Saw a pic of tomacs bike had tire warmers on in the pits like motogp/road race bikes. Is this just when it's really cold or the new trend??

I have no inside knowledge but my guess is that they flex more when warm and on a hard and dry track at night maybe it gives them a different contact patch and more traction without lowering tire pressure. But that's just a guess so I could be way off.

I'm aware of what a warm tire does. Just surprised to see it. But kind of makes sense when u think about it. Just never seen or herd of it till today in supercross/moto

I saw them a year or so ago, but hadn't seen them lately. But it wouldn't shock me if they were being used.

The tire warmer is for the purposes of starts, a medium, hard or soft tire will get even more traction while hot, (it's temporary) without running to low of an air pressure, it doesn't stay that warm for the whole race although they do heat up a little bit resulting in a higher air pressure but I'm sure it's not a ton like car or moto gp racing.

Not 100% for starts or they wouldnt be using rear and front warmers. I think its more too keep them at a warmish temperatures while at the truck so the riders arent going down to the line with super cold rubber (see dallas pic from guy b, that race was super cold). There isnt much advantage gained by getting them super hot (not feasible to hold temp like asphalt racing) more eliminating the disadvantage of having super cold rubber.

I hope that made sense.

It's not as much to do with traction as it is to have the tire "carcass" at a normal working temperature.Goal is to have a tire working like it would(suspension and steering wise) typically during a daytime ambient temperature at a practice or test session.Just keeping things feeling the same as usual on the bike when facing an extreme cold condition.

We use tyre warmers all the time for SM ... you cant hit the track on cold tyres , else you end up on your arse pretty quick , i know having the carcass warm is as important as the tread ( or lack of it in our case) .. but it does make a difference... be interesting if they can quantify how much.

When I would do the indoor ax series here it would get cold as hell , kept the bike in the van with a heater and a heat bulb directed on the shock to keep the oil warm, makes a big difference when the track is choppy out of corners.

They can set the air pressure correctly for one. Secondly the traction is better even if not greatly so like on pavement. To be fair, most tracks do indeed have portions that are at near asphalt like hardness.

Interesting, I have a hard time seeing if it benefits really though. My reason being, when you use tire warmers in supermoto/road, you take them off and go right out to the race surface and do a hot lap (keeping them heated up). In the case of supercross, you wheel the bike out and sit in dirt and then continue on dirt. I feel like the tire could stay more pliable than if you didn't use any warmer but I really wonder how quantifiable. hmmmmmm

Feel your tires coming off a road course (burning), then off of an mx moto (not so hot at all).

Like the above posts state, its less about getting them hot and more about keeping them at a decent temperature on cold sx nights..

It was also sprinkling off and on in Phoenix on Saturday. Could be to keep the tires dry

Here's what I really hate. Maybe you're being sarcastic, maybe you're not.

But you have someone from a top team take his time to come in an explain the reasoning behind this to you, and you have to be a dipshit about it.

Also a cold tire at 13 psi will become a 15 or so psi tire when it gets warmed up. If they keep the tires warm, theres less fluctuation in tire pressures

HRC gave this:

Prior to the main event, Team Honda mechanics mounted road race-style tire warmers to the rear Dunlops of the CRF450R race bikes. “At some of these races, we’ll do that to get a heat cycle in the tires before we go out,” explained Team Manager Dan Betley. “Even though the tires cool off by the time we actually start the race, the heat cycle changes the compound slightly and helps with traction.”

Seems like the consensus is that it does help. But you cant really hide it and there is no secret sauce to make it work. And as soon as everbody does it, everybody is back to even. All you have done is add a pain in the ass process before every moto as well as cost, consumming space in the transport and load/unload time. I would be ok with a rule to outlaw tire heating devices and let the teams concentrate on something that makes the actual bikes better.

Fact:
Smoke & Mirrors!!
You'd be better off with Magnets in your underwear..
Modern motox tires are not in the same neighborhood as auto or roadrace tires.
PERIOD!!
Believe what you will, and some do.

Care to buy some SNOW??

I've seen magnets mounted on a bike in the pits. In fact, they're still on there this season.

Two things:

1) Yamaha tried tire warmers around ten years ago. If they were at my disposal I would use them regardless of how effective they were but I have to believe tires are just like women.....I would rather have a warm one than a cold one..

2) Those magnets work for body pain in my experience. My herniated disc discomfort was minimized by a kidney belt with magnets.

PS Having industry veterans like Ozzy and kibby posting makes Vital MX a way better place.

I think he was being sarcastic. Regardless, every time someone like Kibby posts somebody has to quote them and say the same crap.

Living in a cold climate country, I think tyre warmers are an absolute necessity. Not for warming up before the hitting the track but for getting the rubber soft and pliable before you try and change the tyre or repair a puncture. When it's really cold outside putting on a new tyre is a hell of a struggle, a total knuckle bashing, rim scratching and tube pinching task. Heat the tyre up an it flies on in a second without any problems. I currently use a hair dryer which is a right pain and would kill for just one 21" tyre warmer. Does anyone know where to gat an MX tyre warmer. I'm 100% certain that I will never need to curse again if I had a warmer for mx tyres when it's just so cold outside.
