Those are both 76's.

There was a 75 1/2 that had internal springs/bare fork tubes, but the frame was different at the shock mounts.

These are both definitely AW's (1976)

I think the first year radials and the 76-77's are the nicest for my tastes.

The 74's also have two versions. My 74 has the early shock mount where the 74.5 have the more forward shocks. Here is the 74.5

The 81 490 did me well last weekend at the AHRMA Vintage National at ACP....won the 40+, 50+ and Ultima Expert classes. Back to back motos, too! That bike was awesome....

In fact, I think I'll ride it at the AZ OT's International in a few weeks....
That would be cool! Try to get Don Adams out there with his and I see if Ed Z is going to race.

I have ridden all the Maicos. straight line stability is great power is not up to par with say a CR500 but its OK more for a rough track bike built for avoiding the killer whoops or slicing under a rought turn. Just something to think about?

I loved my 79' 450 Magnum. I got it from Dale Lewis. It was the best bike I ever had at that time. It's the first bike I won a race on. This me in my profile photo smoking the Japanesse bikes at Ascot. (Photo by Mitch Freidman)

I thought the '80 was called the Alpha 440. My buddy had one and had problems with the front brake anchor arm, he kept snapping them.

78 was Magnum

79 was Magnum 2

80 was originally mistakenly called Magnum 3 in MXA, but it was officially Mega

81 was Mega 2

82 was Alpha 1 (first linkage single-shock Maico)

83 was called Spider.

I thought they were sexy as hell, gullwing triple clamps, larger diameter forks, basically a new design. Thanks for the clarification.

I have a complete 78 250 Magnum and I am acquiring parts to build a 1980 Mega.

I have basically a complete chassis with forks and wheels + plastic including tank.

Need to get a seat and a motor to finish it. Want to do a 440 (450) open bike.
