Synthetic ACL's aren't new; you can still get one in the states if you can find a Doctor that believes in the technology. Heck, there are reports of docs trying to use steel braided wire in the 1800's... Can you imagine?!

Unfortunately, nothing yet beats natural tissue -- whether it be your own or a donor graft. Most Ortho surgeons would strongly advise against synthetic grafts... So I hope that's not what he's doing!
The problem with previous synthetic grafts was that they where to strong. Matt Hoffman mentions this is his book where his graft pulled out at the plugs. The LARS ligament is the new generation of synthetic replacements. Long story short the problem with the old generation was in the weave. Two many braids made for very little give, reduce the amount of braiding and you increase the amount of give.

What makes the LARS ligament unique is that you can return to activity in days not months. Which in the case of Dean could mean the difference between staying employed or having to apply for a job on team Tedder.

Long term studies are still pending and the studies that are out there where poorly designed.

I make this statement to all my patients and to everyone who reads this PAY ATTENTION.

The MOST common cause of an INJURY is a PREVIOUS injury. Chew on that for awhile.

1. Riders fail to complete rehabilitation. The minute they can throw a leg over the bike or twist the throttle rehab is done.
2. Riders get suckered into seeing QUACKS that state they can cut rehab in 1/2 by using MAGIC boxes or pills that nobody else has.
3. Riders follow SHITTY training programs that fail to address musculoskeletal weaknesses, mobility/stability issues and the basic core principles of programing.

The world has some pretty cool medical knowledge. Sometimes hands are tied in America on the ability to adopt it, test it and use it.
Healthcare is a business in America, thats our major issue.

Good luck Deano, your 150 ride in Premix made me a fan.
Everything is business in USA.

He must have a doctor over there he really likes.
Probably Dr. Toon Claes. He's the same doctor who operated Everts' damaged knee in '99 and almost every other motocrosser in the GP-scene who's got a major injury. In fact, a lot of Belgian athletes from various kinds of sports go to see this doctor.

This makes me laugh. Do you think the people who developed and market the LARS are a charity? Do you think when these pro athletes head to Europe for surgery they are using the countries universal healthcare system, or that their exclusive doctors and the private clinics they go to are not cash/private insurance only? Where do you think most of the largest and most profitable pharmaceutical companies are located? Or do you just not think?

What are some exercises that improve musculoskeletal weakness and mobility/stability issues? The latter sounds like core workouts, yoga and general stretching would help. Is that what you're talking about?

Got an appointment with his son (Steven Claes) next month for my knee.

Dr Steven Claes (son of Toon) and Professor Dr Johan Bellemans did ground breaking research back in 2013 about an new ligament called ALL. Thats probably why a lot of sportsmen are going to Belgium to get surgery. We're on the top of the world.

Surgeons describe new ligament in the human knee.

The most ideal would be that he would stay in Belgium to do his rehabilitation too. Because with David Bombeke, known from dealing with Cadel Evans and other sportsmen, and Lieven de Maesschalck known from working with AC Milaan, Stefan Everts, Johan Museeuw and others we've also two of the greatest living in our little country.
