Like my first wife used to say...it looks oddly big.
There must be a functional reason. What is it? Just for fairing clearance?
seriously. its like 4' long.
Pit Row
1) All the fuel, electronics, lights, etc. are high-slung weight. The lower pipe makes up for a few percent of that.
2) Heat. Get the exhaust away from the engine and everything runs cooler including the riders.
3) Large mufflers last longer on an endurance race bike without adding restriction and/or losing power.
4) Working on the bike is easier without the huge, hot exhaust in the way.
That's just my own speculation, not based on any insider knowledge or experience riding rally bikes.
Yup. And they where shorter on the bigger bore machines in the past. It's either a longer header or a longer muffler. My guess is performance wise, the longer mufflers option is better. These bikes are build with compromises on looks for utility (aka fuel and navigation), cooling and weight distribution.
The fully supported guys change fenders to match the terrain of the day.
Most of the time in the dry sand they run low, on wet days they run high.

I misd the old 900cc days with 25 gallons of fuel hanging all over..
That little fender may double as a fork brace to keep bushings alive and well.
Would love to ride a Rally Bike
