1978 National #72 - Who was he ?

Randy was a a San Diego area racer and like many of the privateers would wear their CMC numbered jersey in practice at the nationals and the fans would always say who is #5 or hey that isn't Tripes. And the CMC riders would just grin and not say a word.

How did you end up in Brundidge? Did you or do you Know Furman Gray?

Don't know Furman, but the next town above Brundidge is Troy, where Audie Ward has a motorcycle shop. I ended up down here when I married a lady from here, to bad that didn't last.

Guys,

For sure that is Randy Hess and his Dad's name was John, who unfortunately passed away a few years back. Randy still lives in El Cajon, just got married, and still rides. He rode for DG and FMF and was at one time CMC #5 and AMA National #127 and 72. I was his mechanic for several years, and he was the first rider that I know of named "Holeshot Hess" by Motocross Action Magazine. I seriously think one year on the national circuit he got at least 1 holeshot every national, and at the opener at Hangtown (the first Praire City race, he holeshotted his qualifier and both mains. There were cool rivalries between San Diego area riders and LA area riders, we had Randy, Broc, Marty Smith, Tripes, Lechien, Ricky Johnson, Burnworth, Huges, Craig, against all the dudes from up north. I was digging life racing against those guys, and since I had no money to race the national circuit, CMC was the next best thing!

Don't forget Steve Rhyan from San Clemente raced nationals for several years and won the 500cc Pro Golden State title in 1980.

If you said he was a NorCal guy, I might of said Brian Jodry cause he rode RM's. Didn't he win like the support class when Ellis won the main on the Can Am in L.A. SX in 1976? I was there, but don't remember, but know Brian was up front or towards the front. I would've said Phil Crane too and seemed Magoo got off that 250 KTM and went to the 125 class on a Suzuki after Hangtown or it may have been 1977 season when Wardy did his first on ths RM and Magoo was also on the RM. Waay cool mind stimulation.

I know Dan Turner was #39 when he had that factory Yam ride. Dave Eropkin was a SoCallie.

One of the old North Dirt Diggers asked who won the most motos as an expert AND Pro during his career. Anyone know? He gave me the answer he says he knows it was, but said he won over 700 expert/Pro motos. Any takers.
