I ride a 2001 RM 250, I track ride this bike and really like it, I've had the suspension done by MCR, it's got lots of goodies and motor work so as far as I am concerned it works well on all accounts for me. I find this to be the best bike I have ridden, I bought it and planned on riding it one season and getting something newer but I liked it so much that I have now had it 4 years. So my question here is to those who say that the 05-08 bike is better, is it that much better? I have an opportunity to get an 06 but not sure that I will be any farther ahead. Or can I make this 01 as good as the newer version?
Better handling, better brakes, better suspension, better engine.
My previous bike before the '06 was a very well sorted 1990. Motor and suspension work. My '06 has very responsive power (and more of it, or so it would seem) where my '90 was electric smooth everywhere (nice flywheel weight and special port job) and my '90's suspension was crazy plush, never bottomed hard and was always in control (Thank you Race Tech). I've had my local suspension guy do a major tune on my '06 suspenders (had to, previous owner had it all f'd up) and it's now very nice, but not like my '90 had. What I'm getting at in all this rambling it that you make what you have your own. Almost anything tuned to personal perfection will be good, no matter the year. Well, to a point.
Might wanna grab that '06 just to have a fresh bike waiting for you when the '01 decides to surrender.

Revalve, v-3 reeds. PC pipe and a 10oz ffw to smooth out the suspension on braking/ acceleration bumps. Lessens wheel-spin also!
Plus it adds aggressiveness into my cornering w/ choosing inside lines.
I think that's good advice right there. If you can afford it, buy the 06. Once the 01 is worn out, start riding the 06. Most of us do not need the latest bikes to have fun on.
