In the world of competition there seem to be genetic predispositions that automatically make you great at a certain sport. But in motorsports do any such predispositions exist? Obviously in moto it takes an incredible amount of aerobic endurance, but also enough strength to muscle around the inertia of a 220lb bike.

As a local racer, I always personally look for any edge that I can get against others, since I'm not actually that talented, and the determining factor usually seems to be how long you can hold it wide open (besides skills and real race experience). So how or what would sculpt the perfect mx racer?

Under 250lbs would be a great place to start... taller than 5 foot would help too. I'm really helpful...

It seems like most of our top guys now are between 5'6" - 5'10" and about 140lbs - 160lbs. So, they're all the ones who wouldn't do so hot in football or basketball.

Common sense would tell you medium height, lean and strong.

I think the general average top guy fits in here, but there's always been a large group of outliers. Mike Bell, RC, TP, Villo, on and on.

Now if you want to talk Ideal MX mental type, you may find some more common characteristics that doesn't have such a large standard deviation.

I've always felt I was to tall at 6'1" (180 lbs). But so tall I couldn't make it work...but certainly not the ideal body type for MX bikes. 5'10" would be about right in my opinion, and maybe 160lbs.

It seems that many of the top guys the sport has seen are not really big guys either in stature or bulk; Carmichael, Stewart, RV, Hannah, Ward, Canard, etc. There have been several exceptions though.

I've sometimes wondered what a guy that was really good at track events could do on a bike (assuming he could ride well). We've probably all seen guys in high school track events that really have a genetic gift for sprinting, jumping, etc. If you could get one of these types into MX before he gets pulled over to the ball sports how could he do?? Maybe some pros were these types; I just haven't heard about this aspect of their careers. I tend to think that many guys who get into MX maybe weren't all that great at track or conventional youth sports and turned to other pursuits that they found they were better than their piers at. I think almost everyone gets an "ego feed" by being better at something than others around them. As we know there's more than just physical conditioning that makes a great MX rider but being blessed with the genes for efficient heart/lungs, fast twitch muscles and such could definitely be an advantage.

I can also confirm that my "bean pole" frame of 6" 4" tall and 180 lbs. is not good.
Also...
I think your body composition contributes a lot to how well you can take a crash and stay healthy!
First of all I know for a fact that crashing well is a skill! I know that because I lack it. I've been hurt in the stupidest crashes that others with more "stout" and compact frames seems to just shake off.
Secondly, I'm just too big to fit on a bike. I'm going to pop for the ridiculous $1000 price for that kit that raises my bike 2 in. on my next bike purchase.

I'm 5'10" and 160 lbs. most bikes and snowmobiles fit me great size wise. a lot of my buddies are bigger and heavier, and it seems that while they might be stronger overall, I have them beat when it comes to endurance.

I actually think that Motocross is one of those sports, where your body type doesn't match that much- as long as you're not too small and not too big (but even small guys like Decotis and big guys like De Dyker are incredibly fast). Most important is mental strength, than technique. Why? Because I see a lot of wfo guys being faster than clean riding guys.

You can make a much bigger difference with those than in any other sport. I mean what can you really do in running if you're not talented? Or car driving? Not much, comes down to talent. There's such a variety of things you need to consider in this sport...

I think being lucky and getting off like Bob Burnquist is the perfect body type.

On a bear.

Joke apart ... lots of stamina so not too much muscle volume, strong bones, strong ligaments.

Whoops are key, so I think someone tall has an edge.
