My son is way into it. Came away from Colombia ranked world #1 for his age this year. Not looking foward to him hitting jumps like this at all - lucky we have some time. These guys have to be so precise in their riding. The big jumps are really cool but IMO bad for the racing itself. Guys in the pack rubbing elbows won't get that good drive to hit the big jumps & have to bail out. The 8 man field gets narrowed to 1 or 2 riders in a couple straights just by virtue of loosing a little speed leading to a jump.
Who is your son? I know quite a few who went and came back with plates. Thats pretty cool he got the 1 plate. It isnt easy, at all.

Justin Perkins. Here's a link to his worlds races in Colombia. The "Boys 7 Final" was his main event:

I think they think this Olympic BMX will grow the Sport but when I look at it from a parents perspective all I think is no fucking way is my kid doing that.
A standard BMX track would be completely different paved corners or not , people might be more inclined to go give it a try.

There was a ton of criticism from the elites in 06-07 and the 08 olympics about the sx tracks. Now, the elites love them. Took a few years and a fresh crop of talent that learned at a younger age how to ride them. Ask any of the elites now and they will tell you they prefer the big hill, sx tracks over standard tracks. There are 6 across the u.s. Now and Louisville, KY is almost finished with their rebuild at Derby City. That will make 7. Several elites have them on private land as well. Hunter Pelham has one in Texas several guys train at, both elite pro and amatuer riders. Its the future for pro bmx....

Pictures of these tracks do them no justice, they are so huge looking in person. I've been down to the OTC in chula and it's crazy how big these obstacles are when your standing next to them.My son raced some amateur supercross this year and probably race supercross next year when he turns pro..... Hopefully Nic Long is ok. Saw a video of him eating shit pretty hard in practice today.
That was weird, like he couldn't decide to take the half pedal leading to the face & hesitated. Looked like he will be fine though.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the track and challenging the best riders in the world. Redbull dreamline jumps are much bigger (albeit there not racing them) and the top dudes can hit them perfect every run.. Not to mention flip/spin and trick them. Check these images.

My last dirt contest was in France at the Lords Of Dirt in Frejus and we were hitting these with ease.

I grew up racing BMX and then trnsitioned to a 10 year career in freestyle BMX. It's all about the way they build the takeoffs and landings. With all my experience it was actually easier to hit well built bigger jumps than small technical ones.

Remember the Woodward (SP?) Downhill BMX tracks from years ago? Awesome stuff. Things got even hairier with the MTB versions of it, with them putting logs and boulders etc between the gaps.

I helped build parts of that course. Was one of the coolest races.

Rose, is 4X still going on up in your area? I used to try and watch that as much as I could and even cut a little secret track in down a highline easement a few years back. By the way, that video was nuts. Thanks for posting.

This guy raced a little BMX in his day and he turned out to be a pretty good MX rider.

Riding with Dale Holmes has that effect. Dale is in a league of his own. Everyone he works with wins championships. Maris, Becerine, Connor Fields, now Dean. Hes got the Midas touch for sure

Anyone have an explanation for the Hallman leathers? Dad had his kids name on his pants? Named after another Stefan? Bought them on Ebay?

The live TT stream starts in 5 min.

Dammit, not so good start for 2x champ latvian. But he had the same rough start in London, but still won.

As a bloke who was in at the start of BMX in Australia, who has made thousands of frames and goes back to it between operations, I get a little sad when I see 'Road tyres' and tar (brick / pavers at some tracks)corners and jumps.

But, fair enough, it can make tracks "all weather' usable, and keep maintenance during events in hand. But hell, put most of the ( average, or even pretty high level ) riders on a dirt track, with wearing, rough , loose corners etc, and many are just lost at sea. So, they have (very) old, aggressive near cripples like me giving them a hard time.......

My biggest gripe is that tracks, even (my) local tracks, have become nearly ' All Pumping, All The Time' . Buggerall pedaling, and that shits me. I also wish they'd make the tracks much, much longer, especially at the Pro level.

The track being somewhat, shall we say, "Gonzo" at the Olympics , with just the Pros there is fair enough, too. But, the consequences of an eff up / tangle are going to be severe. I really, Really hope all stay safe.

It's the most spectacular sport in the Summer Olympics. We just need Down Hill in it - that will take a few old UCI, and many National level bigwiggs, to shuffle off this mortal coil, and, the dumping of one of the sacred, arcane Track Cycling events. It's not a 'new sport', just a different event in Cycling.
We were fortunate and we had shovels.

Good Times

Great Memories

I remember we had to build our own wheels out of "10 speed" hubs, a rear box-rim and motorcycle spokes (front). I remember the 1st "Little-John-Murphy" frames.

Oh shit, huge crash again!

I'm not into BMX but aren't there more crashes than usual on this course?

Sam is looking really strong. He's gonna be tough. Looks like the US is gonna have a good shot at some medals, though.
