That's true, but that doesn't mean his opinions about nutrition and training are right or applicable to the current era of racing.

1- RD5 is known to be one of if not the most physically fit athletes in the sport. That is a fact. He's done testing that show his genetics are that of a world class athlete. He would have the physicality to excel at any physically demanding sport. Just so happens he chose MX/SX.

2-I'm not 100% sure but I assume the money the top guys spend on a trainer is a smart and well thought out business decision. When you are making 1%er money then you need expenses to offset the income. Paying $250k to a trainer is smarter than paying it to Uncle Sam. I also noticed that many of the bigger names in our sport happen to reside in states that do not have income tax. Texas, Florida, and Washington are 3 of the 7 states that do not have income tax. Dung, Reed, Stew, Villo, Roczens, Andersen, AC92, Shorty, Millsaps, Hahn, Baggett, Andersen, are just a few I can think of that just so happen to have their permenant residency in one of the states mentioned above.

1,000,000.00 income = roughly $500,000 in taxes

1,000,000.00 income minus business expenses such as trainer, insurance, travel expenses, land for practice track, maintenance on track, heavy equipment, "work vehicles" etc. is going to yield a much better outcome. There are plenty of other creative ways to eat up more of that income tax free but that's a whole other topic.

3-To think that there are not individuals using PED's when there are millions of dollars to be made is very naive. Same can be said about thinking that there is nothing more to proper nutrition/training other than chicken, fish, veggies, fruits and riding a bicycle/pumping some iron. I know first hand the types of testing that Redbull does with a current sx/Mx champion and it is much more involved then eating the things mentioned above and lifting some weights. There is science behind it and a guy like Dunge is operating at 100% peak performance during sx and outdoors. His body is like a high performance engine. His strength/endurance training being the engine itself. The food, water, and supplements being the race fuel. And the testing they do would be the dyno tuning. If it was as simple as Hannah stated then lots more people would be at the elite level.

4-Hannah is a legend of the sport and nothing will ever change that. however, I agree with Jeffro and the sport is very different from when he raced. I agree and disagree with different points he made. He also comes off a bit harsh and I think people may take him more seriously if he refined his approach.

5-Bob Hannah don't give a shit what I think and I am ok with it.
They still pay federal income tax.

Which can be reduced via qualifying business or employment-related expenses, so his points still apply.

I think Hannah is supposedly a pretty mean cyclist. Some of you guys might want to rethink your fitness lesson to him. He could probably grind most of us into the pavement......even at 57-58 years old. I know a few old guys around here who are like 58-59 years old who are a beasts a on a bicycle.

True, but unless you know something he doesn't then your opinions are not applicable either. In other words, how do you know who Hannah has spoken to and what he knows?

I'm also not the one making bold claims like nutrition doesn't matter, or you don't need a coach/trainer.

All I know is what I see, and what I see is that all the top guys have riding and training coaches and trainers, and almost all of them follow some sort of strict diet.

IMO, it was harder physically, back in his day.
Bikes were crappier, tracks weren't groomed, motos were longer.
The fitness thing, sure, it gets you to a level that weeds out most, but, and I know it ain't fair, you can't do anything
about talent.

If anything, it's the freestyle gene pool that wins today, the iron man tough guy that doesn't get tired, only gets you so far on today's tracks.

I agree 100% but in this case I would say that RV had a trainer because that is what he needed to get his butt up and train everyday. Someone like Dungey does not need that, but he needed to focus on something other than just training. I think it's presumptious to think PEDs had anything to do with it, and to single out RV seems an insult to RV. The guy just did what he had to, to win.

With all the respect in the world towards Bob , he hasn't been relevant on a motorcycle in 30 freakin' years. This isn't even the same sport in which he competed in. He was a badass back in the day for racing against guys who trained the same way.....today? That would NOT cut it! Christ , there were dudes smoking cigarette's on the line when he raced. I admire Bob , but the truth is , he's so far detached from this sport that his opinion on the matter doesn't equal a pile of dog shit. Sorry.
What makes your opinion any better?
My opinion definitely ISN'T more valuable than Bob's. But what he says in a couple of those lines is not only wrong , it's completely full of shit , and at the same time pretty much called every single rider in the past 10-15yrs " dumb! "

