Just got home from the race. It was awesome! James was riding the ragged edge to stay in front of Reed. He has met his match indoors. Kudos to him for hanging on for the win. It's going to be a great season, and the individual races are going to come down to who gets the start, or who likes the track better that night.

Chad Reed is a racer's racer. He worked so hard to up his game, and you could see on the podium that he was not happy with second.

Reed entered with a 25 point lead. He has an 8 race cushion 1st to 2nd. If JS falters (doesn't win) even once, he's probably toast...

As KW said a few years back, you can't win a championship in the first race, but you sure can lose one.
Reed had an 18 point lead over Stewart going into Phoenix, now it's at 15 over JS in 7th. Reed in second, 2 points behind Grant

He said he really put pressure on himself to win this one, so being so close i bet he was bummed.

Actually, he entered with an 18 point lead and that's 9 races w/ JS 1st and CR 2nd, but who is counting?

6 races, there's a 3 point buffer between 1st and 2nd, so don't say Reed is already on title protection mode, they're both going for broke.

Thats "IF" reed doesnt make ANY mistakes either.... there is no guarantees Reed wont mess up a race. From what I heard he almost threw it away a few times last.
Anything can happen.

If they both keep running at blistering speed within .5 seconds of each other they both may end up augered in a couple more times.

Yep, Reed or James could have issues, Grant certainly isn't going to just lay down....long season ahead of them still.
The best part is the racing is going to be awesome no matter which way it goes.

By mid-season Stewart is going to have that half second per lap warp speed gear working and it won't be as close, I don't think. Stewart has always found a way to get up to a speed that nobody can match. Props to Reed because he's found a little more speed, but I don't think he's going that much faster than last year based on the lap times he turns vs the other guys. In previous years, he'd go about 1 second faster than the average of the top 3 or 4 "other" guys and he's still doing about the same thing, maybe a little better. But he's giving it all he has and he's hauling ass for sure. On the other hand, Reed is pushing Stewart and in previous years, that's all he needed to do - in previous years, if Stewart was pushed he'd take himself out. Stewart is older and wiser now and I don't think he's going to do it, but like the Zen master said, "We'll see."

I have to agree with you here WhWnuckle. I think as the season goes on Stewart will find the extra speed over reed that we know he has.

On the other hand, I just don't think Reed is going to settle as much as he has in the past - I don't know why, but I was watching him at A1 and watching his times last night, and he's on it for sure. I don't know if that little voice in his head that tells him to just hang back and let Stewart take himself out is as loud as it used to be. We'll see. I'm glad that the Houston round is earlier this year, it should be good.

Reed isnt hanging back ONE bit..... he is trying to live up to his Ausi hype. They made him feel like God himself when he went home. So he is trying to do something that really hasn't been done..... Beat James Stewart heads up in a SX race. He is riding good...but I think the biggest factor is not how much reed has improved....its James on the Yamaha and getting it to work for him.
You can tell right away watching James. James used to be SUPER fast and smooth in the whoops.and now his bike is going sidways, left to right all the way through, we know thats not like him.
And in Reeds interview last night, Reed said, on the Suzuki he is now able to do things that he has never been able to do on the Yamaha.

Im not sure if it's the team or the actual Yamaha bike weakness, but I hope James gets the bike dialed in (I think he will).

I thought you were the smart one around here Dean...Oh wait, you were using your change order calculator to figure out how many races it takes to make up 18 points.

Stewart I agree has another gear if needed. It's early in the series and the tight racing helps fill the seats.

Yeah, I never saw so much ass sucking for a third place rider before, who fell while he was in second place after being passed for the lead and wound up being beaten by a rookie riding a bike that bogs on every jump and had a tuff block wrapper tied up in his rear wheel.

Anyone who thinks that Stewart is holding back isn't watching the racing. Stewart was giving it everything he had at A1 and in PHX last night. Why can't everyone just realize that the two guys are really close this year speed wise and it is going to make for a great series. Sit back and enjoy the ride. I know I will!

I was there. If anyone looked like they were on the brink of wadding, it was Stewart. At least a half dozen instances where I thought he was going down. Reed looked much more comfortable running that pace.

Good point there Zippy... even though the Yami is not yet to Stewarts spec... he is still going faster on it than Reed ever went, and still beats Reed heads up on it. Something reed has never done when he was on it.

Yea, but Stewart didn't wad. Hell RC was the king of "ALMOST" wadding, but never really did. RC taught James that you don't have to win by 30 sec, just win. That is what James is doing now. I think James has matured and has that mental fortitude to take the kind of pressure Reed was applying last night and not crack!
