I wasn't calling Latvia a "backyard track," I was talking about Jeremy Martin crashing in whoops that looked like the ones in his back yard, which happens to be the Millville Whoops at Spring Creek Raceway -- his family's track. He LIVES there. Absolutely no disrespect to Latvia or any European GP tracks...

There is no strategy that can eliminate the freak crash that resulted in a badly broken foot/toes to Martin. If it is true that Dungey was stuck in 2nd gear after the first turn crash in the 3rd moto, no strategy change can remedy that.

How much better would JMart have ridden had he been healthy? I'm guessing quite a bit better, but how much is hard to say.

So Dungey goes 2-11, coming from way back in the pack in the last moto after another crash as a result of the terrible first turn.

Tomac is easily the fastest man on the track for the whole weekend, setting fastest lap times like Geoff makes idiotic statements. I loved that Paul "The American Hater" Malin had little to say as Tomac was making the GP riders look like amateurs in the 3rd moto.

JMart has a broken foot...and STILL goes 11-13. Call me silly but I'm thinking he would have done better without a BROKEN FOOT.

The "tide" has not turned. No one is immune from bad luck forever.

And who hasn't been on Team USA for the past 3 years?

There hasn't been a single mention that Dungey was 'stuck in 2nd gear' in any of the MXdN reports.

Dungey completed 17 laps, passed about fifteen riders and had a top speed and lap times comparable to most of the riders ahead of him. Could he have really done that in just 2nd gear? Seems people like to cling on to these unsubstantiated rumours when Dungey doesn't perform to expectations.

I think things may have been way more simple.
If RV1,JS7 and Baggett where in shape things would have not been tha same in the end......
U.S. is lucky because of the big option to choose between great riders.
And let's not forget riders like Canard,Milsaps,Bam Bam etc etc.
These are all riders who can well do into MXdN!!

Breaking it down to incidents that are obviously out of anyone's control doesn't really serve any purpose in coming up with ideas to better our chances for another win. How about we just focus on the future?

You mention strategy. Other than try and win the damn thing, does anyone really know what USA's strategy is?

Is there a stated process by which we choose the team manager?

How are the riders chosen?

Why do we not have a transparent and stated process by which our top riders are chosen?

Why isn't there any organization or fund raising for the team well in advance of the race so that the fans can get involved?

Why do we not have a MXdN committee of wise men to help make these decisions?

Can you imagine anyone with a goal they want to accomplish and plenty of time to prepare, going after that goal and not have a step by step plan utilizing every resource available?

All I am saying is that I think we have some room to improve our chances if we pull together and put some effort into this thing by getting behind our team with new ideas and some resources.

Why does the announcement of USA's team every year remind me of the selection for the Pope? Everyone waits for the smoke to rise above the Vatican as the selection process occurs in secret. Most years the riders don't even know who it will be until the last minute. Just who is making the decision on which riders are picked? Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

And why not tap into the most charitable selfless country in the world. No country comes close to the giving nature of Americans when you combine what our Government and private foundations give to every imaginable type of cause through out the US and world.

Moto X fans here are no different. Give the fans an opportunity in advance to donate, buy a hat, beanie, T-Shirt or a jacket just like Team USA wears, along with hitting up the corporate bank accounts and you could pull some serious financial assistance for the Team that could be kept in a Team USA MXdN fund.

Come on man. This is MERIKA!

We get sh!t done here....

(EDITED) Jamma10. if that came from me saying "he had problems after crashing in the final moto," I apologize because I didn't qualify what was wrong, and I wasn't there... It doesn't change the change the crash itself, or the other guys' crashes, let alone the well-deserved win for the French team.

The USA have a huge advantage at this race, it hasn't went their way the last couple of years, but they will win more often than not, I wouldn't worry too much, it's nothing to do with strategy. The difference is just the fact these smaller countries are able to put three riders of top quality in a team recently instead of two like usual. Individually European riders have always been as good as the USA but that gets lost in the hype of a USA win when the best European riders ride for different countries, the truth of the parity is only exposed when USA lose to an individual European country.

USA aren't racing Europe and don't have to beat Europe to win. The odds are in their favour each year and their riders are too good to keep losing with that advantage, they will win again and soon.

