Also just found another 04 for $2,000 and it looks like it has never been ridden. https://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/mcy/5657759597.html

I would love to be able to find a bike that good for that sort of money....that would make a perfect practice bike

Side note... I personally love the steel frame yz's rather than the aluminum. Just my opinion.
Thanks...I'm sure I will find something, I'm not quite ready yet anyway, just checking out the market.
I plan to buy a new 2017 ktm 450 in about February in time for the start of race season. I will probably have to pay $13k for one..
In the meantime I will be looking for ( hopefully) a 2006 or newer YZ 250 2 t , for under $3k to use as a practice bike , haven't ridden for two years so I need to really put some work in.
I would probably keep the 2 banger and race it in the 250 class and use the ktm in the vets. Vets races are stupid short, I weigh 67 kg and I used to be very good at starts, but last time I was racing , I was never able to get a good start on my 250 2t against the 450's, they seem to get off of concrete starting pads a lot better. I'm thinking the ktm would be a real hole shot weapon for me..
Thing is I'm pretty sure I will find a good post 06 250 f for that money when the time comes, but I might be out of luck with the two stroke...would much rather race an old two stroke than an old four stroke in the 250 class

I bought two 2003 CR125s for $900 each. Both were pretty clapped out (one being significantly more clapped out than the other) but one I have cleaned up pretty well. They both ran when I bought them, but both had blown out silencers, terrible tyres, one had rattle canned rims etc the usual molestation.

I've seen some really cheap 90s 2 strokes for less than $1000 in running condition. Last night there was an 04 RM250 for $500 in need of a rebuild. Was keen to get it but the seller message me at 3am to say the bike was sold (wtf?). I have seen other good deals, although they seem to be in Far North Queensland or W.A i.e. where few people live.

I have also bought a CRF450 for $1000 and sold for $2200. There are deals if you keep an eye out. You've gotta be quick. I got a CRF50 for $650 when they normally go for $1000, or $1500 used from a dealer. The only bikes I have bought that were over $2k were my CBR250RR and CBR600RR.

Keep an eye on Gumtree and eBay. I got one 125 off Gumtree and got another from eBay. The eBay bike was 2 states away but I was moving there soon so I had a mate get it for me ($100 his way for his service) and held onto it for me. Anyway, keep your eyes open and they will appear.

IMO Steel framed Yamaha bikes, some KX250s (early 2000s for some reason) and 98 CR250s are the cheapest bikes to be found. For 4 strokes, CRF250s and YZ250Fs seem to be the most common, but are also completely clapped out.

Oh, another bike. I bought a CRM250 for $900, spent $300 on it and didn't touch it for 3 years. Then I took it for an enduro ride and sold it for $1800 a week later.

Thanks mate! Yeah,I'm watching gumtree, bike sales and eBay all the time now. With luck I might find what I want in a month or so from now when I have the coin .
The YZ 250 two Stoke is an excellent bike and that's what I really want but I'm gonna stick to my 3 k budget so I'm gonna need to be lucky. There is a 2008 right now on gumtree for 3 k...owner says it's just had top and bottom end rebuild...I am suspicious but if I had the coin right now I'd be off to check it out for sure. It's in Melbourne.
It does seem that the cheaper bikes are in Queensland though.

I sold my my sons 2000 model CR125 for $1500 and my 2009 RMZ450 for $2400. I honestly felt better about selling the CR125 because I knew if it blew up tomorrow the guy could fix it for $300. The RMZ not so much. Lol

I swear, bike shopping on the net is a crackup!
On bike sales at the moment, a 2010 YZ 450 f , owner says it's only been ridden 3 times..I guess that justifies in his mind at least, the asking price of $10.5k. Very next ad down in order of dearest to cheapest, brand new 2016 yz450 f for $10k.
What kind of drugs are some of these people on? I mean really?

Yea, I bought a CR250 instead of stock in Solarcity. Seems to be the better deal for now.

