Decent 16" bmx bike??

Hey all,

my son started out on the strider. Was balancing in no time flat. He did nto want to go to a pedal bike next so I got him a tykes bike 16" balance bike. https://www.tykesbykes.com/pedal-bike-16-inch-balance-bike/

We took a first ever trip to the skate park yesterday and now he is hooked! https://youtu.be/NN_AflsKiw0

Now does anyone know if there any 16" bike out there that is not a complete piece of 50 pound crap? I figured some of the mx crew is also bmx aware. Yes I know he will outgrow it in a flash, but I want him to get something good and not some walmart special that will fall apart.

After looking around a bit, I think the Schwinn is a pretty decent choice for my kid. Cheap, but nicer than Fall-Apartmart You can get them at Toys R'US:



I saw some really nice Haro 16 inchers at my local bike shop. Those were under $200.

I agree. I found parts online and built a killer FMF bike for my grandson for about $250+ my time. Send pics tomorrow.

Perhaps, but for a 5 Y.O. it should last long enough for him to outgrow it. The OP didn't say his kid was going to race BMX.

You can dump a shit ton of money into a BMX mini. Bought two, matching , Redline Proline mini's off CL for $185 for the pair. Tires and some clean up had them in good shape.

Built this Redline Micro Mini , but used 20" wheels instead of the 18's. Micro on 20's work good for the little guys. Started with a $50 frame, $80 wheel set, and bits from various other bikes.




This build cost me a bit, and barely got used before the rider had out grown it. It just sits. Kids outgrow the Micro's and Mini's quick.





J&R BMX is about 20 minutes from here. Tons of BMX street, race bikes and parts.

They have some good closeout deals most of the time. I can not ever get out of there without dropping at least a hundy.

Hey PR you selling any of those? Time to by my nephew a pedal bike and start some BMX. He is doing great on the strider and will start racing that and hope he will be on a pedal bike next year.

Check out this one from Free Agent. I have a Free Agent and I just bought my son a Free Agent Champ last year. They are great bikes, and won't break the bank. I haven't owned this 16" but you can take off the training wheels and chain guard and be ready to rip. The price isn't bad, either ($219)

Cygnus, sold the micro, the SE, and one of the white Redlines. I am going to hang onto the last Redline and the Intense mini's. Just going to hang them up in the garage and look at them.

IMO , I would skip the Micro stuff, and just go on to a mini, unless the kid is just tiny. Once they get over 4 feet tall, the micro is useless. My nephew outgrew ours in about four months, and that was after putting 20's on it, instead of the stock 18's.

I pretty much gave the redline mini and micro away about two years ago. Keep an eye on craigslist. I bought these two matching Redline Mini's for $185 for the pair. Even came with the owners manuals. Tires , a brake cable, a set of bars, and some clean up on the top photo bike was all I did. It was a decent novice bike.

Let it go for $175 to a mom and son who were renting beaters at the track.

The one in the bottom pic , did basically the same, but put a new wheel set, seat, and bottom bracket on it as well, just for the reason of upgrading. It's the white bike in the second photo closest to the camera.

My nephew was about 46-47 inches tall at the time.

Another plus 1 for the hotrock
- my daughter is riding the wheels off her's

Loves the coaster break. Very easy transition from her gliders bikes
- went from glider to another small pedal bike in 1 min after she wanted to race the neighbors kids

Even went crazy and picked up a micro-mini (RL) to test from a friend before buying.... Worked out she wasn't into the hand break and loves the coaster break set up.... I asked her what she wanted, that's all it took.

We ride all over having contests, races and new tricks (building skills)

check out Spawn Cycles for little groms. The Specialized hot rock is still pretty Walmart-ish compaired to what this company is building for little rippers, as having a freewheel allows your child to ratchet back their pedals to stand up and balance.....My son out rides adults on single track with no climbing....

Spawns little 14 and 16 inch bikes are aluminum frame, 3 piece cranks, real freewheel, tectro front and rear v brakes, all sealed bearings, they rule. My son was riding lift acessed trails with me @ 3 on his fury.



I just built this for him this winter, its the next step up Banshee, with 16 inch wheels, I sourced a set of air forks for it to help him out a bit when we are decending, he is now hauling ass in it and scares me to death, he now is at the point where he needs disc brakes and rear suspension. We live at the top of a ski hill that has built a dozen or so great trails, and the lift to give us a ride back up.....So we ride a few times a week plus race BMX.






This is 3 generations riding together,my Dad @ 69 yrs old this summer, me @ 39 and my son Mason who just turned 4 in this photo.



Mase is also riding a Red Line Mirco mini in 5 and under BMX @ 4 years old and making mains and is getting on the box...




Even crazier is my Dad just bought him this and is rebuilding it as it was a tad thrashed.
They build total custom bikes for little ones that kill it....