I will admit I had the USA odds on to win this year as a team (and win motos individually) especially with all the injuries to the other teams. I was shocked they barely made the podium, but that French team always had the speed to do it, Ferrandis was never a weak link, the MX2 class is just underrated. it was a just a case of could they stay off the ground and they pulled it off with room to spare!

Ironically France performed how everyone expected America to perform - no mistakes. While USA performed like France usually do -fast but with crashes.

I think we are seeing a reemergence of the old USA vs europeans from the 60's/70's only being played in reverse. They dominated motocross for decades. Americans couldn't ride period. We figured it out, adapted, and changed the sport. The europeans have now done the same. They have gone back to the old ways of high speed, rough, determination and heart to win. Anyway watching the MXdN can see that.

The American's have so much talent its ridiculous. The talent and skill is not at question. I don't believe the heart is in question either. Its amazing to me to see so many of you vitards absolutely losing your shit over the fact that America hasn't won in three years. I think its amazing and I can't wait to see us match the europeans and beat them on their turf again, but we're certainly not going to do it by showing up with a few weeks of preparation and simply 'maintaining' the outdoor fitness levels, as high as they may be.

A change in strategy maybe would be good. When America began dominating with essentially team honda de facto at the MXdN in the 80's we truly were sending our absolute best over. They were honored and took it as personal as any American representing us at the olympic's. Does anyone here even know what happened at the 1986 MXdN when Johnny O'Mara absolutely annihilated an entire field of 500cc two strokes on his CR125 at mountain track in italy? That was DESIRE and HEART. The will to win above all else. He had a point to prove. How about when Bob hannah was elected to ride the 125 even though he was near the end of his career and hadn't rode one in years? He said I'll be damned if im the fall guy and proceeded to dominate. That led into the 90's and our guys continued to dominate because it was a matter of personal pride and honor to be elected to continue the tradition of winning and beating the worlds best!

Someone in this thread said why would you go risk it when you could instead be prepping for sx, why risk getting hurt. Whoever you are just hang up your boots and taking up crocheting, please! Pansies like you have no place in this sport, much less infecting the minds of anyone reading your worthless comments.

There is no greater honor than being elected to represent our country against the worlds best!!! That is when you truly lay it on the line. Because its not for money, or contracts, or records, or sponsorships. Its simply to put our flag on the top step of the podium, that IS the ultimate motivation, none else is needed! Could you not see that in the Europeans?!?

We should not be ashamed of our performances. I gained so much respect for martin after seeing his crash. A 11/13 might not sound great, but after learning of his broken foot and toes that is exactly they type of heart we need out there. He dominated 250's this year. He was our best 250 man on the best 250F in the world right now. I hope he gets another chance.

Looking at the 450's I can only wonder what would happen if RV and RD were our guys. Tomac is amazing. RD did very well!! Crashes happen, there's always bad luck. These things happen and I honestly believe that with a change of luck and freak incidents America is on the top step of the podium again very soon. The game has simply changed again. Dont lose your sh!t vitards. Sit back and enjoy the next evolution of our sport.

I think everyone (who has constructive input) seems to be agreeing that it stems more from preparation, sending our best riders and placing the event as a higher priority. I hope we can right the ship in the coming years.

It was obviously rough, but did they all think that Kegums was rougher than Lommel?

Not complaining, I totally understand how live TV times come into play... But has anyone mentioned the back-to-back motos for two of the three classes of only about 45 minutes, because that's much faster turnaround time than both GPs and AMA Motocross...If you were in MX2 or MX3, that was a short break!

More transparency in the US MXDN process would be great
Why not sell the t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats etc. is it a legal restriction? That shit would sell out let the fans help support the effort
Get are team over there a few more days earlier
It is a disadvantage being a month after are nationals. You know them guys take a break they have been fucking racing since A1 and they are only human. So are they as sharp as the gp guys who just finished their series two weeks ago? Maybe-maybe not.

Just some ideas
Much respect to all the riders and congrats to France.

It's true the US have the upper hand teamwise, they don't just have great riders but there are lots of them too so never fail to have a "weak" link, they've got virtually the whole AMA to select from,it's just maths, the US is huge, with a massive MX infrastructure, they're always most people's favourites.

