Looks like '83. I think he went Team Honda in '84.

Sorry Guys, 1983 was the year the Ron rode for Yamaha with #224. Rookie season by the way.

In 1984 he signed with Honda and rode the RC250.

I'm usually the one that's a second late.

I remembered '83 because I saw him running the #224 Factory Yammie 125 at Whitney that year. He won that race as a Rookie.

How many Nationals did he win that year? Seems like he was real young also. The 83 yz 250 was a bad ride, may be my favorite all time bike out of the 30 or so I have owned.

I saw RL wax the field at the Orlando SX in "83. And that is a works Yamaha in that photo, not a production "K" model. Difference is the right hand pipe location, the works forks, and the works swingarm. I believe that was Lechein's first SX win in Orlando.

Saw him wax the field at SD SX on a store bought YZ250, something went a little crazy between Yamaha and RL at the end of the season?
Fill me in with what happened to RL.[/quote:9ec8b]

Got involved with drugs. Went to jail. Now works at his dad's company (Maxima) and races occasionally in the old farts' class. He still hauls the mail pretty good, but he weighs about 3 times what he did in these pictures!

Wasn't 1983 the year that Yamaha wouldn't give him a bike after he signed with Honda? I seem to remember he won the San Diego SX on a stock Yamaha (still contractually obligated to ride a YZ.)

I saw 'The Dogger' smoke the entire Pro class O'Show-style on a factory YZ125 at a CMC Golden State series race at Sad in '83...he even put it on the 500 Pros (Pete Snorteland won the 500s that day). Too bad he could not garner a championship in those days, but RJ was just too dominant.

I have that race on tape. Wardy broke a chain and Bailey was wearing camo pants.

Ron raced an '84 L model prepped by Bevo at San Diego. He pulled the holeshot but was running out of steam towards the end. Any pics of him on the '83 bologna cutter.(Rotary valve 125)

Actually Elsinore - Bryan was always 'Flyin Bryan' when he was younger but I wasn't around later in his career. Ronny was always 'Lechien the Machine' to me (and Larry Huffman, plus several other announcers) even though he was known as 'Dogger' later on.
"The Machine" was Bryan Myerscough. Lechien was "The Dogger." But I digress...carry on.[/quote:ab0aa]
Machine was Lechien, Flyin Brian Myerscough is the way I remember it too.
