Reproduction graphics: a cautionary tale

Warning, OCD ahead.. skip on to the next post if you are less detail oriented.

Last year I picked up a set of reproduction graphics for my 89 KX rebuild. I never was real hot on the OEM 1989 KX graphics.. too much blue imho, and I loved the 88 graphics. Nevermind all that. I also found a NOS oem shroud graphic for the 89 125, so I picked that up too just because.

I'm getting to the stage of fitting plastic on the bike and decided to apply graphics & numberplate backgrounds tonight. Plate backgrounds went ok smoothly and fit reasonably well (Factory Effex did mine).

When it came time to apply the shroud graphic something was off. First, the repro graphic seemed small just by eyeballing it. The next thing is that the colors of the graphic were a smidge off hue. The strips of green that are supposed to match Kawi lime green paint, are almost olive. It wasn't until I put the NOS oem graphic side by side that I saw how wrong the colors are. The repro blue is almost indigo -- not the sharp blue on the OEM graphic.

I took a pic to show the size difference (the repro is about 1cm smaller). My camera didn't pick up the color difference as well, but in person the difference is very noticeable.

color difference (phone camera doesn't do this justice)

I'm not sure who else makes OEM style retro graphics for vintage bikes, but I am not impressed with the company I bought from.

If I could find a good way of securing the NOS oem graphic I'd use it instead. Years of sitting on a shelf caused the adhesive to leach into the paper backing (which was stickier on the opposite side than the back of the actual sticker), so it's kinda worthless at this point.

Try using 3M spray adhesive or their black super weatherstrip adhesive. I've been told they actually work better than the adhesive that comes on the graphics.

The brown paper backing is probably visually bleeding through. Ive always had to tweak the shape with a heat gun installing graphics to get them to really line up.

I used Evo mx from UK on my 88 rm build, very good quality on graphics and seat cover, I try to buy US, but we are limited on the evo builds sometimes.

I'll order up some of the black super. Thanks. I don't know why I am obsessing over this one thing, there are a lot of parts on the bike that I simply couldn't find or afford NOS pricing on (given this whole resto is throwing money away).

Graphics are one of the first things we look at, I guess.

the bottom line is this, your the only guy that needs to be impressed with your build. although all us vitards may comment on it you have to make yourself happy, i have used Evo mx with good results, i also use a local company that i can go to their shop and sit there with the designer and get exactly what i want this is custom and it costs 60 dollars and hour, after i did my first 87 YZ set i was happy and i had them make all the bikes out of the same stuff, i sugest u find a local grafix place that will let you do your own stuff, a lot of these people wenrt in love with 80s and 90 mx like we were so they whip something up and think its good, they all have the rite stuff to make what you want they just dont understand how important it is to us weirdos

The girl in Texas is pretty good from what I have seen on line plus she and her husband race vintage. For that kind of project it's best to work with people like her in the know :

Those vintage Yamaha guys out of PA might have that graphic too. I forget the company but they're all over Ebay.