They don't need to change anything, things just havn't gone their way recently, next year they could go through the card

Exactly! Probably the single biggest improvement we could make to give our riders a better chance for the win. Directly related to the idea of fund raising for the team. With more money to pull from we could get the team over there earlier, rent a solid practice track in the host country for race setup and practice and allow our riders to get acclimated to the difference in time, food, weather, terrain etc.

Plus, give our riders some well deserved time to relax and represent our country abroad, showing the rest of the world what a quality bunch of guys the Yanks really are.

I walked the track after the races , as we always do , while traffic clears, and what surprised me was the fact that it hadn't got rough like i expected it too at all ,the jump faces around the pit lane end of the track were barely rutted at all , and the turns had some good braking bumps , but werent bumpy on the exits with square edges.. the ruts down the far end were tough , but on the whole , i expected it to be worse, but it isnt really sand , the soil is sandy , but it has a hard base and doesnt hollow out in the straights like you get at Lommel , Lierop etc.

AMA tracks just wont get that rough in one day.. they all start flat , and thats when Martin looked like he fancied it , but by the time his race came round the track wasnt as easy , and it caught him out.

It was Van Horbeek that bent a shifter,,he raced with a broken foot too actually. Some things just didn't go the US's way, pretty much like other teams at other years, that's how things go.The best riders are spread across the world right now, that's why we see different riders winning races,it's unpredictable

Martin's crash was indeed a freak crash,he was riding great,up until then,Cairoli aside, all his laptimes were pretty well up there with the GP guys.He said he learned a lot,I hope he gets another chance next year, the kid's a warrior

Yep..all points we have made in this thread and its coming directly from the riders mouths. There are things that we all can learn and when something isn't working, you need to adapt.

I dont see how you can do anything different to the prep... you cant put 2 days of wear and tear into a one day format, all you can do is build the tracks differently, slow them down , and make them technical , but i dont see DC or any of the tracks buying into that .. but its not something that is a US only problem , our tracks here are becoming jump infested & over manicured .

Malin biased?? Bullshit,On the 2-3 laps they showed him racing Wilson and Frossard and Tonkov in his great 2nd race

JMart has a broken foot...and STILL goes 11-13. Call me silly but I'm thinking he would have done better without a BROKEN FOOT.

The "tide" has not turned. No one is immune from bad luck forever.

And who hasn't been on Team USA for the past 3 years?
Malin biased?? Bullshit,On the 2-3 laps they showed him racing Wilson and Frossard and Tonkov in his great 2nd race "Great riding, great lap,I'm glad we had...

"Great riding, great lap,I'm glad we had that whole lap there Jeff because it illustrates how hard Tomac is working here"
"Leaving nothing on the table"
"Look how much time he's closed up already"
"Tomac goes through to 4th place now-wow"
"The fitness levels of this guy are actually incredible,he's had to work so hard"
"The peformance of the race, probably one of the most prolific performances of the MXdN in recent history from Eli Tomac"

Enough praise?

In amongst the usual bitter, twisted bias and anti-Euro,excuse riddled post you could've at least mentioned "well done France"

And well done France. Zero errors.
Personally I've never thought he's been any diferrent,it just proved you obviously heard what you wanted to hear all this time, him and Emig were a great combination,Paulin and Strijbos aren't bad for an amateurs either, they got into the lead and settled into a great pace

And the difference in track prep. Most said yesterday was the roughest track they'd ever ridden and that Nats should make track prep similar
You can't prep a track like that it has nothing to do with prep. it's the fact that there's what 7 different races that happen on the track plus the free practice? You can't copy that the track is gonna get beat to shit. and the only way to copy that is hold AM races for 3-4 days leading up to the national and than not touch it.

What really needs to happen is they need to build better tracks not us building worse tracks. I mean just look at where some of their tracks are, in 3rd world countries.

Our tracks make for much better TV viewing too.

I don't believe there's any problem but home court advantage and I'll continue to believe that till we have a mxdn in the US and we lose.

And before anyone brings up ken Roczen, ken Roczen is an AMA guy now he came over learned the tracks long before he got a title.