BH: It’s all BS, if you ask me. You need a nutrition coach? If you are working as hard as you should be working you should be able to eat anything you freakin’ want. That’s bull. A riding coach, for the right guy, that makes since. But does Villopoto - man I got a issue with this - does Villopoto pay a trainer for five years, 250,000 dollars because the stupid guy doesn’t get it the first year, and the second year? Why is he paying him five years later. I got a real problem with that. I have my reasoning with why he pays him, and it’s not how to ride a motorcycle or what he eats. I don’t know, but maybe he sells him some stuff that other people don’t have the opportunity to buy. I think some of these guys are taking some stuff that they shouldn’t be taking. And a few people are getting busted right now. So, if they want to take substances that are illegal, boot their butts out. I got no patience for that. I ride a lot of bicycles and I really have no patience for that. The drug industry in cycling is just out of control, in the whole sports industry it’s out of hand, but in the bicycles it’s really out of hand. I watch all big bicycle racing, I watch all the tours in Europe. But if you don’t like doping might as well just shut it off. Because everyone in there is a dope head. It’s sad because I got dopers racing me in Boise, Idaho, in the 50 plus class.

You need a nutrition coach? If you are working as hard as you should be working you should be able to eat anything you freakin’ want. .....Clueless comes to mind here! On so many levels it's not even funny.

I got a real problem with that. ...So what he's saying about RV , RC , James , Jmart , RD , and just about everyone else on the main gate in an SX race or the top 20 in an outdoor national....is that they are stupid? How many of those guys have not only thanked their trainers for helping them put the pieces together , but ALSO keep re-hiring ( usually the same trainer year after year?? They are all stupid , and love just throwing money down the drain and none of them know what they are doing , or what they are talking about?

Does he seriously think that a highly paid rider couldn't find these " miriacle drugs " on his own? Nobody in their right mind would think " yeah , this guy can get me the dope , I'll just pay him $200,000 yr for it ".

Why does any serious sport athlete on the fucking planet , have a trainer? They do , because they guide that athlete on how to get his body to perform at 100% , for the duration that it needs to perform at. You DON'T just shoot dope and it'll magically make you a champion. You're forgetting the other 1000 different things a legitimae trainer can do for an athlete.

" his part here is so fucking retarded I don't even know what to say. So everyone on the line is doping huh Bob? Not you of course , but obviously anyone who beats you are is right on your heals during your +50 bicycle race?

Sorry dudes , but I lost a lot of respect for ol' Bob today when i read this. he not only called every single top 10-20 guy on the gate in the past 10-20yrs , fucking stupid idiots that all do dope. That is what I take from it. Fuck Bob and the horse he rode in on!

To be fair, his " Because everyone in there is a dope head" comment was referencing top-level bicycle racing in Europe, not American motocross.

You know I really didn't type all that much there. Most of it was copy / paste. And I can't / don't want to ride in this shitty weather. I wish i could though.

Obviously but I think what I said about those states still carries some weight. I'm sure this is not a Newsflash. There are lots of people that earn lots of money but don't necessarily pay lots of taxes.

I get that , but he brought it all up in one paragraph , hence linking it towards the point he was trying to get across. Which summing it up " All the riders are wealthy , stupid pricks , that can't train on their own and all do dope. "

I(f you break down that whole paragraph....that is exactly what he said. Fuck that guy.

I know man, I was agreeing with you.

Capital gains taxes are 20% in the top bracket, half of the 39.6% top bracket for earned income.

Our relatively young sport was built on the shoulders of great riders and champions like Bob Hannah, and it is absolute ignorance to discount their opinions based on the passage of time, or any other misinformed premise.

It appears that some weren't too happy with what he had to say on this controversial topic, but tough shit. I hope they're not waiting around for an apology.

The bikes they rode were such pieces of shit that most modern guys wouldn't want to ride on across the pits, much less at a place like Unadila for 45 +2.

Hannah (and DeCoster, and Mikkola and Bailey, and O'Mara and others of their ilk) went 45 + 2, HARD, and they got to where they could without coaches. They figured things out themselves

Nowadays what is the longest moto they run - 35+2 or something? On bikes suspended so well they iron out 3ft deep breaking bumps and last in control from modern jumps?

