So i was thinking. Some of these ideas are coming from some of the guys on here from previous threads, some entirely new. What if we would leave the main events points system alone. Keep the points per position as they are because I don't have a problem with that. BUT for extra motive and to make main events more interesting, have the second timed practice reward points. Maybe for the top 3 qualifying spots in practice. 1st- 3pts, 2nd- 2 pts, 3rd-1 point. A lot of times riders that may have a mechanical, off night or just a crash can lesson the damage if they might have the fastest time practice. For example, Pourcel.
Moving on to the main events. Keep the points the same. I do believe they have the best points system possible for rewarding the riders for positions. But we often see guys like RV, dungey or Stewart in the past run away with a title with 4 races left and sometimes even have it under control by round 10. What if they changed the gate picks around? The guys that make the main have the gate pick according to the points standings. So 1st in points would start far outside then so on and so fourth. The last few guys (thinking privateers here) that may not be in the standings yet have them line up according to practice times. This will have the top guys battling and trying to make moves to still get the points. Also this may get some privateers and other riders some TV time and publicity. This would only be used for the 450 class not the 250s. I know this is gonna get some criticism but oh well. I also know having the guys line up on the gate as my idea entails, might be a risk for injury for the top guys. But the sport is in general. Just thinking or another way to make SX more interesting and not be over by round 12 or 13. Thoughts?

If there is a new points system (and I did hear that the gang at Feld had done some polling with teams about a new system), I'm guessing they'll have run through various scenarios to examine how it'd potentially work.
While I'm not a huge fan of the idea, I am for something that keeps interest up throughout the season. Good racing does that. Injury-free seasons do that. But very often we get individual riders who are dominant throughout a season.
This might also encourage riders who'd sit out the bulk of the season (or not come back before the end) to come back.
If we're going to see something? I'd guess we'll hear all about it at the Monster Energy Cup.

Tell me, which race has the most potential to turn into a great battle:
A: Dungey holeshots while Roczen is back in 6th, Canard 8th, Stewart 11th and Tomac is 14th, etc....
or
B: Dungey holeshots with Roczen, Stewart and Tomac all right behind him
How do we increase the odds off all the contenders starting up front? Simple: Fewer riders in the main event. Throw the rest into a B-Main.
Guy like Kyle Partridge and Nicholas Schmidt would get way more exposure battling it out for a win in the B-Main than they ever will riding around outside the top 15 in the main event format we have now.
That said for OUTDOORS, I wonder what it would be like to invert the gate picks for MOTO 2 based on the finish on Moto 1. So winning moto 1 gives the last gate pick for Moto 2.
Now that I type it...perhaps that would be better in the MEC....
Motocross has a gate unlike other motorsports so everyone has a chance. When you line up like Nascar you get no passing.
I don't think it would make the TV program and the majority wouldn't go out of their way to watch it.
But it is highly unfair to the guy at the top, he earned that top spot, and the comfort of a points cushion.
Cripple him by giving him the unfair disadvantage of a bad gate pick? No thanks.
Only offer one year contracts. Boom. Done.

I believe there are two components to this. 1. gate pick and 2. start straight/first corner (holeshot) design. Timed qualifying to determine the fast 40 still works, and the idea of awarding some points based on qualifying is pretty cool, but let's drop the earned gate pick! The whole point of qualifying should be just that....to qualify! Not further give an advantage for the main event. Simply use the old school clothes pin approach and let each rider draw for their gate pick. You draw based on your fast 40 position, and may the best rider get the holeshot!
On the second point, the holeshot design should be the same spec at all tracks, and this means width, length and degree of turn. I believe by using the far outside of the stadium/track as the start would allow for a longer more uniform and wider sweeping holeshot. Allow more room for each rider to make the turn instead of a bottleneck we always see.
Just thoughts.....
there needs to be 3 10 lap mains....................it's SX not moto so forget about endurance............racing and lappers usually gets bad after halfway..........someone checks out
even if guys get hurt this would keep things tight each "main".............even a guy like Alessi can hang tight for 10 laps
Gotta be careful how far we take it, but it's a start...
I'm not old enough to remember this race, and maybe one of our elder-members can elaborate, but I believe there was a race back in the day where the guys who finished qualifying in the top five had to start on a row behind the rest of the field in the main event. This led to the leaders waiting to cross the finish line till they were outside the top five, in order to be able to start on the front row

If 2015 SX points were paid as follows:
1st - 20 Points
2nd - 19 Points
3rd - 18 Points
...and so on...
20th - 1 Point
Then the 2015 points chase would have ended Dungey 327 and Tomac 268. Still not a close title fight.
And remember the 2009 Anaheim opener when Stewart DNF'd (Erin Bates: "What happened?"; JS7: "I crashed")?
Well he reeled off a lot of wins after that and was able to take the title by a few points over Reed. If the points had been as mentioned above, he'd have lost the title to Reed by 9 points because Reed's consistency (and lack of a DNF) would be more important than wins.
I just know that with the current format, the entire day revolves around a single 18 minute main where the outcome is oftentimes decided by what happens in the first 10 seconds. If one contender gets a holeshot while the rest are mired in the back of the pack, you can pretty much head for the exits knowing who's going to win.
For consistently better racing, all of the race win contenders need to start together, period.
How about this yes I agree three classes there are so many writers flooding the ranks now it seems they're all being left without rides so why not a regional 125 series where they do all the qualifying and everything during the day practice program or something to that effect at night have the 250 and 450 qualifying during the downtime where they would usually have the KTM sideshow or fan shooting t-shirts and running and fat suits they could have the 125 Main Event Race the night program only shows the main event Race and then went right into the 250 and 450 main events the 125 Race should be no more than 10 laps and you would have still fit into the TV package it would also give a lot of up and coming rookies a place to go for max 2 years in the Class one year if you win the title you're out well I just solved it! I'm a goddamn genius
