It's unfair to those trying to bring money and outside sponsorship into a sport that needs it desperately...exclusive deals are bad for a sport that needs money..

I think Chad has a very valid argument to be honest! Who are they to tell a rider what he can / can't wear on a race ta HE paid to enter!

Not only does Go-Pro not let anyone else use the camera of their choice , but they footage of what they get , they don't share shit with anyone! Fuck them and their stupid little 3sec helmet cam videos! Who is to say that companies like Reflex or 360 wouldn't give us full moto videos?

So sick and tired of these companies coming in and monopolizing our sport! It does nothing but hinder this sport and other companies who want to pay good god damn money to be part of it! Fuck you Go-Pro!

Wish we could see it at motocross I think it would give a new and unique perspective of the race. As for the camera I'm guessing they are hoping that they won't let him wear it because if Reed doesn't show up that will get more talk then the amount he got today.
Someone literally just told me that theory about using a vocal rider for that purpose. Laughing

H&H ran into the same trouble when Contour tried to sponsor them in SX a few years ago. From what Watson talked about they tried to run an empty camera body on they helmet with obviously no ability to film anything but they were still shot down by Feld.

Not sure exactly how the "series sponsorships" work, but this just sounds like another case of MX Sports taking Go Pro's money and giving them what they want, versus doing what is good for the sport. I've said it many times...MX Sports is BAD for the sport.

Exactly.

And the bidding war will probably be on when it runs out.

Exclusive deals are made all of the time.

Didn't Reed just announce that his 22 clothing was going to be sold by an exclusive vendor?

Honda already did @ the GP's in the 150 class... Honda even receives a Manufacturers Trophy after the race...

So since Honda sponsors the Daytona sx does that mean the other brands can't race?

The ufc needed there sport to grow any way possible, guys are making huge money off indorsements ect. And they needed that to draw money and a certain spotlight to the sport, now established as a major sport they inked a deal with reebok and guys are going to loose big money from having to wear a reebok outfit anytime they are on TV. So this sport is far from established so why sign exclusive deals when the helmet cam business is huge money, enough money to get a privateer through an entire sx and mx race season.

I think the powers that run mx and sx need to realize that they need to stop focusing on how much money can they make in a single season and pray to whatever they pray to that the next season goes well to and maybe make a plan of attack for a 10 year goal. Because other then some good TV packages (they are horrible in Canada) but nothing has changed and it's almost becoming stale imo.

How would a personal sponsor of Chads bring money into the sport?

And by into the sport, I mean putting money into the series. Not the sport in general at a local level.

That's bullshit

Competition law
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Antitrust" redirects here. For the 2001 film, see Antitrust (film). For laws specific to the U.S., see United States antitrust law.

Competition law is a law that promotes or seeks to maintain market competition by regulating anti-competitive conduct by companies.[1][2] Competition law is implemented through public and private enforcement.[3]

In Korea and Japan, the competition law prevents certain forms of conglomerates. Competition law is considered as a tool to stimulate economic growth in many of Asia's developing countries, including India. There has also been speculation that competition law has solved some problems like monetary problems in Israel and the lack of effective institutions and regulations in Indonesia.[citation needed] In addition, competition law has promoted fairness in China and Indonesia as well as international integration in Vietnam.[1]

Competition law is known as antitrust law in the United States and European Union,[4] and as anti-monopoly law in China [1] and Russia. In previous years it has been known as trade practices law in the United Kingdom and Australia.

The history of competition law reaches back to the Roman Empire. The business practices of market traders, guilds and governments have always been subject to scrutiny, and sometimes severe sanctions. Since the 20th century, competition law has become global.[5] The two largest and most influential systems of competition regulation are United States antitrust law and European Union competition law. National and regional competition authorities across the world have formed international support and enforcement networks.

Modern competition law has historically evolved on a country level to promote and maintain fair competition in markets principally within the territorial boundaries of nation-states. National competition law usually does not cover activity beyond territorial borders unless it has significant effects at nation-state level.[2] Countries may allow for extraterritorial jurisdiction in competition cases based on so-called effects doctrine.[2][6] The protection of international competition is governed by international competition agreements. In 1945, during the negotiations preceding the adoption of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) in 1947, limited international competition obligations were proposed within the Charter for an International Trade Organisation. These obligations were not included in GATT, but in 1994, with the conclusion of the Uruguay Round of GATT Multilateral Negotiations, the World Trade Organization (WTO) was created. The Agreement Establishing the WTO included a range of limited provisions on various cross-border competition issues on a sector specific basis.[7]

Really? I guess any rider bringing in outside sponsor money doesn't do anything to help the sport...you can't be serious

It's (maybe) a blunder by the series promoter to cave to an 'exclusive' arrangement with such predatorial terms. I say maybe because, if MX Sports shopped the deal around to the other camera peddlers and got no bites before inking a lockout deal with GoPro, then the only idiots are the other camera OEMs. If they did not shop it to gauge other interest, it is DC and MX Sports blunder.

But, a deal is a deal.

Good for Chad, MX Sports is only shooting themselves in the foot not letting Reed ride in his last year racing MX Nationals. Imagine the last image of Chad racing MX in America is an official not letting him ride because of a "sponsor conflict". That would be a disgrace not only to Chad, but the series he has supported his whole career.

The riders have the choice on wether they want to wear the GoPro. They can decline and many do. And yes, several of the riders have "GoPro deals". The rules are the rules...and yes, that even includes YOU Chad Reed.

Right into the union president for riders. They are independent contractors, no way they can tell them what brand of anything they can use. It is definitely time to make sure the riders don't get screwed!
F Yeah!

The "industry" chews these riders up and spits them out.

The riders really need to unionize or at a minimum have a Racers Association to represent them and present a united front when there are purse, safety and insurance issues.

Look, I like the camera myself and have no problem with Reed or anyone else making money.

But GoPro has a contract which it paid for. Until it expires by its terms or is rescinded it will stand.

The money that was paid for that contract was probably way more lucrative than its nearest competitor.

If there is a new camera contract when this one expires there will be a whole lot more money involved and it should at minimum be shared with the riders.

I'm not saying there doesn't need to be a change to allow this type of thing to happen, but it is in the rules at this point due to the signed contract.

You've got some stroke, band together with your piers and riders that agree with you and present your case to those that signed the contract to make changes when the current contract expires.

How much is the GoPro contract anyway?

Where does the money from that go?

GoPro didn't pay the racers and the racers are not issued or given GoPro's for their use. So it is an unfair advantage to only allow GoPro sponsored racers to be able to use track footage while preventing other racers from using whatever they have.

You wouldn't like my opinion anyhow, while I do have my solution for the camera problem (back a page) and a few other things I disagree with, I for the most part really like what DC has done. Sorry, but for the record I ain't handling anyone's balls. Wink Laughing

Actually, incorrect. GoPro hands out cameras to anyone participating if they want them. At Supercross, there was actually a guy that sat right at the intro of the tunnel if you needed one (also looking for competitor's cameras)

Wow, "that's why I'm losing interest in the race team". The whole footage thing is very short sided, let whoever want's to be the official camera pay to be. Use their product for the in show footage and charge the other companies a licensing fee to put out their footage. More people pushing your product around the internet and on TV. Too easy?
