn't sweep their gates and actually threw dirt on and some built a little mound for the rear wheel, both worked as the guy in Alice got every holeshot after throwing dirt on pad. Same with the other guy who was laughed at but holeshot his races at arenacross and motox.

I was shocked by watching the gates fall how some are slow while others dropped straight away, Kalgoorlie was one that had dramas.while our club had a box around the starter and the rider on the left could see when he was ready to let them go. When we travelled which was every 2 weeks I found it unreal the amount of starters whose sons started next to the box or got the jump on the others, Good Times.

I agree to some extent too. What's next, metal grates on all jump faces to keep them "fair" and "consistent"

It makes the most sense to me from a TV standpoint though, no more need to waste time with all the farming behind the gate.

I can't see it saving any time. The riders will still be there at the same time before the start, but they just won't be prepping gates.

On another matter, I hope they fix it down well....

first ever race with a concrete start I was not prepared. didn't have a broom etc. My son flashed that quick, how could you let me down dad look at me. I used my foot to get most of the dirt off leaving just a little bit on there. he got 3 out of 4 hole shots that night.. The one he missed is because a friend of his swept the crap out of the gate for him. gate dropped and he went all kinds of sideways. we decided right then and there to never use a broom again lol...

As far as the metal behind the gate goes im split,
1 yes it takes the gate prep out of it and may make for more "equal" starts. but then where does it stop? gate prep is a part of the sport.
2 change is good give it a shot and see what happens.
3 I sure hope local tracks don't do this. seems to me like its a good way to eat up a rear tire in an already expensive sport.

"Wonder how long before the rocket scientists at MX Sports catch on ?"

Never, not on this one.

Also, we had 150 races years ago (Cooper Webb won a couple) and we got pilloried by the anti-Honda people here. We've had two-stroke races at Glen Helen and Washougal with good feedback. The drug-testing, concussion protocol, the one-day format, Saturday races (which the vast majority in the paddock like), addition of LCQs, Wheels-on-the-Ground flags, live (and free) streaming are just a few of other things we've changed up in recent years, with plenty more changes to come.

Oh, and welcome to Vital, Colorado2day, I see you've been a member since 11/4/2016 and all seven of your posts seem to have the same message:

"Coombs and family know this, Davey just doesn't have the Balls to make it happen Like the Euros have."

"MX Sports needs to get off their high horse and make it happen. Current 4 strokes are too expensive and the sport will die unless MX Sports takes a page from the Euros and gives upcoming talent something to strive for. 100 more riders at every National trying to qualify for the 125 Pro class ? Where is the downside ?"

Can't fit 100 more riders into a one-day program, in the pits or on the schedule, is the downside.

Only 62 days until Anaheim, thank God.

Mesh will be even...at least until it fills up with roost. What's under the mesh will also have to be consistent.

because we need change to grow this sport, I suggest,

for SX they should make a standard length of grating, say 15 feet behind the starting gate and then get rid of the gate drop and replace it with lights similar to drag racing.

then each bike could have a hook like attachment to the frame and the grating would have a catapult system similar to an aircraft carrier. the bikes would launch from the rear of the grating with the mechanic in charge of actually initiating the launch when the lights change to green. the rider would no longer have to worry about timing the gate drop and would just rely on his mechanics reflexes.

they would just fly out of the gate like a bull rider leaving the shute. 22 bikes side by side into the first corner.
Laughing Laughing Laughing this actually had me LOL

All sports tweak things to help the sport grow. Moto hasn't grown because we're stuck in 1980.
I don't see 2 strokes racing? Somethings missing!

spot on except for the part about Honda. Yes you did have the 150 race but only Honda makes a 150 and yes they footed the bill but you have also said it would be unfair to have a 125 class or 2 stroke class where some OEMs no longer make them like Honda. You cant have it both ways and I think this is where people get the idea that Honda has more influence than the other OEMs in decisions regarding classes and rules. Its was Honda's choice to quit making 2 strokes just like Kawasaki and Suzuki same as its Yamaha and KTM/Husky's choice to keep making them. If Honda does not want to participate that is there choice but to let them have much of a say in the matter is also unfair to the other OEMs who are investing in both 2 and 4 stokes and most dont have anywhere near the resources as Honda but they still make it happen. But I also don't believe its completely up to you so it would be unfair to blame you for the decisions of many others.

DC,
Glad to see your paying attention. I hear you. You do something neat like the Honda Euro 150 race and the anti Honda people jump your ass. It's got to feel like you can't win at times I am sure.

I have no opinion on the metal mesh. Could make things more even, but you would have to have it on the front side of the gate also.
Where does it stop ? As someone else mentioned, on jump faces ? Metal mesh on the start line might be worth a try and would be relatively easy to transport, if somebody else was paying for it !

On the 125s, we gotta do something to lower the cost of racing, and 2 strokes are the answer. A National 125 series with rounds in the West and East and a Dave Coombs Memorial Shootout at the last round.....

Think of the dealers who would love to sell 125s and locals who would be thrilled to try and qualify for a National ? Hear ya on lack of room, but for 100 more paying customers racing ? I bet room could be found at more than half the tracks ? Plus the extra spectators those 100 riders would entice to come watch them ? And the sound and smell of 2 strokes ? Win Win Win

Keep it simple. No age limit. As someone suggested, pro am like arenacross. Any 125 2 stroke. Claiming rule and sensible tech inspection and tear down rule. Make it fun and bring guys out of the woodwork.

Give it a shot at the tracks it will work at ?
Be a hero ; )

Best Regards,
FMB2

First round, business as usual. After that reverse the gate picking order. So out of the riders who make it in the main, the rider with the least amount of series points gets first gate pick, next guy up in points gets 2nd pick etc. up until the current points leader who gets what ever spot is left. That might mix it up a bit
