old 2stroke dyno charts!

Ill start with the 1986 RM vs. YZ 250.
The top, ink-drawn hp and dotted torque lines are a 1997 RM250 for comparisons sake. Eleven years made a big difference. More to come..

2002 250cc dyno runs. Notice the ktm has about SEVEN horsepower over the other some of the bikes in the mid/lower top range. Wow! KTM knows how to do power in a 2t.
more to come, in no particular order lol. Im just bored and figured someone would enjoy this. Is that yz250 REALLY revving to 10,800rpm?

2000 Dirt Rider courtesy of Hasletjoe. Curiously, their kx peak power numbers are 4-5 lower than MXA claims for the KX250.
More to come.

1996 250 dynos. The 96 RM250 with its one piece main powervalve has two to three more hp all over the band than the 97 RM 250. That two-stage powervalve killed the strong hit on the 97! ( I owned a 97 RM 250 so i noticed it more Smile more to come.

One thing i always noticed was that at (i think) 5500-6500 rpm, the honda ALWAYS seemed to have 2-3 more horsepower than the other bikes. Every single year up til the early 2000's. That part of the powerband was the CR250's wheelhouse.

94-95 KX250 numbers. Kawie had moved the intake and carb closer for 95 and juggled the kips and ignition timing and put a 100mm longer pipe on the 95. It had midrange in spades over the 94 but lost upper rpm power to its predecessor.

95 & 96 RM250 compared to 96 CR250.The 96 RM bests the CR slightly til (surprise!) 5500-6500 rpm. Then the CR kicks in the hit. After that both bikes seem pretty even. Even the 95 RM has 3-4 more hp in some spots than the 96 RM! Oops! Dirt Rider magazine loved the 96 RM though, and said it "ripped".
Didnt rip enough to beat the honda , but its suspension was apparently much better.

Yes, please. I like seeing the progression over time. IE 26 whp was king of the hill in 1986, 21 in ~1979.

1985 80cc dyno Smile The only other minibike dyno i can remember was the much-maligned 1986 kx80, which had 4-5 more horsepower all through the midrange over the beloved 1985 kx80. For some reason the 86 kx80 powerband was razor thin. My cousin had a new 86 kx80, and my 85 cr80 felt like an open bike on the bottom end compared to his kx even though his bike had 4 more hp on the dyno on bottom end. Weird!

Yes, 85 was the year the other bikes started catching up with that KX80 motor that was so much better than everything else in 83 and 84. You wanna see a big difference, compare the 85 CR80 to the 86 or 87, which made about 4 more peak hp than the 85.

I had all those old dyno charts back in the day but cant remember them. I DO remember the 86 cr80 having one horsepower for every two pounds of weight power ratio or similar. They compared it to a "top fuel dragster" lol. People dont realize how much less friction and power a nikasil liner provides.(which was the major diff. Between 85-86 plus very minor porting changes.)

There HAS to be more people with dyno charts to share. It takes me ten seconds to snap a pic and post it; come on guys! This is a nice resource for guys who buy used bikes. Ive got basically every bike test from 96-97 as well if anyone wants a copy for that vintage 125 or 250.

1988 RM250. Great power curve; the magazines raved about its tractable and smooth powerband, and in this case the dyno backs it up.

Dyno readings are strange: in many, many cases, a bike will have a powerful power and torque curve on the dyno, but the transition to actual power in the real world will be the polar opposite- as in the 1986 KX80 we talked about. I also remember the 94 or 95 yz250 was NOT the class of the field, but somehow the bike was a holeshot machine that always felt hooked up with ample traction, according to the magazines that year. I think that it has a LOT to do between the relationship of the swingarm pivot, rear suspension and axle relationship if the truth was known. Kawasaki took a strong motor (85 kx80), ADDED MORE power and torque everywhere, and put it in a brand-new frame that suddenly gave the bike a razor-thin top end only powetband- even though the dyno said the exact opposite. Very interesting stuff to me Smile

Yes
The whole peak hp vs on track... Just look on this thread at mid 90s KX125s...the 94-98 was always ragged as on slow yet the peak hp is there.

The case reed CR250's did good on the dyno, but on the track it was a different story.

Found a 96 125 dyno credit Tblazier

its interesting to see how the manufactures developed and also the direction they took in terms of power vs tractability. I don't suppose these a 250 dyno chart for 2001? I own a 2001 rm 250 and had a go on a mates 05 rm250 and was amazed at the difference in power delivery. the 05 feels very linear in comparison

I couldnt find a chart for 01. Im sure somebody has it, but whether anyone will post it is another thing.

1987 80cc dyno chart - the Honda seized in testing but it made something like 18.4 in another test.

The weak sauce 85 RM125. Still 2 hp better than the infamous 85 YZ125.

The 1988 YZ125. A good motor, finally some top end compared to the 86 and 87.
