This was at MBK in Bangkok, small shop inside the mall with custom painted helmets and some other tacky stuff.

A helmet like that would be incredibly dangerous. All those ridges and angles would dig into the ground and not allow much deflection to absorb the blow. Much like the ridges we see on the majority of helmets nowadays anyhow...I think they are at least slightly more dangerous than a normal rounded helmet. You want no edge to dig into the ground and cause more of a sudden stop, or a finer point of impact. If an edge is the part of the helmet to make first contact with the ground, it can't spread out the force over as much of the area of the helmet.

And don't argue with me on this! Wink

yea, because a lot of them are former muay thai fighters and will kick the fuck out of you for cracking jokes on them. Saw it happen to two Arabs in an alley way in Chiang Mai a little while back. Took their wallets and everything. Hahahaha. Round house kicked by a dude with tits and high heels.

I love Thailand, never a dull (sober) moment.

It would be interesting to see some data to substantiates that position. Arai makes a sound argument...in theory, I support it. In practice, I suspect there are too many variables affecting head impact on the ground to reduce the incidence of head/brain/cervical injury to only one variable.

If we are worried about things "digging" in to the ground, then logic should follow that those proponents should make an immediate movement towards an MX helmet that removes the chin bar and visor from being a point of leverage/ridge...they are, after all, the largest lever/ridge on every MX helmet. A street style helmet should be inherently safer as it smooths the transition from the crown of the helmet to the chinbar, in an Arai egg like fashion.

The argument is not dissimilar from the neck brace and knee brace arguments. We have a lack of data to support either. I wear both knowing full well that there is no data. At the end of the day we just have to do what makes us feel comfortable...
