I got my first 250 2 stroke when I was 15. Scared as hell the first couple laps.

Why would you want to make the jump from 85 to a 250 2stroke? Go for the 125 or a 250f.

The learning curve will be steep. (i.e. potentially painful) A 125 is a better choice, if it is an option. But yes, with practice and patience, you could ride a modern 250 2 stroke.

Agree with Henry and Bultaco here, that is a major leap, if anything go with the 250 four stroke as it is has a smoother band.

You will be happy with a 125, unless you are 250 pounds and it is struggling to keep that mound of muscle moving Smile

Different era for sure, I jumped from a YZ80 to the CR125 in my day. The 250 was another class above that.

Jumping from an 85 to a 250? Why are you not considering a 125?

Your question doesn't give us enough information to give you an educated answer.

The 250 I bought was ridden a few times by a 15 year old. He stepped back down to a 125 because he found the power difficult to control. There are 15 year olds that can ride the nobs off the tires and there are 15 year olds that have no business riding a 250.

What is your experience and why do you think you need to triple the size of your current bike?

You hit the ground a lot harder on a 250. Depends on how good of a racer you are.

A 15 yr old rider could weigh anywhere from 140 lbs to 220 lbs.

If you weigh less than 170 lbs, buy a YZ125. If you weigh between 175lbs and 185 lbs buy a 150 SX or XC. If you weigh more than 185 then buy a 250 2T or a 250F.

If you needed a 450, you would already have experience on a friends 450 and would already know the answer.

I rode a YZ 250 when I was 15, but it only made 40 HP back then. It felt closer to a modern 250F without the over-rev.

I would highly recommend at least riding a 250 2 stroke at the track before buying one. So you get an idea of the power and weight compared to your 85.

I would say it would depend on riding experience, and your size mainly. I had a yz250 at 15 but I didn't race it but I respected it and had ridden since I was 5 years old

You will be faster and have more fun and be safer on a bike like a 125 or even a 250f.

I was an experienced rider when I move from an 80 to a 125. It felt like moving from a Cessna 172 to an F 15.I have a hard time imagining what it would feel like to move from an 80 into a 250 2 stroke

If you have the money, go for a ktm 150sx. Although I'm sure you're not even close to wringing out a 125, the 150 is easier to ride and plenty of power too. No need for a 250 unless your an expert level rider or an old slow vet rider that's too lazy to shift a 125.

I will add another vote for a 125. It's the best bike for where you are at in your motorcycle addiction. A 125 will make you a much better rider in the long run.

The bike only goes as fast as you let it. At least with a YZ250 it is one of the more tame 250 2 strokes and has a nice broad power band. You could always tone down the bike with a higher flywheel weight/gearing. There is kind of a dilemma with 2 stroke bikes a 125 is pretty slow and a 250 very fast there is no middle ground. Yeah there is a 150, but it behaves more like a hopped up 125. I know you are not looking at a 250f but a 250f is a great bike power is smooth and very easy to go fast compared to 125.

250f is a nice bike but my friend selling a 250 2 stroke and 450 4 stroke for cheap....and thats why i want a 250 2 stroke

Wait, I thought we were supposed to let 250 2-strokes race with 250Fs because they're even now? Laughing *sarcasm

If you would like to continue to develop you skills for racing, get your hands on the 125. Wink

Price wise yes. As for the scooter... yer a dumbshit for asking these no talent squids on vital for advice, so I think we both know the answer to that stupid ass question.

When i was 14, i started riding a 250 2 stroke.....

In the woods or on trails, i was very happy with it. But not so on the Track! I barely revved it higher than 3/4 throttle, and was very slow. As soon as i stepped down to a 150 i started to improve much faster and riding was much more fun.

If you rev a 150 high enough, it makes quite a lot of power especially compared to an 85....
