Pretty simple question but I'm sure it will turn into an arguement.

I think Dungey is the most likely canidate to get his first national title.

MA800 would be my next choice but he might wanna stay with 800.

They should make it illegal for anyone to ever wear the number four on a motorcycle ever again

I think it's been retired for a few more years.

But...I did hear a rumbling the other day about changes coming for the current permanent numbering system.

Permanent may not be quite as permanent as it used to be.

I was already having flashbacks of RC seeing dungey whipping a zook in fox gear, I think he'd be a good candidate.

The best thing to happen would be to go to the top 40 points system! 20 in SX !

"Permanent may not be quite as permanent as it used to be..."

Say that with a twang. That sounded like a country song.

Everything, lately - sounds like a country song tho.....

If JLaw found a way to win the nationals this year. You know he'd do it.

Nice scoop. I would love to see the permanent number system ELIMINATED.

x a trillion dollar bailout! i know for marketing reasons permanent numbers are good but this isnt NASCAR ! the riders need to earn their numbers... leave the 3 digits for permanent if they so choose it...

It would take some stones for any rider to wear the #4 in professional MX.
To much history there.

Not that I know anything about what GuyB was referring to, but.....Ahem...

DMG = Daytona Motorsports Group
akin to NASCAR

in NASCAR, numbers are owned by THE TEAMS, not the riders.
They are leased to the teams by NASCAR

I'm not sure if that is a great idea either.

That's not a good fit for motocross, IMO.

Only in NASCAR do they make such an effort to identify the driver with a number.

The former AMA numbering system was perfect. You could basically tell how good the guy was just by looking at the number plates. It was a great tradition in the sport for a long time, and it would be a welcome return.

Run what you earned. - I like the sound of that.
Run what you leased.- Sounds like the most money buys the best numbers. L.A.M.E.

I gotta go against the grain here. Originally I thought the permanent number idea sucked, but have since come to prefer it. I think that for casual observers, it makes it much easier to "get into" the sport, as the rider's aren't playing musical numbers every year. If you're really into the sport, you'll know what position the various riders were in last year anyway.

The point was really driven home the other day when my son and I were watching some old SX videos. When watching races from different years, you weren't sure who was who until the announcer made some comment.

I do like the idea of different colored backgrounds for the current series leader, as well as last year's champ. Getting rid of the side panel numbers seems counter productive toward figuring out which rider just made the pass on the other side of the track.

Agree.

No.72 will not be used anymore in GP's. Belongs to Everts.

I here that.

I can appreciate the whole marketing aspect but for me the numbers should always indicate the previous years standings. If anything it points out the top guys on the track to the less knowledgeable fans.

the way it is now......there only #'s.
but there is a different significance if it was earned by points position.

they can always light up the riders and #'s on those stadium teleprompters or include a riders sheet at entry ......with sponsors posted all over it ($).
