Best to treat with rest n 6 to 8 weeks to heal.
Well don't think today would of helped his back.
But you did score more points then Chad reed today.
Hoping 94 is on the gate next week.
Champion.

I wonder what hey think the end game is? I do not see how continuing to race can help the injury. He will likely have to severly limit his training and riding during the week so how does he hope to remain competitive.

Or was this a test to see how his body reacts after one race. If he is a mess all week do they then pull the plug before Glen Helen?

Is insurance used to cover the salary of an injured rider. It's commonly used to insure large bonuses for something like winning a championship, but not sure how it works in a situation like this.

Matthes has been saying for awhile that he doesnt think KR is healthy and ready to go, he also said this recently when OG KDUB was on the show.

What Age Does Spondylolysis Occur?
Spondylolysis tends to occur in two distinct stages of your skeletal development:

Early childhood - when a child is learning to stand or walk.
Early adolescence - high risk active sportspeople with immature bone structure.
The condition is more common in males; 2:1.

From the web, maybe this happened a while ago.

Im a rep for a spine implant company and work closely with Neuro and Ortho spine docs in the OR and am very familiar with the anatomy and pathologies.I'm going out on a long limb here, he does not have a spondylolysis...most likely a Vertebral compression fracture. Spondy's usually are a result in major degeneration and/or congenital "Pars defect", and require fusion. If this was the case he would need a fusion if he ever wanted to ride/race going forward. A Vertebral Compression fracture occurs in the body of the vertebra, and are usually treated without surgery or by a Kyphoplasty or Vertebroplasty. Unfortunately they can be very painful and difficult to heal and the starting point for the cascade that can be spine issues/surgery.

Hopefully this happened recently and isn't something that happened a while ago, like coming up short on that triple or the wallride he pulled off in SX. Im not saying this is def what is going on with him, but in my experience, this seems like the issue to me.

Long time lurker, finally thought I'd post about something I know and understand haha...

Being a young athlete, pushing the limits in work and play. Me thinks a trip over the bars from one or the other....maybe earlier in the week ....maybe in the hills, acting out like hill people do. I do know it wasn't from Aldon.

With this in mind, how does one think he can continue racing and not cause further damage or prolong the healing process? Seems to me hes not getting proper advice on his situation or taking a huge risk.
Even if its something less serious, the back/spine is not something to take lightly, especially in this sport.
I hope Kenny can get healthy sooner than later, we need him in this race, but not until hes 100%.

Ankylosing Spondylitis survivor here. After an initial attempt with my pro license I canned any plans of racing again until I received the correct diagnosis and meds almost 4 years later. Now 30 years later my kidneys are compromised by the antiflamatories, but have recently been put on the Immune modifier Enbrel. Life is good with meds when they work. Thankful for the age I live in and modern meds. I'd have destroyed my liver from drinking or scattered my brain from a bullet without. It's been totally manageable to this point.

Kenny is getting proper care, believe me. It all depends on his pathologies, anatomy, and probably biggest off all, his surgeon. The problem I always see/hear when talking to most people who don't know or understand surgery, is that there is a reason it is called PRACTICING medicine/surgery. There is a lot that we know and have figured out, and there is a ton we don't.

Think of your local Doc's in your given area/territory as a 40 man national gate. You have your Dungy's, Tomac's, etc, and you also have the guy who barely made the gate, ie barely made it through med school. All 40 are Professional motocross racers. They all ride at the same race track. The difference is YOU (as an MX fan) know who's winning races and doing well. If you were starting a team you would know who you want out of the 40 man gate. Surgeon's are no different. You have guys that are in a different class than others, more experience, more continuing education, fellowships, etc. You also have the guy who's been out on his own 2 years and just learned a new technique for a procedure and has done 2 total. The problem is unless your in the OR with them and see them operate, you'll never know what level "your" doc is on. Further than that is following a certain Doc's PT's throughout their recovery and seeing how they do outside of the OR. Long story short is there is surgeons that I wouldn't want operating on my dog, yet they week in and out continue to operate. There is also PA's (physician asst) that I would let remove a tumor from my brain without the surgeon in the room, much less the hospital at the time of surgery.

Then the anatomy issue. Take bone qualilty for example. Some people have bone so hard that you burn through drill bits just getting a pilot hole started. Others you can put a screw in and literally pull right out like it was stryofoam. Maybe Kenny has a small compression fracture that they are being very careful with (as they should). Maybe he does have a Spondy or a Pars defect and needs a fusion. No one but his crew and Doc's know exactly whats going on. I know that many of you reading this right now have conditions like scoliosis and a few pars defects, yet are asymptomatic and have no clue unless you have a CAT or MRI scan done.

Sorry for the long winded response, just trying to give some insight. Look at what Tickle went through, and his recovery. Much, much worse than what Kenny has going and Tickle is out there riding like the wind again. If it was serious no one would have let Kenny get on that bike yesterday. My personal thought is long term he will be fine...

The million dollar question...how did he hurt it? he said in the interview with Georgia it's an old injury and he didn't do it riding. how then, did he injure it? It was also said somewhere he'd been surfing recently, could he have done it then or aggravated and old injury messing around off the bike? Talk about a shitty year that started out with so much promise and the look of dominance....get well soon KR!!

AS is rough. Tough autoimmune condition that you can't run from.

With that said, I'd have to agree that KROC's story doesn't sound at all like a slippage of his vertebrae. Bet he either has a compression fracture or a small chip that is viewed as sable. Either way, we're all speculating, whether you're the weekend warrior, the orthopedic rep, or the ER doctor.

The sad thing in all of this is that Kenny shouldn't be out there gutting it out. The kid is 20ish years old and has his whole career ahead of him. There is a very small chance at all for him to defend his plate. I would be willing to bet that he is out there because he is "the guy" at RCH and the sponsors probably told the team to dope him up and strap him on that bike. If he were a #2 guy like he was last year, he would definitely be recovering and not risking permanent injury.

hartebreak-Well said. It is a shame that stuff like Reed being allowed to race when there was NO WAY he could have finished the series last year and now Roczen having a spine injury goes on. Doesn't speak too highly of our sport that this stuff goes on.

On the other hand I can totally appreciate what a sticky widget this issue is for the Asterik crew or whoever the person is with the ultimate veto power given the pressure from sponsors. Still..........

Football, basketball, and soccer players attempt to play with an injury to see if they will be able to and decide how much they'll be hurting or helping the team all the time.

How is this any different? You have a very negative view of our sport.

In his pre-race interview with Georgia KR said that his injury wasn't new but it had recently "slipped and cracked" - that sounds like spondy (pars defect) to me. As long as it stays grade 1 or 2 and he can deal with the pain from time to time he'll be able to compete, but if it continues to progress to grade 3 he's looking at surgery.

A pars defect and Spondyloisthesis are two different pathologies. And the grade level isn't always an indication for surgery. We constantly fuse grade 1 spondy's depending on the Pt's symptoms and radiological images. There are many people who need fusions without spondyloisthesis. The problem with spondyloisthesis is that the affected levels (typically L4, L5, and S1) are typically mobile during flexion and extension, pretty much "kinking" your nerves and nerve roots...not what you want when getting out of bed, much less racing.

right you are and you can have one without the other but I'm going by what KR said (I can only guess he was parroting what his spine specialist told him) and that was his spine (vertebra) had "cracked" (pars defect) and "slipped" (-listhesis). Lots of folks have one or both conditions and are symptom free but when you start to be symptomatic it can be tricky to manage successfully, particularly with high level/ high stress sport like moto.
