Ultra Heavy Duty Tubes

Edited Date/Time 12/24/2014 1:45am
Currently running the STI extreme duty tubes and was thinking about going to the thicker, 4mm ultras. My question is, those of you who run ultra thick tubes, how low do you run your psi? I currently run 12 psi and am a woods rider. Could I get away with 8 or 9 psi if I run the ultra tubes?

You should just run soft moose solids

I run the ultra heavy duty tubes...I've never had a pinch flat riding/racing in the desert...and I've ran them as low as 10psi. (Unintentionally less than that, and I've been fine-when I've forgotten to check air pressure before leaving the house...but I've never purposely wanted to take that risk before).

I have two sons that run the GNCC series. For the last few seasons we have run Michelin Ultra Heavy Duty tubes. Up till this season we have had no problems. We usually run them at 13Lbs. Mud race in PA this year we dropped to 11.5Lbs. This was his best run of the year in XC2. The flat took a great ride and through it out the window. We did a tube swap and got him back in the race. Because of that we are running mousses this season. We rolled the dice and finally got bitten. Best of luck with your decision.

Ultra Heavy Duty, down to 6psi at times, haven't had a flat in years, less than 10psi for slow bush riding if it's wet.

I think if your racing, traveling a ways to the races, etc, mouses are worth the price.

Depends on how stiff the sidewalls are on whatever tires you're running. I've ran UHD tubes with Motoz I/T tires down to 7-8lbs without issues, but I wouldn't try that on some lightweight carcass moto tires.

+1 on tire casing. Tire ply will do more than the tube thickness against flats.

I run them on my off road bike, but have never tried anything under 11psi.

if you going to get some ultra heavy tubes though the Bridgestone ones are the best.

I agree that the Bridgestones are excellent tubes. I run the xtra heavy duty tubes and depending on conditions I run between 5 and 11 psi. Never ever had a rear flat. Only fronts. I considered myself a faster intermediate woods rider and ride alot of trails with nasty tree roots and some Rocky trails. I live on the northern Oregon coast. I also believe that you would like to ride lower psi for more traction. Therefore I think that a heavier ply tire isn't what you're looking for. More flex=more traction.

I run the ultra tubes and I will swear by them. Those things are so much tougher than anything else I've run in the past. It's a pain to install (usually my hands bleed a bit), but then it's all gravy.

I run moto, pretty quick B class speed on a 450 and I have found 12 psi is pretty much spot on wherever I go!

Bridgestone are excellent when I ran them. I threw them on the scale though: nearly 7 pounds. For off-road they are ok, but holy cow were they terribly noticeable for moto. I've since switched to Tubliss.

I run the thinnest tubes I can find, ride a lot of motocross and very rarely get flats.

12 in the front, 10/11 in the rear on the NorCal dirt that gets hard and square edge after 2pm..

Just 1 RIM lock. Never spun a tube enough to tear the stem off.

i only run Ultra Heavy in mine also, Bridgestone. never had a pinch flat but i'm still wary and won't run under 12 pounds.

unfortunately, last year we had some hippies leaving gifts on the trails... not even an Ultra Heavy will combat a 16 penny. nothing like a $70 tube getting ruined by some dumb asshole. supposedly someone's horse stepped on one too, breaking it's leg and injuring the rider... shitty situation fuckin' hippies

I run my pressure rock solid. I don't buy into the less pressure is more traction theory. Blue groove dirt is the only time I run a lower tire pressure.

Motosmith. Maybe on the track you won't notice lower pressure much but if you trail ride especially in the winter on the Oregon coast its not a theory, its a fact

I run ultra heavy duty tubes because I also race some Enduros and don't want to have to go back and forth. I stay 12 lb or higher. Usually 12 lb turns into 13 -14 at the warm point of the day.

And that's messed up. Don't know much about horses, but can they even recover from a broken leg? Fricken idiots out there.

What psi do you run with them ?
Anywhere from 0psi (yes I said ZERO!) to 12PSI depending on the tire you use.

No more pinch flats
Fix a flat quick with a tire plug
Running lower PSI gives more traction and makes you suspension work better.

I love TUbliss!

I was just about to post that I know a lot of guys running those, and they love them. They are quite a bit more expensive than the ultra heavy duty tubes though.

apples and oranges.

Ultra heavy duty tubes still flat, they are just heavier. Once you use TUbliss (correctly), and experience the adjustability of the pressure you can play with, you wont go back to traditional tubes.

The new Gen 2 Tubliss (if installed and maintained correctly) will last years.
