Motox85, i paid $5200 for my 06 yz250. I paid $6750 for my 15 ktm 250. Both otd prices. I buy out of state no tax n all the bs.

Well, glad you got a good price on a KTM, but a friend of mine is a KTM dealer and I called him before I bought our new YZ250. If you got that bike OTD for$6750 you bought the bike for $450 over cost. So if you take taxes, doc fee and destination fee, your dealer lost about $300 selling you that bike. We can talk bikes all we want but what is most important is a GOOD DEALER and if he made you that deal, make sure to return the favor.

Hydraulic clutches feel extremely vague. I hands down prefer the cable.

Motox85, u can get that price from just about any dealer. Munn was gna ship one to me in nj for 7k thats with shipping. I know people who paid $6600 for them. I have bought all my ktms from the same dealer which is in pa im in nj. Ive never paid doc , des fee, or taxes on any of the bikes ive ever owned.

That's a great deal for sure, but to the average dealer, cost is $63xx for a 15 250 SX. Bigger dealers may get a better price, not sure how that works. And like I said, a good dealer is better than whatever shortcomings a bike has or doesn't have.

Motox85 i agree. My ktm dealer is a great dude! No haggeling with him, he gives u the best priced and knows your not getting better anywhere else

But there is no comparison between cornering, handling, suspension, weight (don't care what the mags tell you). The motors on the 1/4 liters are about the same and the 1/2 liter the KTM has a small advantage of about 2 HP. I can fix a motor faster than I can fix handling and suspension. As for the clutch, I know some people like the hydros and to each his own, but on a 2 smoke (especially a 125) it is almost a must to have a cable to be able to feel the feathering of the power.
Volumetric correction 1/4 liter = 250cc; 1/2 liter = 500cc.

Damn that is cheap, lowest I've seen here is $6599 for a 15 YZ250 and that is not OTD. The other dealer here is still charging full MSRP. I'm surprised the one dealer here is still in business based on their max profit every sale.

If you want an apples to apples comparison of prices, you need to compare the MSRP of the '06 and '15 against the consumer price index.

2006 YZ250 msrp $6200
2015 YZ250 msrp $7300

If you go to the US gov's cpi calculator you will find that $6200 in 2006 is equivalent to $7300 in today's money. That means the price of the new YZ has not gone up at all when adjusted for inflation.

I have both bikes and know the difference, both are good. I definitly prefer the KTM, way better motor (MXA only knows about springs and sprockets, but not about RM needles haha), way way better handling and better components. Brakes on the YZ are a joke, we (3 friends) all ran oversize rotors on our YZs. All had gerarbox failures as well (I'm an aircraft mechanic). Suspension also needed to be done, ran my own fork settings with Öhlins shock. KTM needed fiddling with the shift mechanism and MX-Tech suspension though (it's a 13 with the old WP stuff), but perfect otherwise.
Happy with the KTM now, and given the choice I would definitly chose the KTM again!
I think the only reason the motor feels better on the KTM is because it comes with a vforce and FMF pipe right from the factory. You slap a pipe and vForce on the yz and it makes night and day difference....

Ha, inflation. Since 06 my raises have covered inflation. Then in 2013 my health insurance skyrocketed and covered all those raises I recieved! Back at the bottom of the barrel with inflation still rising.

What do you talk about who said the KTM comes stock with a FMF pipe? V-force yes but pipe & silencer no ? You can buy it through the powerparts do.

You may have a point. Installing the V-Force and FMF Fatty definitely amped my 2013 up. Polishing/matching the transfers and polishing the intake and exhaust really made a noticeable difference.

I don't know why I thought the ktm 250 came with a fmf stock. My fault. Probably because my buddy bought one and it already had the pipe on it, but like someone said previously must of powersports parted up I guess.....

The vforce by itself is enough to drastically realize the difference....

What areas would you say Polishing/matching the transfers and polishing the intake and exhaust help out in?

I did not really notice much of a difference off the bottom, but definitely in the mid and higher. Also, I matched the base gasket to the barrel and cylinder as best I could. I'm not sure why, but Yamaha has manufactured the cylinder with some overhang on the transfer ports where the cylinder meets the crank case. It seems to my pea-brain that having no overhang at that point would help things along.

Even with the stock pipe/exhaust can you get this bike to run straight pump gas? I know a lot of people have problems with it pinging. Is that from high temperatures (90F or higher) and running the motor hard?

Mine pinged with straight pump gas. I switched to 116 octane Base Race Fuel many moons ago. The stuff is awesome and really makes the YZ go. When I get traction on my bike, look out. Many times it has tried to throw me off.

I've run all sorts of fuels, pipes and vforce on the 4 different YZ 250s that Ive had. My favorite has been my completely stock one on pump gas. Not sure why but I really like the power delivery over my other bikes. I still like my yz better than my 15 250sx at the moment.

Yep, now take the $500 you get with blue cru and you get $6200. Local Yamaha dealer hear helps my son. We get great deals, the service department is excellent and no one else is close on price.

We are a Yamaha family but a good dealer is probably more important to me!
