Boring out a plated cylinder?

Had a question for you guys. I just traded a 94 yz250 for a 95 rm250. Got the bike home and tore the top end off. The cylinder and piston is damaged with pretty deep score marks. Looks like a ring let go. Anyways was wondering is it possible to just bore the plated cylinder out and run a piston in it like that or does it need to be bored out and a sleeve pressed in? Looking for the cheapest possible solution thanks

If you bored it out you would still have to have it replated, and you would obviously have to run a bigger piston. I'm not sure which way is cheaper. I would put a sleeve in it, if nothing else just to keep it stock bore.

What happens if you bore the plated cylinder out and run a piston in it without having it replated?

It will damage the cylinder again

It's an aluminum cylinder, you can probably guess what happens

Powerseal in PA. Awesome work, go to their web site & read up. I have had them repair& replate a number of cylinders, all work is first class & turnaround is very reasonable. Whenever I see someone has put a boreable sleeve in a cylinder that was originally plated, I shy away from the bike, to me, it"s not the correct method of repair.

Most of the sleeves available today are very soft, and do not have as long of interval between servicing of the top end as a plated cylinder. And getting one in straight, along with a proper port matching job, makes all the difference in the way the bike will run with a sleeved cylinder.
