I had an 83 K model back in '83-84. Very fast. I loved that bike. One sore spot was the water pump / impeller shaft bore not sealing well, and filling the trans up with water. After a few tries of fixing the stock cover, one including a bronze bushing fit to the bore, I gave up, and bought a cover from an 84 L model. Fixed the problem for good.

Suspension was good, rims were a bit soft. It was more than a match for the 83 CR250, which everyone seemed to think was a better bike. Won a lot of 250B class races with mine here in Florida.

The YZ60 ignition swap was one of the wrench report mods. Also, many had frame cracking issues around the steering head area, but mine held up well.

Only problem I had was replacing a piston on a bit too loose of a bore, without boring the cylinder. Broke the piston, littered the lower end with metal.

After a crank rebuild, bearings ,bore, and top end, it was as fast as ever. Good bike.

I was always an RM guy, but this girl was given to me, and I have a soft spot for the early '80's MX bikes, so what the hell, I'll fix her up. Not going to do a full resto on her, just a basic rebuild and a thorough clean up. I want it to be safe to zip around the track at race pace.

That K looks like it just needs a wash, change a few fluids, set the suspension and she is good to go. I noticed the pipe is a bit dinged up. I put a Jemco cone pipe recently on my 125 K and the difference was amazing. Looks great too. So, if it was mine, i would have fresh top end, emulators in forks, make sure rear shock is OK, Jemco pipe, new air filter, oil, tighten everything up and go have fun.

Well I'm getting the itch to start tearing into it here pretty soon. Anyone know how Yamaha is for OEM parts for these. I mean, how much stuff should I source through my local Yamaha shop, and how much aftermarket.

And if aftermarket, where for what. I'm going to do all new bearings on everything, engine crank and seals. Gonna have to bore it since it's seized, but just enough to clean it up. I think someone mentioned water pump seals. Going to do new brake and clutch cables, and shoes too. She'll get a suspension freshening too.
What else guys.

I only ask since I've been a Suzuki guy my whole life (except for a 1987 CR 125 I had), so I don't know much about the Yammerhammers.
