HRC number plates

So I picked up an 83 CR480 this week, it could hardly be considered a project, because it's pretty clean already. I had a full-on nerdgasm when the guy I bought it from pulled out an actual HRC Double strap screen door front number plate! I've never even seen one of these in the wild except for on the actual Honda display bikes. so I think at this point I have no choice but to go full Magoo replica.....

but now that I've got one of these number plates in my possession it's got me thinking: What sort of interest would there be in reproductions of this part? My boss is a vintage nut too, and has shown some interest in moving the project forward...I also have a couple of the PlasticWerks Factory replica flat plates that I know we would sell if they were available again. Any takers?

You would be able to sell the HRC double strap quite easily to the UK and AUS vintage set, I think everybody has been crying for a PlasticWerks USD plate for forever. UFO did a run of clear front plates but they weren't even close to as good as the PW ones. The PW ones usually go in the $200 and up range and get gobbled up immediately from sites like VintageBikeAds.com

What process are you evaluating? Injection or vacuum molding?

I think injection would be too expensive for me from a tooling cost standpoint, but we have access to a vacuum form machine...

Pro Circuit used to sell them in 1985, along with other assorted Honda stuff (this ad was from 1983). Works swing arms, works stands, HRC Casio watches, etc... Had a blast during that time being around the shop then.

I'd be interested in PW plate too, but i'm a little worried about the vacuum forming method. If they didn't look like the real deal then there's no point really as you couldn't use them on any replica builds which is what most people want them for. People should get together and get UFO to do them exactly...

I totally understand and share your concern. we'll just have to see how it turns out I guess... I'm not sure if the original HRC ones were injection molded or Vacuum formed. My 83 HRC plate looks very similar to Maier plastic when you get up close. The PW plates I have I think are probably injection molded, but i'm not 100% sure. If this ends up happening i'll make sure they're correct, my goal would be to have them turn out so close to the real thing that you couldn't tell the difference.
