Sheesh...just because I PERSONALLY don't like the tats and peircings and wannabe bad ass attitude/image it portrays in professional MX, I'm a "dick hole" and a bad parent...wow! Come on people, I can have an opinion different than yours on the subject...

And I didn't say Grant was a bad person...I believe I said "wanna be" about a million times in this thread ("wanna be" means he's not, but wants people to think he is)...I just said I don't like his image, and think it isn't going to help attract corporate america sponsors that aren't looking at the demographic that that appeals too (and that is most of corporate america). Yes, there are corporate america sponsors that are interested in that image...but there are far more corporate america sponsors that aren't. And that's the important part of my point.

And since it seems most on here think MX "needs" all types of images in the sport, then you also have to admit that it also needs fans that look for all types of images. And I hate to say it to you all, but there are FAR more people in this country that look for and respect the clean cut image than that don't. That is a no brainer. So if you all "wanna hate on me" because I'm one of the majority that just plain doesn't appreciate the wanna be bad ass image, then I guess I'm in good company. But go ahead an alienate people like me from the sport and see what happens to it.

There are more companies in corporate america that don't arent' looking for that image than that do.

There are more people in america that don't appreciate/like that image than that do.

So if MX wants to grow and truly become "mainstream", the stars of the sport-and the image of the sport in general-are going to have to appeal to the widest range of corporate america companies and the widest range of the american public as possible.

And since most people in the country, and most of corporate america DON'T want/like/appreicate that image...if MX wants to grow and become "mainstream" then the "wanna be bad ass" image isn't he way to go.

MX already has huge obsticals (that other sports don't have) it has to overcome before it can become "mainstream", and that image isn't speeding the process up at all.

Oh, and about Denny...he's getting his ass kissed right now like every other industry name gets (it's sad really)....nothing more nothing less. And yeah, he knows more about the subject than I do...but he gets paid to do that shit, he's SUPPOSED TOO.

But patting him on the back and him celebrating that he knows more about it than me is like Kobe Bryant going down to the local LA highschool and playing point gaurd in a game and then celebrating every time he scores a point like it's the NBA finals...and then his "hangers on" patting him on the back because he's better than the high school kids. It's just stupid. He's Kobe Bryant, he's supposed to be better than the kids on the high school team

And that brings up another pet peeve of mine...industry people posting on the message boards....why would they do that? It's just as stupid as Kobe going down and playing in a high school game...and I've already elaborated the huge down side...so I won't do it again. I'd just prefer if industry people left the message boards to the normal folk. But then again, most are ex-racers that at one time were having people kiss there asses all day...and since their out of the spotlight, they'll take any chance they can get to have their asses kissed again (can't say I blame them, I know I'd do the same thing)...anyway, the less industry folks on the message boards the better, IN MY OPINION.

Oh, and for the record, brother-in-law almost has his entire torso (back, chest, and stomach) covered in Tats...so, it's not like I'm inherently predjudice against people with tats...I just don't think it's the image MX should market IF the industry wants to become mainstream (if it wants to appeal to the broadest popluation/company base in America).
Titan-

You truly are a piece of work. Congrats.

I truly don't think you kow what mainstream America knows or what corporate America wants from what you have posted. I would even go as far as saying if you lined up a bunch of execs from any corporations you choose and ask them if they know Ricky Carmichael, James Stewart or Brian Deegan. I am willing to bet Deegan is probably MORE popular amongst them.

Why is RC doing as much X games as he can? James is doing it this year and essentialy all the riders want into it. That image, the "X-gamer" image is huge. Try going to L.A. this summer and see how corporate america the tattoo, flat bill, black wearing socks crowd is. I think you would be surprised. That one event gets more corporate America interest than you can imagine, and Brian Deegan is the "GOAT" there.

I get a chuckle out of your explanations and what you are pretty much saying - "I know Denny knows what he is talking about he gets paid to do it, but listen to me because my opinion is mine and it's not wrong you are just all ass kisser for believing the guy that does this for a living, the Mulisha is stupid, leave the message boards to us non industry people so we can have our own opinions that we can prove ourselves right without the help of truth!" Meanwhile the Mulisha is laughing all the way to the bank, while our poor privateers are going to the bank's too- but they are going to get loans for entry fees and fuel. Someones doing somehthing right with tattoos and flat hats!

Trust me, I bleed MX and I used to be a hater too, I lnow where you're coming from, but facts are facts. Brian Deegan is a smart man that made a decision to leave MX/SX where he made peanuts and created the image he has now with millions in the bank and corporate america swinging from his nuts. Pretty smart business man if you ask me.

I'm arguing my opinion...that's what we do on this board...argue our opinions...if we didn't, there'd be no need for message boards.

If Denny wants to tell us all about what sponsors the riders/athletes have, have had in the past, or will have in the future...great...let him do it and nobody will be able to argue contrary (those are facts and he's the expert). But there is no "set in stone" "right way" path to mainstream acceptance (if there was we'd already be there...and nobody could argue it), there are only opinions on what direction the sport should go to get there. so he has his opinion, I have mine. I have facts that support my opinion, he has facts that support his. The essence of a debate.

