Fork Oil Change

Edited Date/Time 1/22/2016 4:24pm
Hi Guys,

I have a kx250 with Kayaba AOSS forks.

I have just ordered some new stiffer fork springs for them, watched some youtube videos and they look simple enough to change. Dry

My question is, i thought about changing the fork oil out at the same time, would it just be a case of tipping the fork leg upside down so all the old oil comes out then refilling it to the correct amount as per the user manual?

Thanks.

Are you removing the forks for a spring change?

If you do, yes just tip them. I usually take the fork caps off, use tie downs to pull the bottom of the forks all the way up, remove the springs and set the level. Turkey baster works great for drawing fluid out. You have to do this anyway to set the level.

You have to drain the oil and remove the entire cartridge to change the springs on those forks. Twin chamber forks have the spring at the bottom so you can't just remove the fork cap to replace the springs. You will also refill with a specific volume of oil as you can't set the height with a fork level gauge.

Yh, i have just found this out when watching a youtube video Sad . Looks like it could go very wrong...

A local suspension shop said they will change the springs and oil for me for half an hours labor, so may save my self the hassle and get them to do it.

Changing the outer chamber oil and springs is an incredibly easy job. Really something you should learn to do if you plan on riding for any length of time.

So would i not need to change the inner chamber oil? as that's the main thing which is concerning me to be honest?

If you end up doing this, see if you can watch them do it. That way next time maybe you will feel okay about doing it your self.