WTF, isn't the MSRP like 8500?

With the prices of old yzs I see I'll be throwing up my '13 ktm 250sx for 6k Grinning

What don't you get about the fact that a modern 4-stroke motocross bike is a terrible used bike to own!?

I've noticed the same with clean CR500's. Sold my 450x and wanted to pick up another decent steel framed 500 essentially for dunes only. What was a $2000 bike 5 years ago is now a $3500 bike. I'm a little surprised.

Because I've never really owned one. I had a 98 model YZ 400 new and sold it after that season. In 2001 I had a 125 a 250 ( two strokes ) and raced a a YZ 426 in the thumper nats and the Aussie Nationals, I never owned that bike, just raced it and gave it back to the shop that was helping me out...
But I'm starting to get it.....seems obvious that second hand four strokes are harder to sell...
Cut me some slack....I'm old and feeble minded! It's taking me a while to catch up here..

Bottom line is that a used 4 stroke is a ticking time bomb. It's gonna go off....period. And it's going to cost a fortune to rebuild the engine. Not to mention, suspension, bearings, seals, wheels, tires, a eff'ing everything thing else to freshen up the bike. That's why people are going back to 2 strokes. It's cheaper. In America with the current regime in charge and the likelihood of it continuing.....cheaper is all that matters. That is before they control every aspect of our lives.

Right and if you go balls deep to bring one back from the dead you're left with a dated used fourstroke bike.

Versus the two strokes stopped being produced so a refreshed one is mostly on par with the brand new two stroke offerings.

Case in point, me personally I saved myself the hassle and went and got myself a brand new 2015 YZ250 rather than pick up a used bike and have to go through it. Albeit it's pretty much the same as an '06

I'm trying to get a bike again, but I'm restricted budget wise, so I'm looking at second hand.
I was shocked to see the price disparity between two strokes and four strokes on the second hand market.
I've seen people asking in excess of 3 k for 2002 model YZ 250 2 ts ...it's nuts! So hard to find a post 2006 model yz250 2t for less than 5 k.
Yet there is an abundance of late model four strokes for well under 4 k. I'm not a four stroke guy but the best deal I've spotted so far is a very clean 2006 YZ 250 f for 2.5 k....that's about 1 to 2 k cheaper than heaps of beat up 2002 to 2005 two strokes... That's the way it seems to be here in Australia, is it similar in other countries?
I was hoping to find a good YZ 250 2 t for under 3 k to use as a practice bike before I buy a new bike early next year.
It's really crazy here....they are asking as much or more for brand new 2016 YZ 250 2 t's than they are for brand new 2016 450's. Seems to be saying something that the manufacturers should be listening to
Where are you looking and where in aus are you from? Ive seen 250 2t 2014 good condition for 5k

I'm on the NSW Vic border. Been watching gumtree,eBay and bike sales. Just got introduced to Facebook buy swap and sell dirt bike group today.
There is a 2008 YZ 250 on gumtree ( in Melbourne ) at the moment. Price has been coming down , it's now $3k .
I would go and have a look but I'm just not ready to buy yet, it's gonna be another month to six weeks ,so I've been spending a boring wet weekend searching the net for what's around
Looking for an 06 or newer YZ 250 for no more than 3k
Before I started looking I thought that would be a reasonable expectation , thought there would be plenty to choose from...been off bikes for about 2 years now so I'm totally not up with things.
I was just today looking at a 2001 yz250 that was a beater...Asking price $ 2800! Seriously! It's really been quite a revelation

Gonna stick to a $ 3 k maximum budget and a mimum age of 2006 model ( YZ 250 only )

The bike needs to be sound in the engine department, particularly the clutch. Not butchered by a brainless home mechanic and generally good order.
I want it to practice on, particularly long sessions on a rut track and figure 8's etc. just to get some skills working again, then either keep it and put some money into it and make it a viable 250 class race bike, or take whatever loss and sell it as is. Regardless I will buy a new bike in Feb next year to get back into racing in the open and vets classes. I'm planning on getting a ktm 450 2017 model

How much more is it to rebuild a 4 stroke than a 2 stroke? It can't be THAT much more?