And just because he's industry, doesn't mean I can't question or argue with him either (and you said the same thing in regards to Larry)...industry folks don't "know all" or are above questioning. They say stuff, they "may get called on what [they] say" (as you said).

Unfortunately for me, I'm arguing with an "industry insider" so of course all the ass kisser are going to take his side (so I don't have public opinion on my side, and it's public opinion, more than anything, that is making me look bad here).

If you take all the garbage out of the debate and look at the facts presented, it's pretty even in my opinion...

You use a lot of inflammatory language in your posts. I imagine you are probably running an elevated heart rate and blood pressure in this debate.

You got shot down pretty clearly when you said corporations don't want to sponsor Mulisha types and Denny corrected you on that.

But, you didn't stop there. You let the "lickers" upset you and got all sarcastic. "Mr. Insider" and all that crap.

And what's your specific beef with the Mulisha. Not what you think their effect is. What do you dislike about them? I have my issues with some of the stuff, but, I've watched Deegan since '97 and he's not just some punk who can ride a dirt bike.

I think I may have missed the "facts" part of your arguement. Is it because Nike sponsored JS, and RD?? Gawd i hope that's not what you based your whole arguement on...

Dude, I have no idea where you're getting the "elevated heart rate and blood pressure" thing...this board is absolutely meaningless to me, and not worth getting upset over. I'm really not sure what "inflammator language" you're referring to..."ass kisser'? "mr insider"? what?

Let me start over...yes, there are corporations that want to go after the demographic that likes the deegan image. I'm not denying that. Energy Drink companies, DC shoes, Kicker etc...all corporations...all target the same demographic that will be a fan of that image.

But there are far MORE, and far larger, corporations that would prefer to have clean cut athletes representing them.

And if MX wants to grow the most and the fastest, would it not be to their best interest to market an image that would appeal to the largest number, and most lucrative companies in the country? Yes, it would.

And since there are more companies that would prefer to be represented by clean cut athletes wouldn't it be more beneficial for mx to market it's image as clean cut?

That is what I'm saying...

MX is relatively small right now because the stereotype of the average "mxer" is what deegan is. And so the only companies paying attention to it-at the moment-are companies whose target demographic is that very small group of people that like what deegan is.

In order for MX to get bigger than it currently is, it needs-among other things (better tv packages for example)-to appeal to a broader fan base so that the new corporations (whose target demo isn't what deegan is) will see their demographic sitting in the stands at a sx or riding mx bikes and will see a potential ROI by investing capital into the sport.

The only way that will happen is if mx can market its clean cut athletes as a way of shedding that "deegan" stereotype. Then a broader fan base will get into the sport, once that happens more companies will want to advertise within the sport and the sport grows.

Do you see what I'm saying?

And the reason I'm aganst the mulisha is because I get so sick and tired of people automatically assuming thats what I am when they hear I'm an MX racer....I kid you not, there was a girl in high school whose parents forbid her to see me (before meeting me) because they knew I raced moto (I'm the cleanest cut kid you'd ever know)...once meeting me, they changed their tune quickly. Another time in high school, a friend of mine (not into moto) was trying to getme hired on a place he worked at retail store...but he told his boss I was an mx racer, and he almost wouldn't interview me...he thought I was what deegan is (that stereotype again).

I do not like that stereotype....that's why I don't like the mulisha, or FMX in general, or the "thug life" athletes representing the sport. Obviously that is my personal opinion.

"But there are far MORE, and far larger, corporations that would prefer to have clean cut athletes representing them."

is this fact or speculation? Because in all the YEARS Mx and SX has been around it took the "Mulisha" type to attract any corporate sponsors and that has only happened since X-games and Freestyle MX.

Target? Yeah they sponsor Dungey. But they sponsored Nate Adams first in Freestyle and he has a sleeve and a tat across his hole side.

I think corporate America is stumbling across SX and Mx now that Freestyle and people like the Mulisha got their attention.

Whatever, we all get your point and a lot of us think you'r pretty wrong. Just sayin'

X-games is on TV a gazillion times...that's the ONLY reason corporate America is interested. And.. MX was only a tiny part of the Xgames. Skateboarding and BMX were the main reasons the Xgames took off as it did. That and ESPN's airing and promoting of it.

I think you're dead wrong on Deegan being more popular than RC and JS with them too. Of course, those are each of our opinions, who really knows.

There is no doubt that Mulisha is successful and Deegan did the smart thing. He def. didn't have a future in racing, so again, smart move going to something he could market himself and make a living at. Heck, I give him credit for helping get FMX off the charts.. but the most credit would be given to Travis Pastrana, IMO for taking it to the heights it has reached.

As far as what I think of the Mulisha.. they're a circus show, a very successful one at that.

