I love using the WC holeshot device but always had a hard time setting it myself at the line. I always thought it was crazy that it doesn't lock into place for setting.
Anyway, sometimes I could get a helper to hold the lever up but other times I was by myself. I tried setting it by reaching over the bars and compressing the forks but I stopped that after I felt like I busted a rib on the handlebar pad.
I'm an engineer so I was determined to come up with a better solution. I tried rubber bands, string, and then I tried bungee!
Here's my solution which works perfect. I use a 11" bungee cord (came in a pack from Lowes), you can use any size that works for your bike setup. It needs to go from the holeshot lever to something on the bike.

One end I crimped the hook closed a little. This is the end I use on the holeshot device lever:

I attach the closed hook end on the holeshot lever and the other end to radiator guards (you could use anything that you can find on your bike that you can hook to):

I then wrap the bungee around the front steering stem. This is easy to take off at the line and it stays secure while on the track. I just unhook it for next time and then secure it back.

There you have it! A simple solution to setting a holeshot device by yourself!

I used a long boot lace with a loop. Put the loop around the lever and pulled up while compressing the forks. It worked but rarely on the first try.
Seems to me you could market that, and make your own bungie strap..... Sell it for $9.99. And maybe in 3 years all the pro teams will be using them.
I lean way over the bike. Grab the front wheel as far forward as I can, and then pull backwards (this makes the suspension compress and it locks into place.) Learned that technique from watching kdub on the starting line in a SX race.

My short friends hate me. I lean the bike a little to the left, stick my left hand over the bars to the fork guard. Roll it a few ft. and hit the front brake.
Grab the throttle side of the bar with your left hand round the back of the grip and use your thumb to pull the brake lever.
Pull the bike down with the brake on , and using your right hand, click the start device on.
My long neanderthal arms help.
You dont need a bunch of tension ,all you are looking for is to hang the unsprung weight and stop fork extension.
Unless you are short legged.
