Not bad for a few months worth of work. It's not like he's curing cancer, solving the world's problems, or producing a 'product'....

Purse I believe is $70,000 split between the 2 classes with a higher payout to the 450 over the 250. Remember this is put up by the track.

MXA also does not list the what the riders in Europe make contract wise but I don't think any of the top riders here or in Europe live by the purse money.

MXA does some pretty cool write ups regarding payout and salary info....here's a pretty cool one they did regarding RV

http://motocrossactionmag.com/home-page/you-asked-for-it-how-much-does-…

What's up with all the hostility in this thread? Oh, that's right, We're talking about payout and rider salary...a super serious topic that usually brings out the pissy in people. Never could understand why this topic becomes so controversial and upsetting....

So...these guys race for the Purse?

Or the Team Bonus?

Or their gear, helmet, boots, goggle bonus?

What's the AVERAGE purse for ANY OTHER PRO MOTOCROSS SERIES...?

Don't forget to subtract the entry fees paid! Pay to be a pro. Funny!

Oh, don't forget the free magazine as a benefit.

There isn't enough money to go around, the support class should be amateur and 1 Pro class for a bigger cut of the pie.

FFS if it was so bad do you really think they would do it?

Fucking mad intelligence around here.

I think that both systems have their pluses and minuses.

I was specifically replying to Mr.Info and not answering which system I felt was better.

Three things are Obvious.

-The top guys don't need the purse money.

-The guys who NEED the purse money are getting even less purse money than what the top guys are.

-The purse money for those who need the purse money (privateer) is grossly inadequate.

Oh and one more thing that's obvious, It has always been this way and will probably never change. Sad

First off in many peoples opinion this is THE motocross series (although I readily admit the GP's are equal and more pathetic in this regard). Secondly as Eli Tomac recently mentioned if you are not one of the elite it is very very difficult to make ends meet in this sport. All I am getting at by posting this is that there ought to be a way to increase this somewhat. I don't expect to see Nascar level purses any time soon but it sure would be nice if more competitors could comfortably afford to race the series. And thirdly but also of importance it just looks bush league in a sport that touts some of the hardest training, highest risk taking athletes on the planet.

You’re the biggest talent to hit the open market for 2016. That has to feel special. It’s huge. Our sport is tough. You can make a really good living if you’re one of the top guys, but if you’re in the middle then you can barely afford to get to the races. Motocross is a very top-heavy sport. If you’re a good guy, then you’re in good shape financially. If you’re a mid-pack guy, then you’re not really cutting it. As long as you’re getting on the podium and winning, then you’re in a good spot.

Can anything be done so that a mid-pack guy can be financially stable and reap the rewards of dedicating his life to racing motocross? That would be really healthy for the sport if that 10th- or 15th-place guy could sustain himself. Looking at other sports, a 10th or 15th place guy is killing it. It could be in golf, baseball, or Formula 1. In motocross you have to finish in the top five or seven to be making good money. Otherwise you could easily go find a job that makes more money or go back to school. It’s a bummer.

If he wasn't riding a motorcycle (and busting his ass I'm sure 60+ hours a week between training, riding and everything else) democrats would demand he get more pay and get his fair shake. Theyd set em up with free healthcare and a direction card.

Thing is... Ryan Dungey and Jeremy Martin don't need that winnings... They don't need it if it was double or triple that.

The guys lower down do need it though, and they're not getting it.

How to fix that? Who the hell knows.

The only way to increase the earnings for the guys who need it is to also increase it for the guys who don't need it. And all of that adds considerably to the expense of holding an event. And you know what that means for us...increased ticket prices. The promoters are going to make their money regardless of their expenses. It's simply passed down to us as spectators.

I think Tomac hit it on the nail...simply increase the purse money for your consistent riders who are not finishing in the top 10...This series travels across the country and relies on sponsorship money to support the established race teams. The purse increase doesn't have to be substantial but it is worth a discussion and may even make the series stronger.

Perhaps he should be talking to a lot of racers in other better known sports, track racing etc as I can safely say that being a 15th place guy isn't killing it, far from it.

So many lads are paying with their own sponsorship money in so much Motorsport and it's just the way it is, very very sad I know and agree but fucking hell look at moto3 and moto2! They are a big show and a World Series, never mind the national series around the world.

SX and Mx racers don't do so bad it seems.

And mentioning f1 in the same chat as mx is a bit stupid really, i don't care who it is or their pedigree and it's not a slant aimed at Tomac before anybody pops it but come on people, NEVER gonna happen.

The glory days are gone, much like when it was overly easy for folk racing mtb to make stupid amounts of cash.

The basic premise in all of this that may well be flawed is that working hard, training like a demon, and risking life and limb ought to equal a good payday. It does not.

Big money is paid by other sports and series because big money is flowing into it because large numbers of people watch it. MX, as much as I have loved it, raced it, and been at races all over the world from the late 60's, is still a very small, niche sport. We love it dearly, but most folks do not even follow it. That means outside sponsors get no ROI (and therefore spend no money on it) and there is no incentive for networks to pay to show it.

I get that Novak Djokovic just made $3.3 million for winning the US Open in tennis (plus another $500K for a points series of some sort). The reason is that huge numbers of people follow it which brings in mega-TV coverage (for which the networks pay as opposed to having to pay) and big money outside sponsors.

The reality is that the folks at the top in MX do make a considerable amount of money...and far more than some other occupations that require years of serious education and as much or more hard work.

I know that there is a great hue and cry that promoters must be killing it financially, but the reality is that if you look at the infrastructure required and the financial risk involved, they do not. Even SX, where the money flowing in is huge compared to outdoor MX, would not be doing what it is without Monster Trucks being in the mix. Other discussions have covered this at length (Monster Trucks draw more spectators and bring in more revue than SX. SX is a cost reducer through some economies of scale with venue and event costs).

I, like many of you, wish folks could make more in MX to be able to stay with it, but the reality is that is just will not happen. Look at Europe where MX has been a major sport for many more years than in the US. Those folks now make zero prize money and my understanding is that the teams pay dearly just to race. Maybe we have it better here than we think...

Good post. I think that bringing all this to light and discussing it even amongst us Vital members can't hurt. I don't think that just because these guys train hard and ride hard that they automatically should get paid. I would just like to see the mindset take hold that if MX/SX continues to gain traction in the public eye and if more money flows in that someone would pass out a little more of it to the riders helping put on the show. Just my 2 cents from a non connected nobody from nowhere Tongue