Who can make a judgement on the riders themselves? Not me.. don't know any of em. They could all be choir boys for all I know.... but their IMAGE is not something I'd have my kids aspire to want to be like. Others will differ, that's cool too.

I do however tend to agree, that the majority will choose the more "clean cut" type of person to admire and totally understand what Titan is trying to get across.

Forgot to actually be on topic here... I love watching JG ride and am actually rooting for him to win. And..if he were on my team, I'd politely ask him to kill the extra goofiness on the podium. That's just me though.

.i have a question tho seriously ..no smart ass here.i been pondering this for a lil while.how would bringing in all these major new squeeky clean corporate companys benifitt the sport of moto? like would it just be salary wise?and for the riders/industry?or would it bring sometype of justification to the sport to be "mainstream" like recognition to the riders?.. or like more tv coverage and spectators?.what are we headin for?.im from so cal and every moto event i go to is paked if not sold out,,so when i hear mainstream i picture a bunch of johnny come latley "die hard " fans..i kinda noticed this in the nascar boom a few years ago..

Wait, I think I've seen a thread like this before... you know, the type where a buffoon makes a claim of "fact" (but of course offers no hard evidence other than anecdotal), is properly caned by someone with actual experience in the matter... yet the buffoon continues to maintain the same pose of "I'm right." Kind of seems like they have a basic reading comprehension issue, but in "fact" it's just that they purposely ignore any information that dispels their argument. This is the type of thread that will piss on for days.

I'm left wondering if Titan's 2300 other posts are of the same high quality...

Jeremy was as squeeky clean as pastrana in public...

Wasn't the blue hair a bet he lost with his mechanic?

And I follow this sport as close as most (and have since the 90's) and I didn't even know Jeremy had any tattoos (and he certainly doesn't have a sleeve)...so I highly doubt the casual fan would've known about the tats or the piercings. And a tattoo is far different than a sleeve...just sayin'...

(I did know about the nipple rings but only because I owned that "FLY" video Fox made in like 95-96 or whatever...awesome video by the way...it showed Jeremy wakeboarding on "I think" canyon lake down in CA...and had bradshaw, dowd, henry, MC, lamson riding at glamis, cool honda test track footage...I need to watch it again...)

Anyway, the point is, the "image" jeremy portrayed in public was squeeky clean...what he was/is in private is completely different and irrelevant when it comes to representing a company in public.

I think the industry in general would be better served, in terms of growth, by marketing it's athletes as clean cut, hard working, professionals (rather than thugs) as that will appeal to the broadest population base and thus the widest range of corporate sponsors...anyway, my opinion.

Yo Titan, so if we disagree with you, does that automatically make us an "industry kiss ass"?

Seems like you're "painting with a pretty large brush".

Remember, the kid is from Riverside, CA.......the "909". He didn't grow up in Ogden, Utah.

JG is a really cool guy, well spoken up on the podium, is physically fit, has a good team, has a bunch of corporate sponsors, and can ride the wheels off of a dirt bike.

Who cares how he looks or wears his hat!

This thread is like a bad interstate crash, it's terrible but you have to look.

This is pretty old news, happened a couple monhs ago. Talk about mainstream America, Deegan was on TMZ when this happened.

I wonder if James Stewart got into a bar fight if a hollywood gossip TV show or mag like TMZ would mention it?

I'm not saying it is cool, just pointing out that mainstream america took note.

Another thing, nobody here knows the story behind what happened so I wouldn't be too quick to jump on the Deegan is a thug because he got arrested after a fight band wagon. It wasn't like he walked into a bar with his shirt off looking for a fight, but sometimes when you portray yourself as a tough guy people want to test your toughness.

Man all this stuff about Josh, well... and Brain. No need to bring in all the personal stuff. I just wanted to say I love you Josh and it was a great ride for you last week. Looked like you were having funSmile If people knew who you are and what the tats represent they probably wouldn't say much. I think they are awesome. JMO Oh... and Denny, thanks for getting Josh's back !

Personally I would rather have our young men acting/looking gangsta than being gangsters.

This topic has been beaten to death, but since this is Vital, why stop there?? Looking at Sports Illustraded from July 6 2009 it has how many endorsements the top athletes have.
Tiger Wood...............92

Phil Mickelson..........46.6

LeBron James.........28

Shaq..........................15

Peyton Manning.......13

Kevin Garnett...........10

Kobe Bryant..............10

Allen Iverson.............7

Jeter..........................8.5

A Rod........................6

Titan, you may want to rethink your opinion on what Corperate America wants.
Companies spending money on advertising don't seem to care if they have tats or not. Seems to be more about how marketable the athlete is, tats, black socks, or a Yankee hat, if you are good, companies will want you no matter what you dress or act like.

You can have your opinion, but you can make a better arguement if you actually had some numbers to support your theory of what companies are looking for.

Hey, I thought J-Law wasn't racing the rest of the year?
