Motovan versus Enclosed Trailer

That YZ was a 96 yz125 . Pulled the motor out when brand new and had Rick Petersen do the 167cc kit to it. It had to be the most fun bike I ever owned. The YZ250s in the pic one is my brothers and he sold it to a friend of mine and then another friend and it keeps finding its way back into my garage , its sitting out there right now.

Yup

My next set-up is gonna be an enclosed-trailer behind a GLK250 (local stuff) and w/ Motorhome for the Faraway races.

I'm old. I'm gonna be comfortable!

tough to get a bit of ass or a blower before your moto if you have to deal with folding up the rear door all the time

I've been planning on sectioning off an enclosed trailer with some very basic "living quarters." I figured it would be the best of both worlds for me. I need somewhere to sleep at the races which made the van ideal at first, but I'm not really in the position to be taking on another vehicle payment after recently taking on a new vehicle. I did a lot of research on homemade toy haulers and found a lot of cool ideas. I'm just taking the concept of the interior design of a motovan and applying it to a trailer.

I don't understand the comments about "sucks as a daily driver"? I drove a E350 for years, the thing was plush and very comfortable. Thing had a V10 and sung a song!

I'm saving up for a Sprinter or the new Ford. Walling in off with a bunk in the passenger area, roof air, generator, air compressor, power washer, small fridge.... Perfect for week day/weekend racing/camping.

such a sick YZ! i remember when those came out, i wanted one so bad! I ended up getting a 97 (ugly ass graphics) and putting red plastic on the rear fender and side plates.

loved that '96 though!

security is much better in a motovan when someone is sleeping in it vs a trailer with just bikes.

Lostboy,

Who built the interior on your van?

I did, with carpet and tile from home depot.I used the good 3M spray glue on the carpet for the walls and Ceiling and it is still going strong after 25 years. Re-doing the inside as it needs a update, getting rid of the blue and going with black up front with new sound system and seats. This is a 87 that I got new and doubt I will ever sell it, its still cool to just cruise in and vans are making a comeback.

I am doing a upgrade on the interior now because its seen better days working on the front part right now.

On a non track day moto van adventure. No need for a tent, hotel room, trailer or anything except my bike, food and cooler full of beer for three days in the hills. Mine is the lifted Chevy, my buddy has the semi long travel ford.

I don't get it either. Vans ride just like trucks, really.

Unless you need a truck for other uses (job, etc.), or you need to carry more than 4 people and 3-4 bikes on a regular basis, a van is the way to go. It allows you to take just the main vehicle to go on one-day trips and tow a travel trailer behind for race weekends or longer trips. If you have room for a truck and trailer, you have room for a van and small car, which will be cheaper to run as a daily driver.

The only time driving my van is a pain is on snow and ice, other than that its just like anything else. Some days I just want to drive the van because it now has a vintage cool factor.

Nice vans (the chevy looks really good!).
What can you fit in those low profile cargo boxes on the roof? I always wondered about that.

I keep a folding picnic table, my gas stove, lawn chairs, shovel and a Tupperware with my cooking utensils seasonings etc in my packasport on the roof. Gets most of the crap that I don't normally have to use out of the way, so the rear of the van just has my moto and bicycle stuff in it. Thanks for the compliment on my van, I love the gray suit.

That's a good idea with the table/chairs. I've got an E-series and my table gets in the way sometimes.

What engine do you have in that Chevy? I know it's silly to ask about fuel consumption when talking big US made vans but my curiosity is getting the best of me....what kind of mpg are you getting? Is the interior all set up for bike transport of did you just pull the rear seats and call it good?

I get 16-18 on the hwy. it was even better before I put the 33in tires on it of course. It's a 2008 with the 6.0 ls motor. Runs awesome lots of power if you need it. It's walled off, folding bench bed up front with room for 3 bikes in the back. Sorry These pictures are crap, I was on the road somewhere. I'm shopping around for a 170" sprinter right now,

I am sure there are threads about this but thought I would post another. I am looking to get either a trailer or a motovan and wanted to know what your guys' opinions on them and which you would rather have. I currently have a 2005 Chevy Silverado but am looking to trade it in to get a nice cargo van. My parents think I should get a trailer but not sure if I want to deal with hauling a trailer around given that a lot of times it is just me going to races alone. Just wanted to get your guys' opinions and thoughts!
This trailer looks great. Specially its design. I think this is really a good quality trailer. I like its color also. What's its size? Check out my trailers...http://xbtrailer.com/

I use the classic box truck, 2000 e 350 with a 14 foot fiberglass box, it's a sleeping area, a garage and work area, a secure storage area and no need to tow anything and u can stand up and stretch out if u wanted to. It does ok on the highway for milage not so much if city driving. Not to mention I feel like a old school factory rider, a slow one anyway lol.

Only way to go IMO, bbuild it right and its quiet like a car and you wont smell or here anything in back, Stay in a hotel and no one will know whats in it, No messing with trailers
I've had both over the years. At the moment I am using my truck without trailer but use it(6x14 enclosed) sometimes as well as the 30' toy hauler. The toy hauler is too big for one day events so it sits and honestly gets used more for family camping than moto trips. This van you have pictured is my dream set up! I want one! I used to have an E350 extended gas but I never built the wall and tricked it out. I've seen guys use passenger vans and just limo tint the window then you already get the insulated walls and central air. I want to try the Chevy next time. Those new Dodges are pretty sick too but kind of spendy..

Comments/attitudes like this are what is ruining this sport. Just leave the door down so that other riders' girls/wives can learn proper track etiquette through personal observation.

If you are in the city or town a van is the way to go. i have always wanted a trailer for my truck but it seams like a pain in the ass to have to find a place to park it. Unless you have a family or 3,4 people you take to the track, a van is the best. Imo
