It's the way it has always been so shut up and sit down...

Typical moto behavior and imo a reason this sport will always be a secondary level sport.. It has nothing to do with amateur participants and all the other bs about cost but more to do with the lack of progressive thinking. It's a sport that's stuck in a "this is what we are" mentality.

I'm not a journalist, but if i were one, i don't think i'd throw a hardball to the face straight up like that. There are other ways to get answers without sounding like a dickbag, i think.

Either way, i'm gutted for the guy. I think he has done more for this sport than most of us can even begin to understand, and the fact that he is still trying to race after hitting the deck so damn hard so may times shows that he still has a fire in him. However, things are really starting to look grim for him, maybe it's time to call it a day.

Oh I see, pretty low key.
Youd think they'd at least have the top 3 up there at the same time,

Exactly the point...

Why do you think it has shitty tv coverage? You can damn near get anything on Tv.

It's a sport that relies on the event (racing) itself. Well that doesn't cut it. If you don't race dirt bikes the likely hood you stop and watch is slim. It needs drama to sell. We need riders that don't like each other and let it be known both on and off track. We need personalities and frankly I know they're are some but what we see is a bore for most. People loved the emotional Tomac on the podium but jeez that was hardly anything... You guys can bitch all you want about what has become of this generation and the wanting the dirt, the need for all info etc but guess what? It's not changing! So you can adapt to the we want all info and we want it now mentality along with drama or you can be what this sport is and that's stuck in this is what we are and how we like it. But I will guarantee that what we have now will be the best it gets and it will gradually fade back to what it was.

so continue on with moto ways if you please but if you do quit bitching about lack of coverage and info and just be happy they give you the pleasure of watching it at all because after all you need them more then they need you.

During SX, you can usually catch the guys at the podium. For the outdoors, they have the top three from each class come into the press tent afterwards.

Some media outlets like the press conference style. Others like to try and get more one-on-one with the riders away from the formal setting.

Maybe I love the sport and I'm sick of the sport being treated like a step child? I'm sick of having to search for torrents to watch the damn race live when I can watch other bullshit sports live. I'm sick of the niceness, this sport needs many more people like Anderson and Friese on track and off. The I'm going to the top and if you're in my way I'm going to throw you out of the way. Everyone is to fucking nice nowadays. I want Reed and Stewart rivalries where after they finish they pull along side and have words, not this handshake and hug nonsense. And I want to watch it live! I don't want to have to take a computer class so I can download this and stream it to that then to my tv so I can watch.. Or switch carriers and get channel 1097 where it's on in 720p..

But I'm sure all your ass kissing followers will come tell me what's what and that's exactly what you want..

People who are trying to argue with the fact that Luongo made things a lot more professional at the races, are retards. After the race the top 3 are there, all at the same time, just like at the F1 or MotoGP. Also the winners from the EMX classes are all there. First Youthstreams press agent asks questions, then the other press agents can ask questions in public and afterwards they can ask questions privately.

YS likes it that way because they can control the questions we ask. Once an journalist from the Belgian Television BRTN|VRT (Sporza) asked a question about doping rumors around Barragan. Those television channel does also work at Soccer/Cycling/Tennis/Olympics... And thought it was appropriate journalism. He got banned from the press room, one year later the live broadcasting got canceled on the Belgian Television.

GuyB everyone makes his choices. If you choice to run around making jokes with the riders. Laugh around talk with their girls about the event, about the babies. Then I understand that you can't ask difficult questions. But denying SlowDude his fair points, is putting your head into the sand.

And nobody said that asking a difficult question is the same as acting like a dick. I've talked with RV about doping and the suspicions around Aldon. I talked with Barcia about Stewart and his positive dope test and what he thought would do with the sport. The year after I met RV again and we've talked again about other topics off course and about Tomac going to green. He gave it to me as an scoop.

That is no shit. Lol I didn't grow up that far back, but I remember looking through TV guides in Walmart to see when the next mx race would come on at 3am weeks after the actual event. Then set the VCR recorder before bed. End up fast forewording through an hour or two of sports center or some dumb shit to actually get to the race. If it even came on. We are spoiled these days!

I really like the sport and really don't care for more journalism in the sport but hey I like talking about it. I dig it for the racing and forum.

I asked the questions I asked because if a photographer is a journalist and has the potential to lose his access as a photographer because of his questions as a journalist, I could see them holding back from asking questions that push buttons.

If there is free access, no holds on the press, then I could see people asking the tough questions. Like every time Milsaps was in front of one "so what was in your locker?" Roczen "Why did you really leave The Bakery? The money?"

The press has free access to Bill Billacheck sp? They are always let in, they always ask the tough questions and he never answers anything! Good stuff!

But what is so wrong with that questions. If you ask that politely and they don't wanna talk about it they will say that. Sometimes it is a relief for those guys to ask THAT QUESTION. So he can set those things straight, finely straight!

Motocrossers are some of the most accessible athletes around. Hell, get in an autograph line and you could ask any question yourself.

Shit, with a camera a press pass you can be a moto journalist yourself. It's not like there are any real qualifications other than just getting out there and doing it, and being able to do it decently.

