Rare shot of David Bailey getting out of shape in front of me at the 250 National at Lake Whitney in '83. Wish I could say we were battling for a podium spot. Instead it was late in the moto and he was lapping me. I hit the ground hard on the first lap, but stayed out there trying to get some national points in the 100 degree heat. It was my first national moto. Should have pulled off and saved it for the second moto. Came close to heat exhaustion in the second moto while running inside the top 20. Washed out in a turn at about the 20 minute mark and could never get going again. Ended up pulling off the track before the end of the moto. They were coming off the track like flies that day. This was the first year they changed from 40 + 2 to 30 + 2. Its brutal out there. Nothing but respect for those guys back then and the warriors today.

Cool pic!!! My uncle, moms brother, was factory pro Furman Gray. He told me all about the 40+ 2 races. Those guys were in shape and strong back in the 70's. You as well if you were in the early 80's. My first 2-stroke was a 75 Yamaha YZ80. If it fell on you, it took forever to get it off, lol.
