sorry you dint see a 500AF at mammouth, its a great place for that bike..
and we have had guys win thier respective classes there in recent years..
they may not have been top pros, but certainlty faster than on their xr80s?
Baileys son was supposed to ride this years mammouth on one,,but ended up not making the race.... certainly not bike related. as he was really stoked about getting a chance to race it there.
the image of albertyn an richie owens was this year at GH,
sorry that so 80's
the rest of the riders mentioned where all on the bike last year ,or in recent years.
not sure your point again,,
top pros are normally factory sponsored riders.
or satilite team sponsored riders.
of course they ride what they are contracted to ride?
and in the AMA nats, there hasnt been a class for 500AF's recently,
if a class was there, i'm pretty sure you would see some guys on them..
and of course most people ride a mainstream bike.
so at any given riding area youll be likely to see mostly 250s and 450s.. ??
A1? yeah im doubting the AMA will have anyone ride one..since there isnt a class for it.
never said youd see a million guys lining up on them,,and neither was anyone else here?
you stated you laugh at the local guys youve seen on one ,,
i just mentioned maybe you hadnt seen the right guys at your local tracks.
i certainly have, and at your *local* tracks
is gorman close enough?
as far as my local tracks?
since i'm originally from socal.. i dont what you're getting at?
if interested in riding near lowell indiana..
i've lived both regions, and can say we probably have better tracks than around thousand oaks cali..we just dont have the weather bro..
Red Buds about an hour and 15 minutes..
motoland.com
byron illinois
LTM illinois
Walnut illinois.
and about another 15 tracks in my area
not to mention a ton of private tracks within 15 minutes.
no shortage of moto... just a shotrtage of balmy weather..
I've blown enough smoke out of my ass......really i could give a shit, have fun on your Af500
I'll take my shitty California tracks anyday.
I really was curious where other tracks are in your state.
going cross country and bringing my bike this spring.
thousand Oaks......ever heard of Muntz, Corriganville, Hondaland ?
(and hope on the couple thousand of them i've made, that those riders have fun as well
on thousand oaks area tracks..
i mentioned i lived in socal long term,..so yeah,
know most of the socal mx haunts..
and certainly never said they were shitty?
i like GH (when the pro track is open) amago and cahillia,,
as well as some others.
just mentioed there are very good ,and often better tracks, other places..as well.
if interested in local tracks in this area (basically chicago)
i put up just a few
and most are decent driving distance from the chicagoland area,
obviuosly red buds a hit..for most riders. (its crowded practice days though)
motoland is well known in this area (motoland.com)
log road ,mich,
dutch sport, mich.
aztalan wisc
byron ilinois (motobyron.com)
walnut illinois (sunset ridge)
Buffalo range , ottawa illinois
mendota illnios (SX track)
joliet IL (SX track)
lincoln trail motosports casey linois
south fork mx near springfield illinios
crossroads MX salem illinois
coal valley illinios ( fun track ,nice mix of SX and outdoor terrain)
way too many to list actualy..
if traveling thru,, and looking for areas in illinois you can look here>>
www.amadistrict17.com
but its certainly not a complete listing of tracks,,as there are other districts (15,16 and 18) in the area, and other riding areas and tracks not listed at all there ,
that are good places to ride.
The Shop

Luxon 4-Post Bar Mounts
$189.95 - $239.95
Walnut Ridge, Byron's Nuclear Series, Archview (STL), Euro (STL), are all really sweet though.
Also, don't forget about Keithsburg, IL, all sand track open for practice I believe.
yeap i like keithsburg..
used to race MX there ,, and do thier frozen toe HS they ran in feb..for fun ..lol
On south fork, they came to my district17 meeting just a couple weeks ago
and signed up for this year as a D17 club/promotor.
so i'm assumimng they plan to run events ,and be open for practice days..
I wouldnt count them out.
Walnuts one of my fav tracks..
but as D17 pres, i cant get too attached to any certain place or track!
havnt been to archview or euro..
havnt got down that way since otterville had a track !!
just too many places closer for me,, though i'd like to try those out as well !
to get back to the point of it,
jtom, stating what many have come to know about "service". hell i got talked out of my Maico in 1995 after being a die hard maico dude from 1978-1995, haven't got off a SH bike since.
no matter who rides what, most all who do ride a SH A/F 500 pretty much like it and or at least then understand what it's purpose in life is.
be cool to see it allowed in the outdoor national 450 class, I think some riders would choose the machine and do well on it. of course that is just an old motocrossers opinion.
and by the way, "keithsburg" i have a whole different opinion on that place!!!!
anyone looking for "places to ride" check that district 17 web site, then also check the bottom of that site's home page, It has direct links to all the districts in the midwest region 3.....those sites have all thier tracks also.
we in the middle may not be as popular as the "left" coast but we have a boat load of tracks and places to ride. problem with like a week like this week, temps 5 below to today 28 and 8 inches of snow. makes for great racing in the spring though............
the same homologation rule for the pros is pretty much the same for Amatuer. ( i think)
but OEM's would likely bitch like hell the first time at a national, when a A/F pulls a few holeshots and does a top ten a few times. if that happened they would likley move to shut it off......... nobody is saying they would allow the bike anyway......... regardless of some of the thoughts, the A/F 500 in the 450 class would be making a statement that the OE's wouldn't like........ we can just hope, as it be cool to see today what would happen with that class set up.
what is the class cc limit for the 450 class anyway for a two stroke 250??
I had an 87' CR500 dune bike....the last of the old 500's that had a powerband like a 125. It was always a trip to let people ride it....tell them to lug it into 5th gear, sit on the tank, and then roll the throttle to the stop. With a paddle tire, there was no stopping the torque wheelie as you went from 20mph to 70mph in a single gear! But jumping the thing was scary. But a 500 engine with modern suspension and handling....gotta have one.
I had an '85 CR500 up til a couple of years ago. I've gotta get another open class 2-stroke... the '81 Maico 490 is lauded as the best air cooled open classer (I'm a Maico guy...); it'd be cool, but then I think about that freight train motor of the CR500, in a modern chassis with good brakes.... man, oh man...
and have been in the list of approved bikes ,for many years,
if you have a pro license and look thru the list.
its just that there hasnt been a class in AMA Pro MX or SX for man yyears that it was legal in.
It is legal, and used ,in AMA Pro super motard
hillclimb etc etc,, the diciplines of AMA Pro that have a class where 500CC 2 stroke bikes have a class. Metzger was on one in AMA super motard..for exxample.
(he owns three of them, i believe)
The bike is legal in all AMA amatuer classes that it *fits* in as well
in MX, HS ,enduro, GNCC etc.
I've been to LL's on them in the past, it is an approved bike in classes it fits.
(and when/if there is a contincency progam the factories always honored it as well)
You should come down to Archview for the Day after SX (stl supercross) ride day. Should have the Scott Rig, Monster Energy, Toyota, Ogio etc etc all out there. Anyway, I'll try to look for you at the d-17 races I go to.
