On my truck and my Chevy van, I pour as much oil into the filter as it will hold before I thread it onto the block. I've always done this on cars/trucks with a vertical filter.

I was changing the oil on my Yamaha 450 tonight and considered laying the bike on it's side to change the oil filter. This way I can fill up the filter area with oil before I bolt the filter cover back on.

Is that a common practice on these bikes or am I overthinking this?

You are overthinking on the bike. All the oil is going to drain to the bottom of the engine when you shut the bike off under normal operation. The pickup is on the bottom of the engine and pulls oil from there to the top end and then back down through the oil pathway. If you lay the bike over and fill the oil filter orifice up with oil, it will drain down as soon as you stand the bike up anyway.

If you are that concerned , kick it over a few times holding the kill switch in.

Good to know. I haven't been into these modern engines yet, so I don't know the oil-circuit. I warm up the bike before oil & filter change, so there's always a bunch of oil in the filter area when I open it up. I was thinking there might be a check valve. I'll just keep doing it on the stand.

I always do that method. Kick it about 10 times or so then fire it up.

I do pre fill my filters on my vehicles though. If you put em in dry you run a risk of the oil rushing it and collapsing a dry filter.

I was thinking that the other day doing my oil change on my KTM, but I had never done it before on 4-strokes so I just ran it.
