Race Bike-Practice Bike Setup

Edited Date/Time 12/23/2015 7:56am
We are starting off the season with a stock 16 YZ250F. Going to make a run at the 250C 12-16 Limited Classs.
Practice bike is a 15 YZ250F. Bike is stock for this class from last year. I am wondering if I should keep the 15 stock to keep them evenly powered OR mod the 15 with a FMF system and other small upgrades and tuned right to make it a little faster? Suspension will be the same, both done by FCR!
I had good luck with him practicing on a 125 during the week but racing a supermini on the weekends. I know kids that do it both ways.
I also have a YZ250 I make him ride some, works the piss out of him lol! Also make him train on my 450 during long breaks between races.
Love hearing others suggestions!

Try to keep both bikes as close as possible in setup so he doesn't have to adapt on race day.

is it legal to tune the 16 as well? wouldnt it be a better idea to get the race bike tuned before the practice bike?

On my bikes I just worry about the suspension being the same as that is most important and I can't afford to have two bikes with all the nice parts I put on my race bike.

Honestly I am not sure. We DID not tune the 15 just to be sure. I will be seeking clarification before touching the 16!

I think you're thinking / worrying a bit too much. I don't know USA race categories that well but from what I understand if you are racing 250 C class you are wasting money putting it in the motor. I'd get suspension done and spend the rest on tires and running costs.

Why don't you make the YZ250 two-stroke the race bike so he holeshots the 42 man gate on the small Lorettas track...

Oh I agree. I wasn't planning on going in the engine. Just the normal bolt ons... I am very big on making sure the suspension is the best I can give him... That plus a properly maintained bike is about all I can do, he has to ride lol!

I have often wondered why that hasn't been done.... I'm to invested in the thumpers or I would consider that! I am realistic, I don't think he can make it all the way this year. Our goal is to get the regionals and do well there. His knee injury put us a year behind. These C class kids are fast B riders locally lol!!!

Make the race bike as good as you can first. Then add to practice bike to make it as close to race bike as possible.

They can't do anything to it. They are racing a stock class. The best thing you could do to it is not touch it but 3 times this year. Area, Regional, LL.
