pro riders vision and glasses/contacts

Ok a serious question here. Ever notice literally none of the successful pros/privateers wear glasses or contacts? And this isn't even a recent phenomenon within the last 30yrs. The best racers have never required any sort of corrective vision technology. And especially within the last 10yrs with Lasik being such a success you'd expect to hear more about poor vision and corrective technology becoming more common and being a successful and improvising measure. But I haven't at all, and I'm seriously considering Lasik. My question I guess is if we will ever see a SX/MX champion that has required some sort of vision correction whether that be by surgery or just corrective lenses? And also to ask for experiences from other riders/racers that have either used corrective lenses/contacts while riding and/or have gone the Lasik route which I am really considering

barcia is wearing prescription glasses.
I've seen roczen wearing glasses too but that may have been more of a hipster thing, so not sure if he actually needs them.

I know a few people that had surgery done and they are all very happy with the results.

I thought I remembered hearing Emig say he had LASIK surgery and it completely messed up his night vision. I've always worn glasses or contacts since I was young, and only had one race where I lost a contact and had to pull off. Didn't Windham wear contacts too?

I'm pretty sure I remember Cairoli had some issues with his contact lenses at one of GP's in the past years.

Found it:

So basically there is a multi time champion that didn't have a perfect vision and needed corrective lenses/contacts.

The only pro I can remember wearing glasses when he raced was Larry Brooks . Other than that how would you know who is or isn't wearing contacts ?

I had Lasik, a dozen years ago. My night vision acuity decreased, but I haven' t needed to put up with glasses and contacts, and all the crap and expense that goes along with them. Now I am 47, and my near vision is going. In a couple of years I'll just go and get a pair of reading glasses from WallyMart.

Oh, when I had it done, my left eye hurt baaaad for a day. Then everything was fine.

I am not a pro.

I'm also curious about it. I've worn contacts for about 15 years and would love to get lasik. Are any of you guys on here eye doctors? I was looking into getting it done and the eye dr my sister works for actually said he's not a huge fan of it. I didn't get any more details from him as to why, but he said every conference they go to the doctors mostly all wear glasses and contacts, not the lasik route. My eye dr wears glasses, too. Just kind of got me skittish to the thought of getting my eyes worked on.

I had lasik done about 7 yrs ago, and it has been great. I wore glasses for 30 yrs, and I will never go back. Contacts were always a hassle and I hated my glasses. The only drawback I have had is I am a lot more sensitive to sunlight. Not a huge issue, I just get to buy cooler goggles

I had Lasik done four years ago and woke up to a whole new life.. I could see sans glasses/contacts for the first time in 15 years. Best day of my life, no more contacts moving in my eye behind goggles, no more daily contacts, no more hassle. Best thing ever. I legitimately went thru a day or so with being pissed off that I hadn't done it earlier.. Sure people say it will fade or wear off over time but the place I had it done insured it for $200 per eye for my lifetime.

glasses/contacts wearer here.

i've been turned down for Lasik twice now, so i have just accepted it. i wear glasses about 95% of the time though. i have degenerative vitreous in my right eye from an eye injury and i also developed an astigmatism, so contacts bug the shit out of me now.

Had Lasik in 1999 or so - was awesome....now in 2016 I have a astigmatism in my left eye caused by Lasik....

I've been using this contact now for a month or so. They are very good and stay in place will riding and racing. Does not matter if it is a moto or all dayWoohoo

I passed on the progressive contacts - I chose the contact for distance and use reading glasses for reading.

My left eye is my dominant so the vision really sucked until I got the mono duet.....

There much bigger than std contacts and take a bit to get the "Install" figured outCool Wink Pinch

Been looking into this quite a bit recently so I'm glad this came up. Couldn't find much but I remember Barcia saying he had vision issues a few years back, I think it was right when he moved up to 450's and I assumed he had lasik. I was looking into this because over the last 5 years my vision has gotten gradually worse so I went in to get a lasik evaluation but learned I could not get lasik because of an eye disease (keratoconus). I've been going through a 3 month process of trying different types of contacts that would fit the shape of my eye but have not had luck finding any I felt comfortable riding with. I had previously just been riding with nothing but that is getting flat out dangerous now so I went ahead and ordered up a prescription goggle insert from sportrx which I will be trying out this weekend. I actually was resisting going this route because I thought the insert looked a bit dorky behind the lens (even with a 100% mirror lens you can still see it) but after not riding for 3 months I had to put that aside, doing what I love is most important. I am so thankful to have found a solution I feel comfortable riding with and can't wait to experience the new world of riding with good vision.

Blake Baggett wore Pro-Vue goggles when he was younger. I assume he wears contacts now.

Everything I have read above is old tech. I had incredibly bad vision with astigmatism (in addition, night vision always suffered). I wore hard gas permeable lens that helped but no 20/20.
Went with mapping in the back of the eyeball, lazar to correct the astigmatism and implants to give me better then 20/15!!!!!. Admittedly I live in the Zionsville/Indianapolis area so sports medicine is huge (racing and every major stick and ball sport, etc). It was not cheap, but the results were mind bending in a perfect way. My only regret is that this tech was not offered in my youth....

I had my eyes corrected in 1998. Before that I could not read the one large letter on the eye chart. I needed to put my glasses down in the same spot to find them. In sports and racing they would sometimes fall out and be blind. My eyes are still perfect. I do think I am more light sensitive and my vision and night not as good, but it was worth it!
