I was told that Red Bull hired the X Games track builder to construct the exact same track a few weeks earlier. Only a few were allowed to ride it. I was told those select girls busted the triples and ramps on the second lap or so.
I'm not trying to take anything away from them as they kicked some serious ass, and I don't care if they had a practice SX track for months before or not...you cannot learn to ride SX like that without A LOT of talent. Those girls rocked it.
What confused me is, on an outdoor track I can usually run the pace of the girls who win the Nats, but that was not the case at X. When I started asking questions that was the answer I got. Is it true? I dunno! I was on bone stock suspension which didn't help.
I was scared to triple so I didn't do it. If it meant winning or losing, I would have certainly attempted it. The finish line jump was plenty big enough for me. Next year I will bring my A (sx) game.
Not sure if I am allowed to confirm this or not. What I can say for sure is that, yes 2 of them had a private track to practice on. 1 of those 2 didn't race. The track was close to the same but not exactly the same. The truth is though they they didn't get to see or ride the track until the monday after Washougal. That gave them 3 days to practice on it. 1 of the other girls had another SX style track to practice on too. Again it was not the same but it was none the less a SX track and it had no Steel ramp. She rode it for 1 week prior to the event.
The other 7 girls never rode a SX track at all. Unless you call Comp Park a SX track.
So to answer your question. No. Not one of them rode a SX track for a month strait to practice.
The difference I think with the Nats is that their corner speed is not as fast as the top boy and all the jumps are doable to top skill level riders. The girls can jump and I almost feel that SX fits their riding style more than MX.
Hope that helps.
The only ex Pro that could run with these girls today was probably Lisa Akin.
They were fast for their time...but, I could hang with both of them. I have been on the track with the following women.
Abrianna Dunn, Marianna Balbi, Tatum Sik, Sheri Cruise, Meika Cornelius, Vanessa Florentino, Sarah Whitmore, and (my fav) Katie McGuire...They killed me !
However, I think I could hang, or beat them, in a Desert race.
