These looks great. Might have to get one. An no suspension issues to sort out! SSS is the best out there.

Agree with all your points except 18 inch wheel. I'll never race offroad without an 18 inch wheel again.

I'd like to see it come with the lighting coil also, like the KTMs. I can deal without having e-start or a bigger tank, but I hate wiring lights in...

Likely the 250x was a late add on due to the response to the FX and I would guess this is why no large tank.. same for the sparky, likely don't have one even in production yet. give them credence for stepping to the plate. Now if they make my beloved IT 200 or YZ200X I would jump ship like one of black beards crew for the Yamaha ship! 250s just a bit to much for me in the woods.

Yes 5spd, prolly not like a WR of years past but more woods worthy than a 6spd??also comes with reserve petcock and Oring chain.

No big tank, no lighting capabilities, no spark arrestor, kickstand is horrible, 18 inch rear wheel is personal preference....

I'm not too impressed, but at least they are recognizing that the market segment for that bike exists. Like someone said, maybe it was last minute and it'll only get better from here!

At the risk of sounding incredibly stupid, what's the point of a reserve petcock? Never understood this.

There is no point for racing, it's a good feature for trail riding though.

TriRacer, at a track when you run out of fuel you can just push your bike to the truck and refuel. When trail riding you cant just push it back to the truck since usually you are several miles from where you parked. When you're trail riding and the bike sputters out of fuel, time to hit that reserve and bee-line it straight back to the truck!

not everyone races offroad, keep that in mind. especially the majority of people that buy X version bikes.

mine?

kickstand, absolutely necessary
18" rear wheel? yeah, because pinch flats are awesome on 150+ mile rides right?
5 speed? no, 6 speed yes.

maybe i read your response wrong, but every single item in your list including the big tank is necessary in an X version. otherwise, why not just release the moto version and call it an off-roader.

my take is that the 250XC and 300XC is the way to go for anyone riding off-road. at least Yamaha is putting in some effort, a lot of respect for that move. they could do it better, but this is a good way to get their feet wet again.

More YZ's out there is good by me. It doesn't take much to get a 250 2-stoke off-road friendly in the first place, they just gave us a few more options to start with. Curious if they tackled any engine or suspension tuning or if it's straight moto-YZ stuff.

From Dirt Rider

"and Yamaha made some tweaks to the compression ratio, exhaust port timing, CDI-unit (ignition timing), and power valve (which Yamaha claims will bring smoother power via broader opening timing). Last but certainly not least, the change that riders will likely be most excited about is the wide-ratio, 5-speed transmission that Yamaha hopes will make this unit more versatile when used over various types of terrain."

The review I read says it DOES come with a WR tranny and suspension tuned for off- road. An E-start would've been nice, but I'm not bitching. Just glad to see Yamaha expanding its 2-Stroke lineup. Good on them. Hope they sell a chit load of them.

Yes, you are correct at least Yamaha is making a effort. bottom line is, i should not be posting jacked on kettle corn and Monster.

Will this be the ten year anniversary of when they got the aluminum frame and then never changed again? They should do a 10 year anniversary bike.

*edit: darn I missed it by a year.

Why would they put a new big brake on the 4 strokes and not the 2 strokes. Forget about updating the bike, just making production cheaper would justify that upgrade. Same could be said for the 4 stroke swingarm and rear wheel. The more parts that will interchange across all the models the better.

In other words....be like KTM

Not having a big tank is just silly on an off-road bike. It is awesome to see them putting in an effort for the off-roaders. The other 3 Japanese manufacturers seem to not be aware that both track AND trails exist.

How could anyone hate on this?? Isn't this exactly what people always bitch about is wanting new 2 strokes from the Japanese manufacturers? that's exactly what Yamaha gave you. Any new 2 stroke developments are usually at least a step in the right direction and this is obviously good.

it has a lower compression ratio and a wide ratio 5 speed gearbox with porting and timing differences from the YZ.

The rear wheel and kickstand Are upgrades that they give you. I don't know why you would be pissed about that.

Plus the YZ 250 has basically had things changed slowly over the years to make it a very usable, fast and complete bike. This year they just changed the rims and chain to improve looks and be more durable. Im sure eventually down the road they will upgrade the frame and engine maybe new ones... If they haven't stopped upgrading them yet they probably won't stop but it might be a long time before it's an all new bike again.

I like yamaha's effort that is for sure, I think they have recognized the ktm effort (which is something I like too)and are realizing the call for more models of bikes to suit everyone's needs. As another poster said "they can only get better". I think it is a great move for them going into the off road market more and more, I like the new yellow model mx'ers also, those look pretty great!!

it also has a different expansion chamber.

it really isn't much different than what a 250XC is...... a bike that can be at home on a moto track or in the woods. i have to commend yamaha for doing this. it has to be an eye opener for the other japs that they are losing market share to the orange company that "used to be" little more than a blip on the radar.

i'm a KTM guy but if KTM were to stop building bikes, i'd be on a yamaha and probably this bike. my guess is that they will sell all that they import. there are a lot of diehard yami guys out there. a good friend of mine is one of said guys but was seriously contemplating an orange bike..... after i sent him the info on this bike, he was instantly at "full mast." he already has a call into his dealer with a down on one to reserve it.

Tell me that when you are on a goat trail about six inches wide, on the side of a hill that's sloped about 60 degrees, bike stalled, and the kick starter is on the side facing the up-slope of the hill. You can be as macho as you want, but I can't even count the number of times I've been in that situation with my RM250 or YZ450F and wished like all hell that they had electric start. This isn't a moto bike (though electric start has a lot of benefits there as well), this thing is meant to be put through some serious crap.

That said, I really, really, really want one!!!Woohoo

Does anyone feel the wide-ratio and lower compression may actually be a good thing on the MX track?
6/4/2015 6:44pm
This is awesome. Yamaha is my favorite brand these days due to their truly innovative ideas and 2T offerings (even sans development). KTM is awesome too, but not as innovative as Yamaha. The other big manufacturers can take their boring lines and shove them.

I like it, it's a big step in the right direction for 2 strokes. i applaud Yamaha for answering the call for more variation. I'm not going to pick it apart, I'm just stoked they are going in this direction and love that this bike is in their lineup. this bike should sell well imo