I grew up with the sport, racing 1975 Suzuki RM when it was new. We do, as fans, have it so much better now. For the first time, I streamed the entire Hangtown race, as my Dish gives me NBC sports, so I logged in, it was actually pretty good. I think moto reporting, for the most part, is pretty darn good. Yes, there is always room for improvement, in everything. People should understand that this sport is still pretty small compared to most other big sports. Like it or not, there is higher viewer's in Dog shows, so that's why they get preferred treatment. We should be glad we have the people working and contributing to Vital Mx. I'm sure nobody is getting rich doing it. Thanks guys. Now get those dirt bikes off my lawn!Wink

Sir, please note which came first.

McDonald's or white balance?

In my first post in this thread I did not insult anyone. Someone took it as an insult when it was not directed toward them. It was directed toward how this sport seems to treats anyone who doesn't toe the line.

I know my opinion that people like GuyB and Mr. Johnson should be able to ask questions that piss off riders/officials/Feld/DC/me/you without repercussions is an unpopular one. I just didn't think the attack would come from the direction that it did.

As for what would happen if I asked James or any other rider a bad question? I suspect I would never be allowed to ask another. That is my entire point, thanks for highlighting it for me.

I surrender. Maybe Luongo has it right.

Apparently we're going to have to agree to disagree. I know how it works on my side. You have your opinion on how things work.

Let me give you one example, and some extra insight.

In the post-race press conference, there was a local reporter who was questioning Dungey as to why he'd gotten second so many times. He ran through Ryan's entire list of second-place finishes (which is substantial) at Hangtown, and asked why he'd never won here.

Ryan did mention that he'd won at every other track except Hangtown.

Afterward, the guy made a point of coming over to talk to Ryan and mentioned that there was no disrespect intended. I chimed in that I'd asked Ryan plenty of questions that probably came out the wrong way. Ryan laughed. Smile

In the 13-14 years that I've been doing moto stuff full-time, I've also probably asked James more than a few questions that were uncomfortable for him to answer. With the exception of a time or two (where I chalked it up more to bad timing than anything else), I don't think he's ever shut me down on answering anything. The only one I can really think of was a time way back when he was riding 125s for Kawasaki, when he was out riding at Elsinore with J-Bone (who was still his mechanic at the time), and that he just wanted to have a fun day of riding.

There are plenty of ways to ask questions to get the answers you're looking for. You can throw softballs. You can throw hardballs. I try not to ask them in a way that's out-and-out dickish, which is what some people seem to want to see.

The thing is, you can always ask questions...if you can get access to a rider. Most of the time it's no problem, unless they're pissed at their performance, or injured (or both). Last year at Hangtown, Kenny was pretty scarce when he was dealing with his back injury. Afterwards, I got a chance to catch up with him to find out what was going on.

Also, whether you get an honest answer (see Cooper Webb at the Vegas pre-race press conference regarding his wrist injury) is up to the rider...and also sometimes the timing. I talked with Cooper about it again at Hangtown, and got a very different answer from the one that he gave in Vegas. Apparently he didn't want to share injury info the day before he was trying to wrap up a championship.

Heck, we asked Bud Feldkamp what the attendance was at the first USGP a few years ago, and he said 15,000. That might have been the case if they counted Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and made everyone there go through the turnstyles five or six times each.

I'm not trying to start some big holy war here. No one has gotten clipped. (Though when someone with one post comes in and tells you to watch out because you might get clipped, it's pretty apparent that he's a former customer.) But when someone keeps repeatedly telling you how things should work, or that you'll get blackballed, or have credentials pulled...and none of those things have ever happened to me or any journali...er, sports reporter that I know of, it becomes a little frustrating.

GuyB well said. IMHO, a lot of reporting now days has devolved into the combative style of the attacking journalist. Some seem to like this approach (Slowdude) and criticize when it is not used. The reality is that most of the "journalists" utilizing this method seem to do so to make the "journalist" the focus of attention as opposed to actually getting information. Think of the number of times you see it in the media and then really analyze if the interviewee actually gave any information. (Of course, this kind of leads to the question of how much of our modern "news" is actually that or is it entertainment.)

The funny thing about all this is that this entire topic begins with questioning why someone hasn't asked JS7 why he started the season in the condition the OP opines he was in. The real question to be answered is why is JS7 having the difficulties he is.
dkg, I agree.

Yep. Life in miniature. This is how the world works. This is reality. To expect anything else, especially in a small
sport as this is kinda foolish thinking IMO.

And let's get real.
It is a small sport.
TV wise, more people tune in to a rerun of a Poker match than a MX National.

If you owned a TV station, and 2 million people watched a card game, and some guy wanted to pay you
5 thousand for 3 minutes of ad time, and some other guy like DC wanted you to show a MX National that would
pull 100,000 people with a sponsor that only comes up with 700 bucks, where are you gonna go?

Furthermore, and I'm not kissin ass, this place IMO, and the guy that runs it, has become the standard in this sport.
Fair, honest and timely reporting, with the public at large voicing their feelings 24/7.

Who else is even coming close?

No, you guys might want a more TMZ kinda place, (those that were around remember how the TFS "Racetalk"
thing worked out), but are not in touch with how the real world works.

The sport is small because you numbnuts want it that way.. I mean you guys thank GuyB for giving you pictures of the races and a mx website?! That's how backwards this sport is, reality is he should be thanking us for paying our money to attend the races which give him the opportunity to travel and take pictures of those bikes. He should thank us for supporting VitalMx but that's fine I'll continue to watch second Motos next day and live my life. I mean the guy that runs the series also employs the announcer, the main publication and the main radio host!

Fuck it , time to fall in line. This sport has reached its pinnacle for growth anyway...