Never rebuild a 4 stroke but I would like to rebuild my 2014 CRF250 after this season.

I'm at Beechworth. Last time I had bikes I used to ride sometimes at those sand tracks out in the forest near the bomb factory at Mulwala. They are great practice tracks.
Sold my bikes about 2 years ago....totally shitted of with the child minding / race scene , sitting around all weekend enduring junior class after junior class waiting for a poxy 5 min race...
Anyway all I do for fun now is sit on the couch , watch movies and drink beer...that's getting me ( and my liver ) absolutely nowhere ,so it's back to racing. Wanna be competetive in the over 40's vets in the northern regions and vics, start over again in c grade and see if I can get up to b grade...was in a grade back in 2001 but never tried to improve once I made it....more or less quit til 2011 and went racing again on a 144 yam and a 250. Actually won my first race back in the vets at tallangata 2 day and the next one at Myrtleford but then got hosed at the vics...got shitted off with the hassles with having to bring my own personal " corner marshal " to the races and being refused when I didn't have one and chucked it in again.
Got bored with riding on my own and sold my bikes a couple years ago.
There's my boring life story....you probably didn't really need to read that...
Anyway back racing for me and just as seriously as when I was 18....call it a mid life crisis

Never rebuild a 4 stroke but I would like to rebuild my 2014 CRF250 after this season.
I've been looking at that myself this weekend. The wrench rabbit kits seem pretty good and there's not a huge price difference between the two and four stroke versions, both include complete new crank shafts Problem is the cylinder head on four strokes. If you need all new valves ,springs and seats on a 5 valve head and want to go with titanium valves that a lot of bikes have as standard, you could well be up for as much as $ 1 k or more in parts alone and most people wouldn't have the equipment and knowledge to recondition a cylinder head so you are gonna be paying labour on top.
If a four stroke lunches itself and you throw a valve or cam chain...you can totally destroy the cylinder head ,in which case you bike might well be a write off....

Well if you are looking for somewhere to ride go out to Yarrawonga Recreational motorcycle park its on Lanes road Peechelba doesnt seem far from beechworth. I know the owners there and its a great track. also have a flat track to practice on your 250

Last fall I picked up an '05 YZ125 for $800. Stuck around $1,000 in it and a lot of my time and sold it this spring for $2600. Didn't get rich but made some money for my time. See the kid that bought it from me tried to sell it for $3k, he was down to $2k last time I saw it posted...

In Utah, it didn't seem like prices were too high. I paid $1400 for a 2003 yz250. It wasn't bad, but I put $500 into it and rode it for a year. Sold it for $1400. I also bought a 2003 kx250 for $1500 in excellent condition. Didn't put anything into it and sold it for $1700. I didn't feel shorted or like I was ripping someone off. Just seemed like fair prices. There were some head scratchers on the classifieds like anywhere else, but it wasn't as bad as where I am now in Raleigh/Durham.
For example, at this moment, searching "250", the first bikes are:
1 - kx250- no year listed, but it's pre 1994. $2200.
2 - 2001 rm250. $2000. Not as bad, but still pretty high IMO.
3.- 2002 cr250. $2200. I guess not horrible, not good either.
4.- 1997 kx250 . $1600. No 4th gear, needs work.
5.- I would actually consider this if I wasn't leaving on a trip tomorrow. 2006 yz250 - $2100.
6.- 2000 rm250. $2000.
None of these bike make me say "wow, that is clean."
It continues like this, with some steep prices for old bikes and a decent bike here and there. I can understand the 05 and up YZ and RM prices being a little higher due to their popularity, but the other bikes have me scratching my head. I can't imagine they're getting many calls.