Hannah does have the mindset of a hard core bad ass from back in the day. I think we could use more of that as I am a little sick of hearing the pablum we usually hear these days.

As far as RV needing a riding coach - I know that sometimes you feel like you are doing X when in fact you are doing Y. An outside observer (riding coach) can sometimes pick up on that before you do, I can see the value in that.

i dont think you can compare the era's, look at the corner speeds now, and how fast the bikes are compared to back then, they pace that Hannah and co rode at would be considered trail riding now, as for supercross, Hannah by the mid 80's was complaining that the jumps were to big and dangerous, compare those to what they do now,

as for paying trainers, or as his comments seen paying Aldon Baker, its their money, let them do what they want, i think if you look at Dungey this year you have to say there was an improvement, weather mental or physical (probably both) he was a better rider this year,

Sorry, but I couldn't take your post seriously when I got to the "they (I assume you meant the) pace that Hannah and co rode at would be considered trail riding now". You might want to re-think that statement. Did you ever witness Buckwheat in person??? Trail riding...Shocked

What's your point? Because a freak of nature like Michael Phelps does it (in a completely different sport), that it should work for anybody?

I don't want an apology nor does anyone else on this board for that matter ( Except for some of the riders themselves ). It doesn't change the fact that he's been completely detached from this sport for 30yrs , and in my opinion has no idea WTF he's talking about. And YOU and many others that want to jump on his nuts and say " It's all ok....Bob Hannah said it ".......puts you and the others that agree with what he said , in the group that calls all our riders over the past 20yrs , stupid cheaters.

because if you agree with what he said....than that is EXACTLY what you're saying!

And just for the record , he isn't the only disgruntled old mx'er dude I've read this shit from. What's funny is , I've drank beers and bullshitted in some very long conversations with riders that actually raced Bob......and for Bob to come off all high and mighty , well......pot meet kettle!

Sorry, but I couldn't take your post seriously when I got to the "they (I assume you meant the) pace that Hannah and co rode at would be considered trail riding now". You might want to re-think that statement. Did you ever witness Buckwheat in person??? Trail riding...Shocked
All a person has to do is go pull up some early to mid 80's motos and watch for themselves. Scott is 100% correct. The speed they carried back then would not win a C class race , let alone a B or A. And yeah , I know the equipment they were on held them back.....but make no mistake , their speed on them is NOT even close to what the riders do now days. I admire what they were able to do back then on those machines , but lets be real here.......there is nothing on any of those tracks a fast C rider now days couldn't do. Sorry if that hurts the " old school " moto head's feelings.

What's your point? Because a freak of nature like Michael Phelps does it (in a completely different sport), that it should work for anybody?
Because it may not agree with your argument he's a freak of nature?

I do agree somewhat with this but I also think it was ignorant for Bob to say some of the things he said.. Like jeffro said he is calling all the modern day riders stupid because back in his day it was different.. Yeah it was very different

I'm not sure what you're really getting at here. My point is that posting that graphic like it somehow supports the "you should be able to eat anything you want" argument makes no sense. You can't and shouldn't compare anything Phelps does to anyone racing motocross.

This thread is priceless. Hannah has forgotten more about fitness, nutrition, psyching people out and racing than 90% of the mouth breathers on this forum know. He does what he has always done which is to make some bombastic statements and everybody is butt hurt. The really funny part is that he probably knows more about what the current guys are doing than most of the commenters here Smile

I very , very much doubt that! He simply has no clue to as to why all the top riders in the past 20yrs have hired trainers. He is about as far out of the loop as you can get from the sounds of it.

Boy , I sure would love him to walk up to someone like RV , RD , Stewart , Tomac and ANY of the other top riders and say " Hey so-n-so.....you're stupid for having a trainer , and don't know what you're doing "...." and I got a problem with what you do "........" You're fuckin' lazy and shouldn't need any help ". ....." OH...and I know all this because some 50yr old dude on peds beat me in a fucking bicycle race ".........Blah , blah , blah. Blow it out your ass Bob!

Legend of the sport for sure. Saying complete and utter useless bullshit is another thing he seems to be good at. Like I said Bob.....go up to any of the past champions in the past 20yrs and tell them they are all stupid for having trainers. Tell them how they have wasted their money , and when you walk away , make sure you call them a drug addict.

Stay classy Bob.
