Look for forerunner on ebay, so many good versions, I had 305, now 610. New to refurbished for $50-$100. Older 405 works as well. just seek after GPS, forerunner. I'm pretty sure u can get an amazing watch for $60 including shipping to your door. Good thing is they create lap times without pressing the button each lap. And u can get so much data it's crazy.
Really been considering the 610. When doing lap times does it measure tenths of the second for each lap recorded? I'm not sure but I think I seen somewhere it doesn't. Just wanting to confirm since you actually own the watch. Would suck to be averaging say 2:01 and then turn a 1:59.9 but have it just show "1:59" and think your last lap was 2 seconds faster when in reality it was only 1.1Grinning

I use my Garmin Edge 500 from my mountainbike. They make a wristband for it, and several bar mounts. It tracks everything, distance, speed, elevation, duration, HR and calories. It also lays out your ride on a map for review. You can set it to use the GPS to time your laps so every time you pass start/finish it marks a lap. I have been eyeing those Vivofit watches to see if they do everything my Edge 500 does, I would get one.
how is the battery life on the garmin edge 500?

Very late answer, but I had some issues finding out since I have't been riding that much after I bought it, and it was difficult to find out in contrast to my 305 which had a different set up and I took time to figure that one out.

In the watch, lap times will only be seen in seconds, on the internet "Garmin connect" where you sync the watch, it seems you can get tenths of second... BUT it's irrelevant since the GPS isn't that accurate, it's a +-5 meter deal, so you will not get the truth with 1/10 anyway.

For us mortals maybe it doesn't really matter? It differs between seconds whatever we measure? Top guy run 10-20 seconds faster and we are erratic on a two minute lap. I did some riding this weekend, and my best lap ever on a certain track is 2:15, and today it got that time as well which means I know I'm within my limit. Say we do better, we get seconds, not tenth of a second?

Seems Polar, Suunto also have 1 second precision.

suunto ambit 3 peak or sport version. suunto traverse will do as well if you are willing to pay more for better looks. they are made in finland and high quality products.
Old thread. You still have the Ambit3? I'm totally confused how to set it up for doing lap times on track...

I have a Polar M400; not as fancy as the 430, but does a lot for a price at $150, including a heart rate strap. You can set distances for automatic laps if you're tying to keep lap times, or you could just focus on a training time (say 15 min + 1 or whatever).

GPS on mine has been pretty dead on, though at times I've had where it cuts out for a split second or two, then seems to pick up without anymore issues. Holds charge decently well; Polar flow app has lots of information to sync from the watch, and all can be done through bluetooth.

Just leave Suunto and Polar to shop. Garmin can give you real laptimes By position.

I have a Garmin Forerunner 610. Very nice watch and user friendly, but the precision, accuracy of the GPS is sub pair, hence the whole point with everything else gets lost. The Suunto on the other hand has a very good GPS, but is less user friendly for me, and seems to be lacking the function to mark a spot, and then use it as a lap marker. That is so stupid, since it's just a matter of software?

Polar M400 seems nice, but the test I read it also had poor GPS reading? But maybe the test was wrong. If anything Polar, I would go for the v800 (pricey as hell) for me needs? Suunto Ambit3 and the v800 has similar GPS values, and .

It can be a factor of what track, and where. Trees etc. If you have a very good open space, maybe they are all good. My track might be a bit hidden. I get difference of hundreds of meters every lap, despite my riding being very single lined.

I have contacted Suunto. See if they reply. I just called them, and it was a no on this function. So off we go with the watch. Sad Should have done some more reading before buying this one...

That one doesn't have GPS. Seems to be using your phone GPS?
