I'm thinking of coming out to the NAMM show at the convention center and also hit A2. I remember last time I did that, I got killed in traffic because the closest I could get a hotel was past Buena Park and it took me 1:30 minutes to get from the stadium to my hotel and about $45 in cab fare (for about 15 miles travel distance). The shuttle from the hotel was pretty good actually.

Any local knowledge suggestions? Should I get a hotel away from Disney and get a car or:

suck it up $$$$ and get a hotel on the main drag and just shuttle around that area?

In on 1/15 and out 1/18.

Which Airport? LAX or John Wayne......or does it matter?

Rush hours and traffic suggestions?

John Wayne is easier to Anaheim. Get a hotel on the main drag Harbor or Katella. If you can't get any near I can give you info.

I remember one year, I damn near missed my flight because of all the people coming INTO LA on a Sunday night! From the DESERT! Traffic jam miles long. I guess people go to the desert on the w/e? 4 hours. Luckily, it was the 11:30 PM out flight and we made it with about 20 minutes to spare. That would have been nice to know back then.

We did the Fender booth last year and got to catch A2. No traffic problems here. We flew in and out of John Wayne. Our hotel was right across the street from the convention center. A buddy does sound for the races so we were in like Flint.

Our traffic patterns have to be learned to be efficient. JW is a piece of cake compared to LAX. Long Beach is another alt. . It is fairly easy also. Stick with JW.

Ok I went to NAMM last year and it's totally LAME !!! A bunch of guys with long hair who should have cut it back when the 80's ended. It just seemed like a bunch of groupies from what I could see, never saw any actual people in bands and all the music was local bands.

You must have missed the artists at the booths demonstrating the equipment. There were plenty of "rock stars" there. I was there all day, every day though. NAMM isn't about bands playing. I do agree on the long hair thing. It was quite comical. There's nothing wrong with long hair, but have enough of it on your head to make it work. The majority, like you said, should have given it up in the early 90's when they probably still had hair.

NAMM is like the Indy Dealer Trade show for music equipments stores. They always have the latest and greatest musical instruments at NAMM.

John Wayne can either be way less expensive or way more expensive than LAX....airfares are like throwing darts.

I have been going to NAMM since the early 90s and have seen some major players there. Saw EVH at the Peavey booth get whisked away because he was too drunk to function. I have watched Pat Martino play away and no one even sat and watched. I sat and talked to Terry Bozzio about 10 years ago. I could go on, it is for the instruments and gear mostly. If you have the connections the nighttime shows can be all time.

The Marriott is right there. Very nice hotel. Pool is super nice, bars, the area and very near the Anaheim stadium.

The NAMM show is only a fraction of what it used to be. If you have never been, then I would suggest going. Its cool to see.

I try to go to 2 shows a year; Namm and LDI, with LDI being more important to me. Although NAMM is more of a "music" show, they still have a lot of Lighting and Pro Sound gear at one place. I can catch up on all the latest products - and see the gear and new software - mostly in one spot.

LED lighting has really grown in the last 12 months and the new fixtures are nothing short of amazing. The larger stage Lighting and Sound companies still show at NAMM.

The nighttime jams are fun to attend as I really appreciate live music - sometimes unscripted - and great players. I remember seeing Stanley Jordon sit in one year in a bar in Nashville. I love Jams. Did a show with the Romantics and The Producers and no-one showed (last minute show w/ no advertising) and they jammed for 2 hours to 17 paid in attendance. Then Travers showed up and jammed and players from Hatchet (who all live in Orlando) sat in....like 12 of the top players in the world (at that time) onstage - unrehearsed - just calling songs and key changes. Love that shit.

teggers and CR500Rider what do you guys do?

I have been going to the Winter Namm for over 20 years, This year will be very poorly atteneded, Even Yamaha who has the biggest booth is cutting way back. There booth is really a couple of ball rooms in the Marriot away from the rest of the show. The best part of it is That A-2 is happening on that weekend. As Sondra said There are alot of rocker wanna be's that attend. very funny in a sad kind of way.But there is alot of good music if your connected.

I saw Spinal Tap at the Anaheim Hilton one year after the NAMM show. Great/funny show! I haven't been to one in years though. I'd love to hit it up this year.

That is the plan right now. John Wayne, Courtyard near the Convention center, rent a car for 3 days. Are you wrenching for someone Saturday?

I'm hoping to go on Thursday this year and beat some of the mob crush that sets in on the weekend. Sandra, it's about the gear and instruments not the shows. Although it is fun to catch the occasional rock star demo session.

I remember last year trying to see over a small crowd ... to see the drummer that was just killing it.

It was some guy demoing a drum kit patch on a guitar MIDI controller. lol

First Off - Thanks so much for the people that have called me. It has helped so much to figure out where to stay and how to go about the whole trip......Motodrive Rocks! ...............(worm) I have to hit Namm when I get in and if I can do the whole show in 3 hours on Thursday - which would be a joke (but do-able if i basically jog through the whole thing) - I can ride on Friday (I am only there to see certain new lighting and video consoles anyway - so I can blow the show pretty fast). Where are you talking about riding?

Our company, "Recording Magazine" will have a booth at NAMM as well. Really wish I was tagging along so I could make A2 but it's pretty much just the editors and sales staff. Seems like everyone is cutting back at the NAMM and AES shows lately. Especially this year. Really bummed I can't go with everything being right there. Make sure you drop by our booth, grab a mag and give them some shit about not bringing the art director along. :-)

That's one of my jobs. Lighting, Sound, Effects. I don't get to (LD) design near as much as I want. www.timeggers.com
