Ultrasonic cleaner

Anyone tried the ultrasonic cleaning tanks you can buy on ebay for cleaning parts? I was thinking about buying one for cleaning cylinders, cases etc. but wasn't sure how well they would work.

We have an ultrasonic at our shop and that things works wonders. We mainly use it to clean up old carbs and they come out looking almost new.

They don't work as well as you think.

The ideal solution is a hot wash tank, but they are usually large and exensive.

I have good luck with a Harbor Freight sandblast cabinet using find walnut shell media. Followed by red and green scotch brite pads. Aluminum parts come out looking like new!

We use a Ultrasonic at Privateer Connection but mostly for carb cleans. Finding the right chemical to use in it is KEY to great success.

I use one on metal bearings to clean them before vapor treating them. Makes all the difference in spinning for days and spinning like a ceramic.

Does your ultrasonic cleaner have a built in heater? Ours heats the solution to whatever temp you set it and the combo of the heat and the ultrasonic gets just about anything clean. We use concentrate from McMaster Carr PN: 3175K45

I've used them for years.

Adding the correct solvent makes all the difference. We use nothing more than Simple Green and after a few hours the parts look like new. I cleaned up all my friends YZ125 parts using one.

Mine has a built in heater. How good does that chemical you mentioned work?

I haven't had that great of luck with mine. Have tried it on carburetors using 50/50 water + simple green OR straight simple green. Heat set to 40 deg C seems to work better for me than full heat, which has discolored carburetors.

I bought one of the cheap ebay ones... Im sure the more expensive commercial ones do a better job.
