I went from 100 schoolboy class right to 250's. A year and a half later my first ride on an open bike was in the OpenB class. Smoked em my first race. It's all on your abilities and throttle control. That bike won't do anything you don't tell it to do.
Ride on my man.

Go for it. Just add a 9oz flywheel weight.

ok since were talking about this what if your kid was 13 and 97 lbs and 5 foot 1 and rode a 125 pretty good. I was just on the fence about this last weekend with a few guys. my kid tried a yz 125 for the first time last weekend. he rides it just like his 85 except struggles a bit in flat corners. on his 85 he can hang with good jr level riders and beat most vet guys no problem with the exception of the faster ones. hes a very good local riders but not fast enough to make lorettas. I think I should wait one more year personally but a few pros he rides with tell me hes ready now. I think he could RIDE it now but not race it. I think one more year on the 85 to keep mastering the bike and maybe next summer get him on a 125. we have 3 local kids who are in the top 15 nationally so lorettas has never even been a thought in our program. theres just not even a chance. so its just for fun

No, it wouldn't be too much. I had a 1982 YZ490 in grade 9.. so that would be 14 or so. That thing was awesome at that age. A few buddies at some HUGE roost on their XR 200's. Smile

My just turned 14 yr old (5'9", 155 lb) son rides a 250 2 stroke, hated the 250F. He started racing at 8 and has progressed from 50, 65, 85 etc.

But I would have never let him ride the 250 without first riding a 125 for at least a full year. Which he still races both.

I would not recommend the 40lb heavier four stroke so if you can only buy one bike then go ahead and get the 250 2 stroke and put a flywheel weight on it and drop a tooth in the rear. If you can afford both bikes then most definitely get a 125 and then later get a 250 2T. Your riding skills will thank me.

And before someone gets on here about the 40lb difference, I have both bikes in my garage, I do not care what the mags and manufacturers want to lie about

Yeah im about the same size as your son (15 and 5"9 155),

The 250 2 stroke when i rode it was sweet but once i tried out a 250F i was in love! haha. Know im looking to get back into the 2 strokes and race a 250 2 stroke all of next year. Recently rode a 450 and was pretty fast on it but holy crap those things are porkers!!! not even worth it when a 250 2 stroke weighs less and is not that much less powerful.

Il say the OP needs to buy a 125 but would be fine with a 250 2 stroke.

In 1969 I was 16 and was racing a 1968 Yamaha 250 two-stroke. (not fast, you understand)
It weighed as much as a modern 250F.

Low power bikes are usually more dangerous cause you have to ring their necks so long and hard to clear stuff even if you are sideways or whatever.

personally that is better though because you learn to ride and corner and get some technique. any idiot can jump shit maybe they shouldn't on bigger bikes. we see guys gets hurt all the time because they buy thse powerful bikes but there skillset sucks and get hurt.

Any kid who was fast on an 80 knows how to ride a small bore 2 stroke.

Had one at 15, but I was a big son of a bitch. I was coming off of a 250f as well.

On a side note I think I moved straight from an 80 to a 450 when I was 13, broke the shit out of my arm.

Why would you want to make the jump from 85 to a 250 2stroke? Go for the 125 or a 250f.

LOL THIS ^

But kid, it really depends on what kind of riding you are doing. In the woods the 250 is doable, albeit still scary at your age. What you lack in riding ability will NOT be compensated by muscle mass, again because of your age. At around 18 is when you will really start bulking up, but you're not there yet. On the track you will kill yourself, guaranteed, unless you're a pro, which I can already tell you're not. Go with what everybody is telling you and get a 125 or a 250f.

I just bought my first 250 two-stroke, brand new off the showroom floor. I am 20 and coming off a heavily modified 250F. Guess what? This thing scares the shit out of me, especially without a grippy seat cover. And don't get me started on wet, slick, mud covered hard pack.

Trust us on this one.

I was just about to yell at you about that until I saw the last line. But seriously, you must have one heavy-ass four stroke bike. My '07 YZ250F is of nearly identical weight to my '14 TC250, both wet weights. I know it for sure. Of course, the newer 4-strokes are heavier, ironically enough. The newest four-stroke YZ's feel like tanks with their so-called "mass-centralization." Bonkers. I like my '07 better. I guess I'm more of a "mass-distribution" guy. Yes, that was a pun.
