Can all three co-exist without some effect on performance? Seems like some guys lose steam/focus/etc. once they start a family. What would you advise your kid if he was a burgeoning pro (i.e. earning a real income and in/close to top 10) and wanted to get hitched?

I don't give a shit how happy your marriage is (29 years here, but dated for 7 years while I plowed through my own early profession (not an athlete)---what would you yell your kid?

It hasn't worked out for all of 'em---I don't want to name names----but give me a couple more beers and.... Evil Definitely case-by-case, but if your pro career is 5-10 years long and it starts at 17, would it be prudent to wait and stay focused? Starting a family in your early 30's seems to be the 'new normal' in most professions.

When I was about 12, I questioned my Dad about exactly that...."how can you go out every weekend, balls to the walls, and often end up in an ambulance...when you have a family...are you selfish?" He set me straight right quick. "Son, I do my best to provide for you and your sister, 6 days a week, busting my ass....but when Sunday comes and that gate drops...that's MY time." Not a pro athlete, but you just have to dis-associate yourself to achieve anything in life.

Why do they all get married so young? Some kids are under 25 getting tied down. They haven't even hit their peak physicality and intellectuality.

I would suggest age has a lot more to do with any drop in performance/balls than marriage does-especially at a young age.
