He seems to love training. He is more confident the harder he trains, because in his mind if he works the hardest he will be the best.

RD is something else when it comes to fitness. I really do think he isn't training as hard as when he was on his own. He is that kind of athlete, and I actually think Aldon has been a key to not over training. Not to mention just knowing he has Aldon gives him even more confidence.

Smart training is better that hard training.

I'm not sure when he will retire but he has potential to keep this form up into his 30's due the fact he just does not crash ... It's unbelievable how he does not fall..

I thought he has hinted vaguely that he will likely retire at the end of the 2017 season. I believe his contract with KTM is up at that time. I'm sure he could re-up for another year or two with them if he wanted, but that is not what the rumors have been.

He turned pro in 2006 and has probably missed the least amount of races (percentage wise) of any pro racer ever in this sport.

Maybe you are right. I just remember hearing two more years a while back. Maybe this year is included in that. Either way he will ride off into the sunset successful on his own terms.. Wonder if he will stick around the sport as a coach or team manager or something?
I think the two more years was at the end of 2015, so 16 and 17 were the two more years.

I get the feeling he will not work in the industry. I think he will go home, raise a family and maybe piddle around helping his dad in the concrete business.

AC was 14 (he's only 19 now), KROC 18 (he's 21) and Dungey just turned 26 in Dec, so he would've been 23 or 24. RV is only 27 now! Amazing how young these "veterans" really are!

In my opinion, the guys that get Epstein Barr are guys who get injured, are immuno-compromised, or are behind the power curve and try to make up for lost time by over-training. The human body can endure a smartly executed, extremely difficult training regimen a lot better than one may think. Most people's minds will give up before their muscles.

Definetely, and by the time the others get to that point dungey will be long retired.

This is something I've been thinking about. We've heard it before that riders were stretched too thin with Aldon, be it over training or under eating, not enough muscle, or too much cardio.
Villo, KRoc, AC44. Will Ryan be a victim of the Aldon camp. Take it easy, because obviously Aldon has taken RD's mental fitness to another level and also his physical fitness. But will he burn out? People started threads last year about him looking really thin and he hasn't hit the deck hard in over two years, but will he be able to sustain the fitness and mental toughness that he's had the last two years? Just curious, we know Ryan has one of the highest work ethics in the business so will they overdo it? I believe that could be the Achilles heel to his regimen, overtraining

I think he may also be training less than in the past, but doing more race practice, which sure seems to benefit him

I wouldn't lose much sleep over it.
How far off is Dungey's comfort and confidence from McGrath? He seems pretty confident in himself to win every race and/or title he enters.

Could you see him stretching the career out even longer to go after some of the bigger records?

From what I see, I doubt it. He doesn't seem like reed or stew. He definitely seems to like racing but it's a job for him. Every interview is the same "we're going to keep
Working and keep pushing". Probably wants to win one or two more titles if he can and move on. Reed definitely seems like he would race forever if he could and he's still hungry. Ryan seems hungry but because it's his job.

To McGrath? Jeremy had a swagger and attidude that I don't think we'll ever see Ryan adopt.

I also think the depth of the field is a lot deeper now than in MC's day.

I'm not sure what Ryan's long-range plans are. But winning at the percentages that he's accomplishing sure don't suck. Seems like it'd be harder on everyone else than him.

I wouldn't say a lot deeper. Here's San Diego 99. Pretty deep field. I'm counting 11 riders who had at least one main event win under their belt. RC would make it 12 but he didn't have one yet.

15 former champions out of 22 riders. A little more stacked than 11 previous winners wouldn't you say?

Where are you getting 16 ? Are you counting regional SX titles ? And I didn't say it was more stacked then just comparable.

I counted 250 titles as well yes, and I think it's actually 15.

And on second thought, while running through these names I would have to agree with you. Some of these former champions are getting lapped now.

All good. I just see dunge as being at such a peak right now you have to wonder what will be the tipping point at the top and how long they can sustain the dominance. They obviously are working about as good as a team could work right now. I was listening to PulpMx and they talk about how all
These 250 guys get Epstein Barr and over train and if there was one thing that could throw a stick in dungeys wheel I think overtraining could be it. Doesn't seem like many riders can sustain the Aldon camp forever.

Right, but the majority of 250 riders (nearly everyone not named Davalos) are in their late teens to early 20s when they start those brutal regimens. I for one think that the human body (for most normal people) can't sustain that level of training at that age.

I mean, I'm no exercise physiologist, but look at damn near any endurance sport. Dudes in the late 20s and early 30s dominate those sports. Obviously MX is different, but the human body isn't.

AC was how old when he started with Aldon? Like 18? KRoc was like 20-21. Dungey was 25 I believe.
For the record 58 year old Tinker Juarez just won perhaps the most coveted endurance mtb race in the US(sea otter classic) with none other than johnny o finishing 2nd.

The burn out comes from worrying about losing.
If he can be ok with not winning everything he won't get burnt out....so only time will tell.

I'm wondering if I'm the only one that doesn't know that much details about Aldons program. I mean, what do we know...

I would if I was him! If he can win a couple more titles and get out healthy and wealthy! Great way to end it. he is pretty much already one of the top five best racers ever!

Very stacked field. Choose your top 5 most talented out of both lists. Put them side by side. It's pretty damn arguable about who had the toughest comp. The talent levels then and now are on parr. Throw all them guys from 99 on powerful easy to ride 450's and get them personal trainers and they would have went much faster. Only difference from now is the scrub techniques. But still MC beat the shit out of very high talent. Shit until RC the damn GOAT got his training shit in gear, Mc could walk that little chunky cheeto around a supercross track all day! Laughing

16 former champs above counting 250/450 MX/SX titles: 21, 5(1), 3, 94, 22, 41, 18, 15, 20, 12, 19, 25, 51, 54, 377, 7.
Regardless, it is a stacked field, but that isn't to say all are competitive for wins on any given Saturday. There is something keeping a few of these guys from being 450 SX contenders, and it is likely a combination of work ethic, luck and most importantly, confidence. Make no mistake about it; all of the dudes listed above are bad dudes on an MX bike and would blow your minds at any local race. They are just surrounded by real fast company.
